Clean the print cartridge carrier contacts only if you have cleaned the print
nozzles, and wiped the print nozzles, and print quality is not yet
satisfactory.
To clean the print cartridge carrier contacts:
1. Open either the Printer Properties or Job Properties notebook.
2. Click the Cartridge Tab.
The Cartridge page appears.
3. From the Cartridge page, click the Install Right Cartridge push button to
move the print cartridge carrier to the load position.

your print cartridge. If print quality still does not improve, your printer
may require service.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.3. Clean the print nozzles ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Run the print cartridge nozzle test to clean the print nozzles. A test line
prints so you can see if the cleaning process was successful. Use the nozzle
test:
When you suspect the nozzles are clogged
When characters are not printing completely
To run the nozzle test:
1. Make sure there is paper in the automatic feeder.
2. Open either the Printer Properties or Job Properties notebook.
3. Click the Cartridge Tab.
The Cartridge page appears.
4. From the Cartridge page, click the Clean Print Nozzles push button.
The printer feeds a sheet of paper and prints a nozzle test pattern,
similar to the one shown below.
5. Examine the test pattern.
The example above shows a test pattern of all nozzles functioning
correctly.
6. Compare the diagonal line above the printed bars to the diagonal line
below the printed bars.
Look for a break in the diagonal lines. A broken line indicates clogged
nozzles.
If the bottom line has fewer breaks, or better print quality than the top
line, run the test two more times. If the print quality is satisfactory
after running the test three times, the print nozzles are clean. You do
not need to complete the remaining steps.
If the print quality of both lines is not satisfactory after running the
test three times, go to step 7.
7. Remove and reinstall the print cartridge.
8. Repeat the nozzle test.
9. If the lines are still broken, wipe the print cartridge nozzles. For
instructions, see How to wipe print nozzles.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.4. Dispose of used print cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Do not shake used print cartridges. The remaining ink can leak.
Before discarding the used print cartridge, put it in a leak-proof bag.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.5. Install or change print cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Perform the entire print cartridge replacement procedure without interruption.
To Remove a Print Cartridge:
1. Open the printer front cover.
2. Open either the Printer Properties or Job Properties notebook.
3. Click the Cartridge Tab.
The Cartridge page appears.
4. From the Cartridge page, click Install Left Cartridge or Install Right
Cartridge.
The print cartridge carrier moves to the load position and the Install
Cartridge dialog box appears.
5. Select the type of cartridge you are installing.
6. At the printer, pull the handle of the print cartridge you are replacing
toward you until you hear a click.
The Color print cartridge is located in the left print cartridge
carrier and has a light raspberry top.
The Black or the Photo print cartridge is located in the right print
cartridge carrier and has a dark plum top.
7. Remove the print cartridge by lifting it straight out of the printer.
To Install or Change a Print Cartridge:
1. If you are installing a new print cartridge, remove it from its
packaging. Do not touch or remove the copper area of the print cartridge.
2. Carefully remove the tape covering the printhead of the replacement print
cartridge. Be sure to remove all the tape. Do not touch or remove the
copper contact area!
3. Insert the replacement print cartridge into the correct print cartridge
carrier position:
Install the Color print cartridge into the left print cartridge
carrier.
Install the Black or the Photo print cartridge into the right print
cartridge carrier.
4. Push back firmly on the cartridge until it snaps securely into place. If
the print cartridge moves loosely in the carrier, it is not locked into
place. Repeat this step.
5. If you installed a new print cartridge, click New.
If you installed an old print cartridge, click Reinstall.
6. If you only have one print cartridge installed, repeat steps 1 through 5
to install the other print cartridge.
7. Align the printheads. For instructions, see How to align the print
cartridges.
8. Close the printer front cover.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> If you are interrupted... ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you are interrupted and leave the print cartridge carrier in the load
position for more than three minutes, the carrier returns to the far right
position. The Cartridge page remains displayed on your screen.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.6. Maintain print cartridges ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Follow these print cartridge maintenance tips to ensure the longest life from
your print cartridge and optimum performance from your printer.
Keep a print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install
it. Cartridges exposed for extended periods may dry out or clog.
Remove a print cartridge from the printer only to replace or clean it.
Replace or reinstall the print cartridge immediately, or return it to its
packaging. Do not leave the cartridge exposed for an extended period.
Avoid refilling print cartridges. Refilling empty print cartridges
invalidates your warranty. Incompatible inks can cause damage to the
printhead or to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies with
the printer.
Store the print cartridge in the same environment as the printer.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.7. Monitor ink levels ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
1. Open either the Printer Properties or Job Properties notebook.
2. Click the Cartridge Tab.
The Cartridge page appears.
The ink cartridge images on the Cartridge page show the approximate
amount of ink remaining in each cartridge.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4.8. Wipe the print nozzles ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Wipe the print nozzles only if you have already cleaned the print nozzles and
the print quality is still not satisfactory. To clean the print nozzles, see
How to clean the print nozzles.
Wiping the print nozzles removes dried ink from the nozzles. To wipe the print
nozzles:
1. Remove the print cartridge from the printer.
2. Use a clean cloth, dampened with water only, to gently clean the entire
copper colored area, including the nozzles and contacts. When cleaning
the color print cartridge, wipe the nozzles in one direction so the
colors do not mix. To dissolve dried ink, hold the damp cloth against the
nozzles for about three seconds. Gently blot and wipe dry.
3. Allow the copper-colored area to dry.
4. Reinstall the print cartridge and repeat the nozzle test.
5. If the nozzle test line is still broken, clean the print cartridge
carrier contacts. For instructions, see How to clean the print cartridge
carrier contacts.

Make sure the printer has paper.
Make sure you have paper in the correct feeder.
Make sure the printer parallel cable is completely plugged into the
printer.
Print a printer test page. For instructions, see How to test the printer.
If the test page prints, the printer is functioning properly. Check your
application.
If you are trying to print from a DOS-based application, the problem
could be with your DOS settings. Check your DOS printer port settings,
driver, and your DOS application settings.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.4. Printer prints very slowly ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Try the following if your printer is printing slowly:
If you are printing a text document, make sure you are using a Black
print cartridge and not a Photo cartridge.
If you are printing a text-only document, change the Halftone method from
Air Brush to Matrix. The Air Brush setting improves the appearance of
graphics but slows the print time.
Consider purchasing more memory for your personal computer.
Check the document you are printing. Graphics usually take more time to
print than text.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.5. Printer seems to be printing but no characters appear ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If the printer seems to be printing but no characters appear on the paper, make
sure:
The print cartridges are properly installed in the printer. See How to
install or change print cartridges.
The tape was removed from the print cartridges before they were
installed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2.6. Test page does not print ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Try the following if the test page does not print. Make sure:
The parallel cable is properly connected to the computer and printer. For
help, refer to the printer's setup sheet.
Paper is loaded in the printer correctly. For help, see How to load
paper.
Print cartridges are installed correctly. For help, see How to install or
change print cartridges.
If these suggestions do not solve the problem, your printer may need service.
Refer to your printer registration card or warranty/service information for
the appropriate telephone number for your country.

There is not too much paper in the automatic feeder. Depending on the
thickness of your paper, the automatic feeder can hold up to 100 sheets
of paper.
The left paper guide does not cause the paper to bow in the automatic
feeder.
You are using the correct type of paper. See Paper types.
When loading paper, do not force the paper down into the printer.
The left paper guide is against the side of the paper.
The printer is on a flat, level surface.
If you are printing on hagaki, you may need to clean the printer rollers.
For help, see How to clean the print rollers.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3.4. Paper sticks together ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If paper sticks together when moving through the automatic feeder, try the
following:
Make sure there is not too much paper in the automatic feeder. Depending
on the thickness of your paper, the automatic feeder can hold up to 100
sheets of paper.
Make sure you are using the correct type of paper. See Paper types.
Remove paper from the automatic feeder and flex or fan the paper.
When loading paper, do not force the paper down into the printer.
Humid conditions may cause some paper to stick together.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.3.5. Transparencies or glossy film stick together ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If transparencies or glossy film stick together after they exit the printer:
Use a transparency or glossy film designed for an ink jet printer.
Remove each transparency or glossy/photo paper as it exits from the
printer.

Let the ink dry before handling the paper.
Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See How to clean the print nozzles.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.4.9. Print smears on the page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Print smearing may occur in two ways:
Print is smeared as the printer prints the page.
A page prints without smearing, but is smeared by damp ink on the next
page exiting the printer.
Try the following suggestions to prevent print smearing.
If the print is smeared as the printer prints the page, change to a
higher or lower Print Quality setting.
If the page is smeared by the next page exiting the printer, the ink may
still be damp when a page finishes printing. Remove the pages as they
exit the printer and allow them to dry before stacking.

To print on card stock, load the card stock with the envelope guides turned in,
just as you would load an envelope.
The printer also uses a variety of papers including:
Xerographic paper
Bond paper
Dual-purpose paper
Recycled bond paper
Iron-On transfer paper
Greeting card stock
Inkjet Photo Paper
Hagaki
Because all paper varies in physical characteristics, you can receive mixed
results from different packages of paper even though the packages contain the
same type of paper. If you encounter undesirable results, try the other side
of the paper, a different type, or another package of the same kind of paper.
Do not use the following types of paper with the printer:
Erasable bond paper
Synthetic paper
Thermal paper
Multi-sheet forms and documents
Chemically treated paper (carbonless paper)
Papers printed with a printing process using certain chemicals and paper
with raised, embossed lettering will contaminate the paper feed mechanism
components.
Most papers have a preferred print side indicated on the paper package. Load
the paper so the preferred print side faces you.
The following paper sizes can be used in the automatic feeder and the manual
feeder:
Use paper that meets these specifications in the Automatic Feeder:
Length: 127 to 432 mm 5.0 to 17.0 in.
Width: 76 to 216 mm 3.0 to 8.5 in.
Weight: 60 to 90 g/sqm 16 to 24 lb.
Thickness: 0.071 to 0.18 mm 0.0028 to 0.007 in.
Use paper that meets these specifications in the Manual Feeder:
Length: 127 to 432 mm 5.0 to 17.0 in.
Width: 76 to 228 mm 3.0 to 9.0 in.
Weight: 60 to 120 g/sqm 16 to 32 lb.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2.4. Photo paper types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The printer supports letter and A4-size photo paper. Use photo paper designed
for an ink jet printer such as Lexmark P/N 1372481 (letter size) or 1372208 (A4
size). Do not use photo paper designed for copiers and laser printers, or for
pen plotters.
For best results:
Handle only on the edges.
Store unused photo paper in the original packaging.
Do not store the paper in excessively hot or humid environments.
Use the automatic feeder to print on photo paper. (You can print on
either the glossy or the matte side.)
Feed the photo paper one sheet at a time.
Be careful not to touch the printed surface until the ink is dry.
If you are printing several sheets of photo paper at one time, remove
each sheet of paper as it exits the printer and allow it to dry before
stacking.
Cover the printed area with plain paper when storing.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2.5. Transparency and glossy film types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The printer supports letter and A4-size transparencies and glossy film. Use a
transparency or glossy film designed for an ink jet printer such as Lexmark P/N
1402797 (letter size) or 1402798 (A4 size) for transparencies or Lexmark P/N
1402750 (letter size) or 1372361 (A4 size) for glossy film. Do not use
transparencies or glossy film designed for copiers and laser printers, or for
pen plotters.
When handling transparencies and glossy film:
Do not touch the side being printed on.
Store unused transparencies and film in the original packaging.
Do not store transparencies or film in excessively hot or humid
environments.
Transparencies and glossy film take time to dry. Be careful not to touch the
printed surface until the ink is dry.
If you are printing several transparencies or sheets of glossy film at one
time, remove each transparency or sheet of paper as it exits the printer and
allow it to dry before stacking.
We recommend using the automatic feeder to print transparencies or glossy
film.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2.6. Label types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The printer supports letter and A4-size label sheets. Use the automatic feeder
or manual feeder to print on labels.
For best results, labels used in the printer should meet the following
requirements:
Do not use label sheets with a slick backing material.
Be sure the adhesive does not come in contact with any part of the
printer.
Use full label sheets. Partially used sheets (with areas exposed by
missing labels) can cause labels to peel off during printing and can
damage the printer.
If the automatic feeder will not feed your labels, try the manual feeder.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.5. Statement of Limited Warranty ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Lexmark International, Inc., Lexington, KY
This warranty applies to the United States and Canada. For customers outside
the U.S. and Canada, refer to the printed country-specific warranty information
that came with your printer.
Lexmark 5000 Series and Lexmark 5700 Series
This Statement of Limited Warranty applies to this machine if it was originally
purchased for your use, and not for resale, from Lexmark or a Lexmark
authorized remarketer, referred to in this statement as "Remarketer." This
machine is subject to these terms only if located in the country of the seller
from whom the machine was purchased.
WARRANTY
Lexmark warrants that this machine:
Is manufactured from new parts, or new and serviceable used parts which
perform like new parts,
Is free from defects in material and workmanship,
Conforms to Lexmark's Official Published Specifications, and
Is in good working order.
If this machine does not function as warranted during the warranty period, it
will be repaired or replaced without charge. Contact a Remarketer or Lexmark
for specific guidance on obtaining service.
The warranty period is 12 months and starts on the date of original purchase
as shown on the purchase receipt.
If this machine is a feature or accessory, this statement applies only when
that feature or accessory is used with the machine for which it was designed.
To obtain warranty service, you may be required to present the feature or
accessory with such machine.
If you transfer this machine to another user, warranty service under the terms
of this statement is available to that user for the remainder of the warranty
period. You should transfer proof of original purchase and this statement to
that user.
WARRANTY SERVICE
To obtain warranty service you may be required to present proof of original
purchase. Warranty service will be provided at a Remarketer or a Lexmark
designated location. You may be required to deliver your machine to the
Remarketer or Lexmark, or ship it prepaid and suitably packaged to a Lexmark
designated location.
You are responsible for loss of, or damage to, a machine in transit to the
Remarketer or the designated location.
When warranty service involves the exchange of a machine or part, the item
replaced becomes the property of the Remarketer or Lexmark. The replacement
may be a new or repaired item. The replacement item assumes the remaining
warranty period of the original machine.
Replacement is not available to you if the machine you present for exchange is
defaced, altered, in need of a repair not included in warranty service, or
damaged beyond repair. Also, such machine must be free of any legal obligation
or restrictions that prevent its exchange.
Before you present this machine for warranty service, remove all programs,
data, and removable storage media.
EXTENT OF WARRANTY
We do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of a machine.
Warranty service does not include repair of failures caused by misuse,
accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment,
operation in other than the Specified Operating Environment, improper
maintenance by you, failure caused by service of the machine by those other
than Lexmark, or failure caused by a product, including supplies, for which we
are not responsible.
ALL EXPRESS AND IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED IN DURATION
TO THE WARRANTY PERIOD. NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WILL APPLY AFTER
THIS PERIOD.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Your sole remedy under this Statement of Limited Warranty is set forth in this
section. For any claim concerning performance or nonperformance of Lexmark or
a Remarketer for this machine under this Statement of Limited Warranty, you
may recover actual damages up to the limit set forth in the following
paragraph.
Lexmark's liability for actual damages from any cause whatsoever will be
limited to the greater of 1) $5,000 or 2) the amount you paid for the machine
which caused the damages. This limitation of liability will not apply to
claims by you for bodily injury or damage to real property or tangible
personal property for which Lexmark is legally liable. In no event will
Lexmark be liable to you for any damages caused by your failure to fulfill
your responsibilities under this Statement of Limited Warranty. In no event
will Lexmark be liable for any lost profits, lost savings, incidental damage,
or other economic consequential damages. This is true even if you advise
Lexmark or a Remarketer of the possibility of such damages. Lexmark is not
liable for any claim by you based on a third party claim.
This limitation of remedies also applies to any developer of materials
supplied to Lexmark. Lexmark's and the developer's limitations of remedies are
not cumulative. Such developer is an intended beneficiary of this limitation.
ADDITIONAL RIGHTS
Some states or countries do not allow limitations on how long an implied
warranty lasts, or do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or
consequential damages. If such laws apply, the limitations or exclusions
contained in this statement may not apply to you.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may also have other rights
which vary from state to state.
