Welcome to the Printer Toolkit for OS/2.  This utility helps you set up and use
your printer with your software applications.

Following is the list of toolkit functions.

 o Install/update printer drivers
 o Print sample documents
 o Download soft fonts
 o Install screen fonts
 o Send printer commands
 o Download demos
 o Download macros
 o Install Automatic Emulation Switching (AES) software
 o Install network adapter software
 o Manage resources (format and print directories)
 o Uninstall this printer toolkit

 To use any of the functions, simply select the one you wish to use from the
 menu.

 To exit the toolkit, double-click on the system icon, or select Close from the
 system menu.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Display Text File Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows a list of text files that you can view and/or print.

To view a file, simply select the file, then select View.

To print a file, simply select the file, then select Print.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Printing a File from the Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select the Print button, the printer will print the selected file.
You will be asked which printer to use.

When you select the View button, the selected file will appear in a separate
dialog box.  You may then:

 o Search the file
 o Scroll through the file
 o Print the file

This box lists files that you can view and/or print. Simply select the desired
file, then select View or PRINT.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Viewing Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows you the contents of the file that you selected. From here, you
can scroll through the file, search for a particular item, or print the file.

 o To scroll through the file, use the mouse with the scroll bar or use any of
   the cursor movement keys (arrow keys, Page Up, Page Down, Home, End).

 o To search for a particular item in the file, select Search.

 o To print the file, select PRINT.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Searching the Displayed File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select the Search button, a dialog box will appear.  The dialog box
will ask you for the string that you wish to search for.

When you select Print, the printer will print the displayed file.  You will be
asked which printer to use.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. How to Search the File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To search the displayed file for a particular item:

  1. In the space next to Find, type the item you wish to search for.
  2. Specify the Search Start Location by choosing either Top of File or
     Current Location.
  3. Select Search.

 If the item is found, the file will be scrolled to that location and the item
 will be highlighted.  A message will appear if the item is not found.

In this space, type the string that you wish to search for.

Select this option when you wish to search for an item from the beginning, or
top, of the file.

Select this option when you wish to search for an item from the current
location in the file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Downloading Soft Fonts to Flash ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows you a list of soft fonts that you can download to flash memory
or printer disk.

To download the soft fonts in the list, select the fonts that you wish to
download.  Then select Download.

If you are downloading soft fonts to a PostScript printer, you can also install
the corresponding screen fonts to match these soft fonts. To install the
corresponding screen fonts, select Install Screen Fonts before you select
Download.

During download, pressing Cancel will stop the download process after the
current font is complete.  Pressing Cancel at any other time will close this
dialog.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Formatting your flash or disk ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select Format Resource, this utility will format the flash memory or
disk inside your printer.  ALL OF THE CONTENTS OF THE FLASH MEMORY OR DISK WILL
BE ERASED. Use this operation with caution because once the flash memory or
disk is erased, there is no way to recover its previous contents.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. Performing the Download ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select Download, this utility will download the selected soft fonts or
macros to your printer's flash memory or disk.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Installing Corresponding Screen Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you wish to install screen fonts to match the PostScript fonts that you are
downloading, select Install Screen Fonts any time before you select Download.
After the fonts are downloaded, this utility will take you through the steps to
install the corresponding screen fonts.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Soft Font List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Once the search of the source directory is complete, this box will list the
available soft fonts that you can download to the printer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Installing Screen Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Once the search of the source directory is complete, this box will list the
available screen fonts.  A large directory may take awhile to scan.

To install screen fonts, select the screen fonts you wish to install.  Then
select Install.

Note that the fonts will not be available in the Font Palette until after the
next reboot of the system.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Sample Documents Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box lists the sample documents that you can print to any printer on your
workstation.

To print a file, simply select the file that you wish to print, then select
Print.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Downloading Demos ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box lists all the files that were found in the path that you specified.
Some files may not be demos.

Printer Demos are files that are stored in the printer's flash (or disk where
appropriate).  They can be printed by selecting them from the printer's
Operator Panel.

Printer Demos can be used as blank forms or to store any other document that
needs to be printed quickly and frequently.

This function will let you select a file to download as a Printer Demo. The
file must have been created by printing to a file using the printer driver.

To download the demo file:

  1. Select the file from the list of files.

  2. Select Download

 Note that downloading to RAM is not usually supported by the printer.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Downloading Macros ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box lists all the files that were found in the path that you specified.
Some files may not be macros.  There are also different types of macros.  This
utility will download all types, but the PCL driver will only support overlay
macros.

Before you download a file as a macro, it is a good idea to test the file
first.

To test a file as a macro, first select the file. Then select Test, and
Continue. This utility will check the file to make sure it is usable, then
display a message indicating whether this file can be used as a macro file.  If
the file can be used as a macro file, this utility will explain how to download
it.

After a file is tested as a macro file, it is safe for you to download it.  To
download the macro file:

  1. Select the file from the list of files.

  2. Select Download.

  3. Select Perform fixups to have invalid commands, carriage returns, and form
     feeds removed. Also removed are invalid PJL or PCL commands. It is
     recommended that you use this option to insure proper results from your
     macro.

  4. Select Create demo if you want the macro registered in the printer's demo
     directory.  This function is only available for PostScript.

  5. Select Continue.

 To activate an already downloaded macro:

  1. Select Activate.

  2. Select Continue.  You will be prompted to type the ID of the macro you
     wish to activate.

 Note that if you are downloading to RAM or activating any macro, the Automatic
 Mode Switching setting in the printer driver properties must be turned off for
 proper operation.

To download the macro file:

  1. Select the file from the list of files.

  2. Select Download.

  3. Select Continue.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.2. Testing a File as a Macro ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To test the selected file as a macro file:

  1. Select Test.

  2. Select Continue. The utility will send the selected file to the printer to
     test it as a macro. Then this utility will display a message indicating
     whether the file can be used as a macro file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9.3. Activating a Macro for Use ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To activate a downloaded macro:

  1. Select Activate.

  2. Select Continue. You will be prompted to enter the ID of the macro that
     you wish to activate.  This activation will only activate overlay macros.

 Note that this function is not available with the PostScript driver.  Also,
 the Automatic Mode Switching setting in the PCL driver properties must be
 turned off for this function to operate properly.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Choosing a Download Macro ID ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the space next to Macro Description to assign a description to the macro
that you are downloading.  This description will be used for selecting the
macro from the printer's operator panel.

The description may contain up to 20 alphanumeric characters.

Use the space next to Macro ID to assign an ID number to the macro that you are
downloading.

This utility displays the next available download macro ID for your printer as
the default. You can assign any number from 0 to 32767 as the ID.  Use only
numerics.  Alphabetic or special characters are not allowed. If the macro
already has a valid header with an ID, then this field is disabled.

Use the space next to Target File to assign a filename for a file to be created
for use by the PCL driver.

If you wish to cancel this download macro operation, choose Cancel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Choosing Printer Model ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This list shows all the printers supported by the Printer Toolkit. Simply
highlight the printer that you wish to use with the toolkit function that you
are currently using and press Select. After you select a printer, you will be
prompted to choose a a physical port where the printer is connected.

For more information about how to use this dialog, select one of the items
below.

 o Removing a previously selected printer model


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11.1. Available Printers List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This list shows all the printer models supported by this utility.  To choose a
printer, simply highlight the desired printer model and press Select.

To remove a previously selected printer:

  1. From the  Selected Printers list, select the model you want to remove.

  2. Select Remove.  You will be asked to confirm this action.

This list shows the printers that you have selected while using this dialog
box. It shows the printer model and the port assigned to it.

To select a port for the printer, simply select one of the ports in the
Available Ports list, then select OK.

If your printer is attached to a network printer adapter, a list of those ports
will be displayed. Commonly-used network printer adapters include:

 o The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
   4033), an external adapter
 o The IBM LaserPrinter Integrated Network Option, an adapter that plugs into a
   printer

 Select the port from the list, then select OK.

 To cancel this printer selection and port setup, select Cancel.

 If you are installing AES, Binary Mode will be displayed.  If you will be
 using your printer in binary mode, select ON.  Otherwise, select OFF.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11.4.1. Serial Port Setup ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

You have selected a serial (COM) port for your printer. If you are using the
default serial setup for your printer, you do not need to change anything on
this screen. Simply select OK. However, if you changed any of the serial setup
parameters on your printer, make those same changes on this screen. After you
make all the changes, select OK.

To cancel this printer selection and port setup, select Cancel.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Select Printer Languages ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This screen shows the printer languages that the printer described at the top
can emulate. Many printers can emulate several printer languages, such as:

 o PCL emulation.  Using this printer language, a printer can print jobs based
   on the Hewlett-Packard Printer Command Language (PCL).

 o PostScript language.  Using this printer language, a printer can print jobs
   from application software based on the PostScript Level 2 language.

 If you would also like to install the equivalent Win-OS/2 drivers, check
 Include Win-OS/2 Support.

 Select one or more printer languages that you will be using with this printer,
 then select Continue.

 This utility will then use these selections when setting up the AES program
 (Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching) and installing printer drivers.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Making AES Emulation Assignments ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box allows you to assign printer languages to virtual ports. The AES
utility on this diskette will use these assignments of printer languages to
ports. (AES is the Automatic Emulation/Mode Switching utility on this
diskette.) At the top of this dialog is the printer you are currently setting
up to use with AES.  At the bottom of this dialog is a list of current AES
assignments.  When you first enter this dialog, this list will contain a set of
default assignments.

To assign printer languages to virtual ports to use with AES:

  1. Select a virtual LPT port from the list of available AES queues.
  2. Select the printer language you wish to use with this virtual LPT port
     from the list of available printer languages.
  3. Select Assign to complete the assignment.

 To remove a current AES assignment:

  1. Select the assignment you wish to remove from the list labeled
     Assignments.
  2. Select Remove.

This list box shows the available virtual LPT ports that you may assign to
virtual ports.

This list box shows the available printer languages that you may assign to
virtual ports.

After you select a virtual LPT port and a printer language from the appropriate
lists, use this button to assign the port and printer language to each other.

This list box shows the list of assignments currently made between AES virtual
ports and printer languages.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13.5. Remove Button for AES ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select this button to remove a selected AES assignment from the current list.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Setup Printer Queues/Objects with AES ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows a list of available printer drivers. You may use these drivers
to set up a printer queue/object. The driver that you select will be used with
the AES printer language assignment displayed near the top of this screen.

Select the driver you wish to use with this AES printer language assignment,
then select Continue to setup the printer queue/object.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14.1. AES Driver List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This list shows the available drivers that you can use to set up a printer
queue/object. The driver that you select will be used with AES printer language
assignment displayed near the top of this screen.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Modifying CONFIG.SYS and STARTUP.CMD ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

For AES. to work properly, it is necessary that the two OS/2 startup files be
changed: CONFIG.SYS and STARTUP.CMD. If you wish, this utility can
automatically make these changes for you.

If you want this utility to make the changes automatically for you, select
Modify Now. Then select Continue. This utility will make backup copies of your
original CONFIG.SYS and STARTUP.CMD files before it changes them. The backup
files will be named CONFIG.BAK and STARTUP.BAK.

If you want to make the changes yourself later, select Modify Later. Then
select Continue. The utility will save the proposed changes in separate files
so that you can make the necessary modifications yourself. The files will be
named CONFIG.CHG and STARTUP.CHG.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15.1. Modify Now ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you select this option, the two OS/2 startup files, CONFIG.SYS and
STARTUP.CMD, will be automatically changed so that AES will run properly the
next time you start your workstation. This utility will make backup copies of
your original CONFIG.SYS and STARTUP.CMD files before it changes them. The
original files will be renamed to CONFIG.BAK and STARTUP.BAK.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15.2. Modify Later ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you select this option, the two OS/2 startup files, CONFIG.SYS and
STARTUP.CMD, will not be automatically updated. Proposed changes to these files
will be saved in separate files so that you can make the necessary
modifications yourself. The files will be named CONFIG.CHG and STARTUP.CHG.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Install Additional LPT Ports ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

At the top of this screen you will see a message indicating how many LPT ports
are currently available on your workstation.  This number is usually 3 (for
LPT1, LPT2 and LPT3).  This installation utility allows you to install
additional LPT ports for use with your printer(s).  These additional ports are
typically used with:

 o Network Printer Adapters such as:

    - The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
      4033), an external adapter
    - The IBM LaserPrinter Integrated Network Option, an adapter that plugs
      into a printer

 o AES.

 To add LPT ports, select Additional LPT Ports. Then choose the number of
 additional LPT ports you want. When you finish, select Continue.

To add LPT ports, select the down arrow next to the entry box. Select the
desired value from this list, then select Continue.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Choose Printer Driver Language ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This screen shows the printer languages that the printer described at the top
of this screen can emulate. Many printers can emulate several printer
languages, such as:

 o PCL emulation.  Using this printer language, the printer can print jobs
   based on the Hewlett-Packard Printer Command Language (PCL).

 o PostScript language.  Using this printer language, the printer can print
   jobs from application software based on Adobe PostScript.

 Select the printer language that matches the printer driver that you are
 installing.  Only one printer language can be selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Sending Printer Commands ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows a list of printer commands that you can send to your printer.
These commands are designed to allow you to quickly change how your printer is
set up.

To send a command to your printer, select the command that you wish to send
from the list, then select Send. You will then be asked to select the printer
whose configuration you are changing.

If you wish to send the command to a file instead of sending it directly to the
printer, check File before selecting Send.  When you select Send, you will be
asked to type a filename where the printer command should be sent.

This box shows a list of commands that you can send to your printer.

Select SEND to send the printer command to a printer or a file. You will be
asked to select the printer or file to which you want to send the new
configuration.

To send the new printer command to a file, check File before you select Send.

Type the path and file name of the file where you wish to send the printer
command. Use the following format:

<Drive Letter>:\<Path>\<Filename>

Example:  C:\OS2\DLL\CONFIG.OUT

After you type the path and file name, specify either Create New File or Append
to Existing File. Then select Continue.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18.4.1. Create New File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select Create New File, a new file will be created when the printer
command is sent.  If a file with the same name already exists, this utility
will replace the file with this new file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18.4.2. Append to an Existing File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When you select Append to Existing File, the printer command will be added to
this existing file. If the file does not exist, this utility will create it
when the command is sent.

Type the path and file name of the file where you wish to send the printer
command. Use the following format:

<Drive Letter>:\<Path>\<Filename>

Example:  C:\OS2\DLL\CONFIG.OUT


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Specifying Drive and Path for Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If the default drive/path shown in this dialog does not contain the files being
asked for (or is not the desired destination), please type the new drive and
path.

Use one of the following formats:

<Drive Letter>:\<Path>[\<Path>][...]

(Example:  C:\OS2\DLL)

<\\\Server>\<Path>[\<Path>][...]

(Example:  C:\OS2\DLL)


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Specifying Print Queue/Object Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Please enter the name for the new printer queue or object about to be created.

A valid name contains characters in the ranges, a-z, A-Z and 0-9 and has a
length of up to 8 characters.

Example:  LASER1Q


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Selecting the Print Destination ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This box shows a list of available printers that you can use with this toolkit
function.  Your current system default will be automatically selected.  Select
the printer that you wish to use, then select Continue. To cancel this
function, select Cancel.

If this is a function that operates on printer resources such as RAM, Flash, or
Disk, the resource radiobuttons will become dynamically available depending
upon what the selected printer supports.

If you wish to bypass the OS/2 print spooler and send data directly to the
printer port, select Bypass Print Spooler before pressing Continue.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Driver Already Installed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A current or newer version of the printer driver you wish to install is already
installed on your workstation.  You can do one of two things:

  1. Press Yes to install this printer driver, replacing the current one.
  2. Press No to keep the currently installed printer driver and to cancel this
     operation.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Option Not Supported ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Toolkit function that you selected is not available. This could be due to
one of the following reasons:

  1. The printer that you chose is not supported by this utility. This usually
     means that the printer driver associated with the printer object is not
     known to the Toolkit.
  2. The function that you chose is not supported by this printer. This usually
     means that this specific function is not supported by the selected printer
     or the printer driver.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Automatic Emulation Switching ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Automatic Emulation Switching or AES is a software utility that you can install
so that your printer automatically switches among its different printer
languages.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Internal/External Printer Network Adapters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Internal or External Printer Network Adapters allow your printer to be directly
attached to a Local Area Network. Network printer adapters typically include
such adapters as:

 o The IBM LAN Connection for Printers and Plotters (also known as the IBM
   4033), an external adapter
 o The IBM LaserPrinter Integrated Network Option, an adapter that plugs into a
   printer
