  17. Today, Merrill Callaway announced his forthcoming book, The REXX
  18. Cookbook.  He said his latest REXX book, to be published by
  19. WHITESTONE and available by mid-March, 1995, "...is a unique
  20. tutorial designed to teach anyone, even non-programmers, to
  21. program in REXX by presenting detailed explanations of useful
  22. REXX programs.  Those who have experienced the frustration of
  23. trying to write real world code after finding only fragmentary
  24. examples in reference books will appreciate the programs in my
  25. book. Reference books on programming have too high a degree of
  26. abstraction and generalization to be tutorials, since they
  27. attempt to cover every case for every instruction.  Learners must
  28. decipher templates and syntax diagrams rather than view explicit
  29. code in the context of a complete, concrete program.  My book
  30. makes learning REXX far easier than ever before, because readers
  31. can see actual code used and explained in context.  It is a bonus
  32. that the book's programs are so useful in their own right.  There
  33. was as much software development as there was writing to produce
  34. this book.  For instance one example project is an Inter-Process
  35. Control REXX program that combines VX-REXX by WATCOM, REXX and
  36. DB2/2 by IBM, and AmiPro by Lotus Development.  The program,
  37. complete with its own Graphic User Interface, allows the user to
  38. find any database on the system, look at all its tables and
  39. columns, create a custom SQL statement to view any assortment of
  40. the data, and then put the formatted results into an AmiPro
  41. document at the cursor position, all with no typing involved!
  42. This is just one of the programs in the book, which is 100%
  43. tutorial.  Another unique program uses REXX and PostScript
  44. together to print envelopes quickly without needing to open a
  45. word processor.  It even keeps a database of your personal
  46. addresses handy.  There are some essential system utility
  47. programs to back up your .INI files, some EPM and TSPF editor
  48. macros, and even a program to teach you how to use the parse
  49. instruction. The level of difficulty is graduated so the book is
  50. suitable for beginners and experts alike.  Everyone will find
  51. useful REXX code in The REXX Cookbook.  Combined with any standard
  52. REXX reference, it rounds out a complete course in REXX fluency.
