OS/2 HELPS LONG-TERM HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY
October 14, 1993
C-Pak Corporation, manufacturer of software for the long term health
care industry, develops and delivers its applications on OS/2 2.1.
The C-Pak library of software includes applications for maintaining
medical records, as well as accounting and payroll operations, for
nursing homes.
On average, small nursing homes (100-120 beds) only have one or two
people handling administrative work for patient admissions, medical
records and accounting. The small staff is constantly interrupted by
others, not to mention the telephone; as a result, their software needs
to handle the interruptions without missing a beat.
Two years ago, when C-Pak began providing software to nursing homes, it
installed DOS-based solutions. But soon two problems occurred. For one
thing, the single-tasking DOS system meant that administrators had to
wait for printouts to finish printing before continuing with something
else. Also, the staff couldn't access online patient records from
another application until their current application completed. The
other problem with DOS was its memory limitations, which prevented some
of the applications from running at all.
When OS/2 2.0 came out, application developers at C-Pak decided to give
it a try. Not only did they discover the benefits of developing
software on a truly multitasking system, but they also realized how
happier their customers at the nursing homes would become by running
their same applications on OS/2.
Today, C-Pak has tested and converted all of its applications from DOS
to OS/2 and its customers are thrilled! Now, administrators in the
nursing homes can move from one application to another easily, without
interrupting the current application or waiting for it to stop. The
applications, which track very large amounts of patient information,
operate without memory constraints so they run more smoothly than ever.
As far as the folks at C-Pak are concerned, OS/2 is a winning
proposition. Everybody gets more done in less time, has more
information available to them at their fingertips, and still
gets to run their favorite DOS applications...just better, on OS/2.
