ADOBE PUBLISHES TYPE 1 FONT FORMAT

Entire Specification of PostScript Language Now Published
Mountain View, California (March 5th, 1990) - Adobe Systems Incorporated
announced today that it has published the Adobe Type 1 Font Format, a book
containing the complete specifications for Adobe's Type 1 font format.
The 102 page book describes the syntax of the Adobe Type 1 font format,
including complete information regarding hints, encoding of character
outlines, and the encryption and decryption algorithms.
Adobe registered developers will receive a free copy of the book by mail.
All other interested parties may order a copy by calling Adobe Systems in
Mountain View at 1-800-83-FONTS. Attendees at the Seybold Seminars Ninety
publishing conference in Boston can order a copy at the Adobe booth.
Designed to cover Adobe's costs, the price of the book is $14.95.
"I'm pleased to report we beat our self-imposed deadline for publishing
this documentation, which was the end of March," said John Warnock,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Adobe Systems Incorporated. "We
believe the published Type 1 specification will benefit the electronic
printing and publishing industry by increasing the number of type vendors
supporting Type 1, increasing the number of Type 1 font and solidifying
the position of the Tyype 1 font format as the industry standard."
With Adobe's publication of its Type 1 font format, the entire specification
for the PostScript language is now available making it a truly open
standard. Adobe also publishes the PostScript Language Reference Manual,
specifications for Kanji fonts, and extentions to the PostScript language
for color and the Display PostScript system.
Adobe Type 1 font programs are outline fonts that are encrypted and hinted,
providing high quality at small sizes and low resolutions. Type 1 font
software, the industry standard for electronic printing and publishing,
can be used with all PostScript output devices, the Display PostScript
system, and the Adobe Type Manager program. Type 1 fonts are shipped in
ROM in PostScript printers and typesetters and are also available as retail
packages for a wide range of platforms and operating systems, including
IBM PC, Macintosh, NeXT, UNIX, VMS and IBM 370. The Adobe Type Library
currently consists of more than 600 typefaces; over 1,000 will be available
by year end 1990.
