ADOBE TO PROVIDE ADOBE TYPE MANAGER ACROSS MULTIPLE COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Macintosh font technology to be extended to IBM personal computers
BOSTON,Mass. (March 5, 1990) - Adobe Systems Incorporated announced today
its intention to make Adobe's industry-standard, scalable font technology,
Adobe Type Manager (ATM), available for the IBM personal computing
environment. Separately, IBM announced that it intends to provide Adobe's
font technology across IBM Systems Application Architecture (SAA) compliant
operating systems. This will include the Adoe Type 1 font format and
Adobe's font rendering technology. The announcdements were made this week
at the Seybold Seminar 1990 Spring Conference.
"Moving our font technology to standard environments, including Macintosh,
UNIX, DOS, and OS/2, ensures customers will be able to share documents
among different computer systems and output devices," said Dr.Chuck Geschke,
President and CEO of Adobe Systems. "Users will soon by able to use Adobe
Type Library on virually any computer system."
Adobe Type Manager, a software program that allows Macintosh users to
display and print PostScript outline fonts on both PostScript and
non-PostScript output devices, will be available for users of Presentation
Manager, Microsoft Windows, and other DOS applications by the end of 1990.
In addition, Adobe will upgrade the Adobe Type Library for IBM personal
computers, to enable users to build high-quality, bit-mapped fonts at any
point size and print them on both PostScript and PCL printers, such as the
HP's LaserJet printer family. This upgrade will be available in the Summer
of 1990.
"On the Macintosh, there is a standard operating environment and fonts
are an integral part of that environment. Therefore, a single version of
ATM works transparently with all application,"Geshke added. "In the IBM
personal computing environment, there are two operating environments,
Microsoft Windows of Presentation Manager, as well as a number of
appliations that don't run under Windows or Presentation Manager. Thus,
each operating environment and application needs to be addressed
separately."
Type 1 is a font format developed by Adobe that provides the highest
quality type on any raster output device, such as a printer or display.
Adobe Type Manager, PostScript and Display PostScript all use the same
Type 1 font format to generate type for displays, printers and other output
devices. This is the "rasterizing" of font rendering process. Adobe Systems
began shipping downloadable typefaces in April 1986. The entire Adobe Type
Library of 134 families is available for both Macintosh and IBM personal
computers.
Adobe Systems Incorportated (NASDAQ:ADBE) was founded in 1982 by Dr.John
Warnock and Dr.Charles Geschke, is headquarted in Mountain View, CA. Adobe
is the developer of PostScript, the industry standard page-description
language for the electronic printing and publishing fields, and Display
PostScript, and device-independent graphics imaging model that drives
screen displays. In addition, the company develops and markets a complete
line of application software programs, including the award-winning Adobe
Illustrator 88 and Adobe Type Manager, the Adobe Type Library and Adobe
Photoshop. Revenues for fiscal 1989 were over $121 million.
