  10. ABSTRACT          Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Version 2.0 fulfills IBM's
  11.            stated intent to deliver a high-quality, advanced function 32-bit
  12.            OS/2 operating system.  The ability to run DOS, Windows (1), and
  13.            16-bit Standard Edition (SE) and 32-bit OS/2 applications
  14.            concurrently from a single operating system helps position OS/2
  15.            Version 2.0 as IBM's "integrating platform" for the industry.  In
  16.            addition, a simplified, yet powerful user interface with a graphical
  17.            OS/2 2.0 installation procedure, an object-oriented OS/2 Workplace
  18.            Shell, online contextual help, online reference, and tutorial
  19.            provides enhanced ease-of-use and increased productivity.
  20.                   By fully utilizing current and emerging technologies such as
  21.            networking, multimedia, and object-oriented programming environments,
  22.            as well as supporting Intel 386 (2)SX (and higher) hardware
  23.            platforms, OS/2 Version 2.0 protects customer investments, while
  24.            positioning the customer and enterprise for the future.

  36. OVERVIEW   HIGHLIGHTS

  50.            DESCRIPTION
  51.                   OS/2 2.0 is positioned by IBM as the "integrating platform"
  52.            for the industry.  The capability to run DOS, Windows and OS/2 1.3 SE
  53.            applications concurrently rather than individually (separately) in
  54.            terms of usability, integrity, and equal or better performance, makes
  55.            OS/2 2.0 an excellent choice for 386SX and higher-based personal
  56.            computers.
  57.            PERFORMANCE:  OS/2 2.0 performance is enhanced by improved file
  58.            system drivers, a new flat memory model, the new Workplace Shell and
  59.            improved 32-bit Procedures Language/2 REXX.  These improvements
  60.            provide a more productive user environment while increasing
  61.            throughput.  Performance considerations are addressed in the OS/2 2.0
  62.            Installation and Planning Guide.  However, generally speaking the
  63.            typical user can expect:
  64.            o   Equivalent or better 16-bit application performance than OS/2 1.3
  65.                SE
  66.            o   32-bit application performance superior to 16-bit versions
  67.            o   DOS application performance equivalent to DOS 5.0 for single
  68.                applications
  69.            o   Overall system performance better than OS/2 1.3.
  70.                   OS/2 SE 1.X applications that convert to 32-bit will
  71.            experience performance benefits up to 45%.
  72.            DOS APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY:  OS/2 2.0 provides support to run up
  73.            to 240 concurrent DOS sessions.  These applications may be windowed
  74.            or full screen, graphics or text, and execute in foreground or
  75.            background.  A cut and paste capability is provided to enable easy
  76.            transfer of text or graphics between applications.  Each DOS session
  77.            will have greater than 630KB of memory, plus 32MB of Expanded Memory
  78.            Specification (EMS) 4.0 memory and 16MB of Extended Memory
  79.            Specification (XMS) memory available to the application.  For
  80.            applications written to the DOS Protect Mode Interface (DPMI)
  81.            specification, up to 512MB of virtual memory can be allocated per
  82.            application depending upon available disk space.
  83.                   The operating system is protected from each DOS application
  84.            running in a Virtual DOS Session, and each Virtual DOS Session is
  85.            protected from other applications.  In this way, greater stability is
  86.            achieved for the user; if one application fails, it does not take the
  87.            entire system down.
  88.                   OS/2 2.0 provides the capability to boot a specific version of
  89.            DOS (for example, PC DOS 5.0 or Digital Research DOS 6.0) in a
  90.            Virtual DOS Session for applications that require a specific DOS
  91.            version.  The DOS properties function provides the capability to
  92.            customize the Virtual DOS Session to the needs of the application,
  93.            such as loading device drivers, performance tuning and version
  94.            checking.  The only DOS applications not supported are those
  95.            requiring Virtual Control Program Interface (VCPI) and other non-DPMI
  96.            DOS extenders, and highly timing-dependent applications such as
  97.            realtime applications.
  98.            WINDOWS APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY:  OS/2 2.0 can run Windows 2.0 and
  99.            3.0 applications off the shelf, without any required modifications.
  100.            With OS/2, these applications run with preemptive multitasking
  101.            (instead of cooperative multitasking) enabling a smoother system
  102.            operation.  The operating system is protected from these applications
  103.            and the applications from each other.  Unrecoverable Application
  104.            Errors (UAE) do not require a system reboot in the OS/2 2.0
  105.            environment.
  106.                   OS/2 2.0 provides the capability to start windows applications
  107.            from the OS/2 Workplace end-user interface.  The ability to move
  108.            graphics or text between Windows, Presentation Manager (R) and DOS
  109.            applications is supported through cut and paste.  Dynamic Data
  110.            Exchange (DDE) is supported between Windows applications and between
  111.            Windows and Presentation Manager applications.  Object Linking and
  112.            Embedding (OLE) is supported between Windows applications running in
  113.            the same Virtual DOS Session.  The user also has the option of
  114.            running Windows in a Virtual DOS Session.

  117.            OS/2 SE 16-BIT APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY:  OS/2 SE 1.X applications
  118.            written to documented interfaces run unmodified on OS/2 2.0 with
  119.            equal to, or better, performance.  The performance benefits are
  120.            derived from faster file systems and better memory management.
  121.            MULTIMEDIA APPLICATION ENABLING:  OS/2 2.0 has been designed to fully
  122.            support the needs of multimedia applications that utilize multimedia
  123.            extensions.  Fast threads supply the necessary high speed task
  124.            switching required by multimedia applications.  The Data Stream
  125.            Manager enables the integration of multiple data streams, such as
  126.            audio, video, text and control sequences.  Transparency Color Mapping
  127.            allows the overlaying of images and capability to see through one.
  128.            The Palette Manager provides applications with a high degree of color
  129.            control, and the CD-ROM Virtual Device Driver enables the balanced
  130.            use of the CD-ROM drive among Virtual DOS Session applications, OS/2
  131.            applications and Windows applications.
  132.            32-BIT APPLICATION ENABLING:  OS/2 2.0 allows application developers
  133.            to create applications that exploit the Intel 32-bit architecture.
  134.            These capabilities include:
  135.            o   32-bit instructions and data addressing
  136.            o   Flat memory model capable of supporting programs having address
  137.                spaces as large as 512MB
  138.            o   Necessary interrupt and task switching managers to accommodate
  139.                32-bit save/restore operations
  140.            o   Enhanced 32-bit loader
  141.            o   Appropriate commands and utilities for application developers to
  142.                use 32-bit programs.
  143.            OS/2 2.0 includes support for the Intel 80387 floating point
  144.            coprocessor and provides a high performance emulation mode when the
  145.            80387 is absent.
  146.            PC MANUFACTURERS' INFORMATION:  OS/2 2.0 has been designed to run
  147.            unmodified on PC manufacturers' 386SX and higher hardware platforms.
  148.            Information regarding systems tested will be provided via online data
  149.            bases in the first quarter of 1992.
  150.            NEW OS/2 WORKPLACE SHELL:  The Workplace Shell implements the latest
  151.            level of Common User Access (TM) (CUA (TM)).  It is built on
  152.            Presentation Manager and around the notion of objects, and represents
  153.            a significant step forward in the Graphical User Interface (GUI)
  154.            Desktop.  It is designed around a single container or interface to
  155.            enable the user to manage multiple types of objects:
  156.            o   Programs
  157.            o   Files
  158.            o   Printers and drives (for example, devices).
  159.                   The OS/2 Workplace Shell significantly enhances the usability
  160.            of OS/2 by providing a task-oriented, easily configurable environment
  161.            that eliminates the need for users to learn a complex operating
  162.            system environment.  Each defined printer or attached drive is a
  163.            separate icon.  These icons can be arranged at will on the desktop or
  164.            can be arranged in separate windows.  The user interacts with these
  165.            objects using a well-defined drag and drop protocol that enables easy
  166.            manipulation of the object without the need for knowledge of files
  167.            and directories.
  168.                   The Workplace Shell contains support that enables applications
  169.            to be integrated with it.  Actions on objects associated with the
  170.            shell derives their behavior from the application, not the operating
  171.            system.

  173.            CLIENT/SERVER PLATFORM:  The Workplace Shell enables utilization of
  174.            the LAN environment.  In conjunction with the appropriate network
  175.            software products, OS/2 2.0 supports various network requestors
  176.            simultaneously, such as IBM and Novell.  The interfaces that allow
  177.            developers to write network independent applications will be
  178.            available from IBM.  OS/2 2.0 supports remote IPL, with or without
  179.            local media and, through its installable file system, provides the
  180.            capability to support high performance server file systems.
  181.            ENHANCED SYSTEM INSTALLATION:  The new graphical install function
  182.            provides an easy installation process through the use of colors,
  183.            icons, progress indicator and status information.  A tutorial is
  184.            included for users unfamiliar with the mouse.  A selective
  185.            installation process enables the user to install only needed
  186.            functions, thereby reducing fixed disk requirements.  Two preselected
  187.            install options are available.  One installs preselected options
  188.            appropriate for most users; a second option installs the entire
  189.            system.  Both of these preselected options reduce the number of
  190.            selections required of the user during install.  The new installation
  191.            program is enabled to install OS/2 2.0 from any logical drive,
  192.            including a LAN.  It is further enabled to install remotely if the
  193.            appropriate LAN server and client software are available.
  194.                   Installation options can be preselected via a "response file,"
  195.            which automatically answers any questions, enabling a user-friendly
  196.            system installation.  The installation facility registers with the
  197.            Workplace Shell any DOS, Windows or OS/2 applications found on the
  198.            fixed disk during installation, enabling application start-up by
  199.            double clicking the pointing device on the respective icon.
  200.            SYSTEMS APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE (R) ENVIRONMENT:  OS/2 2.0 is the
  201.            SAA (TM) environment for the workstation.  It replaces OS/2 Extended
  202.            Edition Version 1.X.  OS/2 2.0 fully implements the SAA Common
  203.            Programming Interface (CPI) Presentation Interface, including
  204.            extensions for CUA 91.  Programs written in OS/2 C Set Version 1.0
  205.            can call the SAA Presentation Interface using the SAA-defined
  206.            language bindings.  OS/2 2.0 fully implements the SAA CPI Procedures
  207.            Language Interface, Level 2.  The Workplace Shell enables the
  208.            object-based style of the enhanced SAA CUA architecture (CUA 91).

  212.            PROCEDURES LANGUAGE/2 REXX:  A new, 32-bit Procedures Language/2 REXX
  213.            is included with OS/2 2.0.  It is significantly faster than the
  214.            previous 16-bit version shipped in OS/2 1.3 and includes online
  215.            documentation.  New REXX utilities functions provide better access to
  216.            system services such as the Workplace Shell.
  217.            NEW DEVICE SUPPORT:  Many new hardware devices are supported.  Refer
  218.            to the SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT, MACHINE REQUIREMENTS section
  219.            for a complete list.
  220.            MINI APPLICATIONS (APPLETS):  OS/2 2.0 contains ready-to-use, mini
  221.            applications to fill the following user needs after initial
  222.            installation:
  223.            o   Productivity
  224.                -   Enhanced Editor, Softerm Custom -- Terminal Emulator,
  225.                    Presentation Manager Chart, Calendar, Alarms, Note Pad,
  226.                    Calculator, Data Base, Spread Sheet, and Monthly and Daily
  227.                    Planner.
  228.            o   Entertainment
  229.                -   Presentation Manager Chess, Klondike -- Solitaire, Jigsaw,
  230.                    Cat and Mouse, Scramble, and Reversi.
  231.            INFORMATION PRESENTATION FACILITY:  The Information Presentation
  232.            Facility (IPF) drives the OS/2 tutorial, the online contextual help,
  233.            and other online information.  The IPF has been enhanced, providing
  234.            new functional capabilities and enhanced ease of use.  More than one
  235.            window can be displayed at a time, allowing users to selectively view
  236.            related text and graphics.  Users can bring information from multiple
  237.            data bases into view by simply selecting hypertext links.  With
  238.            enhanced performance, users can quickly search across data bases for
  239.            key words and phrases.  Data is formatted dynamically as users move
  240.            and resize windows.  A master help index allows users to locate and
  241.            retrieve information supporting the system from a single source.
  242.            ENHANCED SUPPORT OFFERINGS:
  243.            OS/2 BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM (BBS):  The IBM OS/2 BBS will be available
  244.            at planned availability of OS/2 2.0.  This service enables the user
  245.            to electronically access OS/2 technical information, exchange
  246.            messages with other OS/2 users, submit program defects to IBM, and
  247.            receive information regarding the availability of fixes.
  248.            Instructions for accessing the IBM OS/2 BBS are included on the
  249.            Service/Support Information Card in the program package.
  250.            POSITIONING OF FEE BASED OFFERINGS:  The following fee based
  251.            offerings are targeted to meet different customer requirements.  OS/2
  252.            Support Line provides support for OS/2 2.X, as a low cost offering
  253.            intended for individual users and small businesses.  SystemXtra is
  254.            targeted for customer technical coordinators and other designated
  255.            focal points, providing support for OS/2 2.0 licensed program
  256.            products (such as OS/2 2.0, Extended Services for OS/2, LAN Server
  257.            2.0).  SystemXtra also provides single-point-of-contact support for
  258.            software and hardware, defect and non-defect problems, with premium
  259.            response within one hour.  In addition, End User Support (EUS), a
  260.            currently available service offering, provides assistance with
  261.            problems and answers to questions about a variety of IBM and non-IBM
  262.            hardware and software products, including both operating systems and
  263.            application programs.  This offering is targeted for the PC end user.
  264.            Refer to Marketing Announcement 389-202, dated December 12, 1989.
  265.            OS/2 SUPPORT LINE:  The OS/2 Support Line offering provides one year
  266.            of toll-free voice support and access to selected mini applications
  267.            (applets).  The OS/2 Support Line enhances IBM's entitled Program
  268.            Services by providing assistance with customer problems including
  269.            installation, setup, usage and "how to" questions.  This offering
  270.            provides assistance for currently supported versions of IBM's OS/2
  271.            Version 2.X Operating System only.  Registered users will be notified
  272.            regarding the availability of mini applications.  This offering
  273.            entitles the registered user to voice support via the toll-free
  274.            1-800-237-5511 telephone number from Monday through Friday, excluding
  275.            holidays, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the customer's time
  276.            zone, in the continental United States.
  277.                   Licensed OS/2 customers considering the OS/2 Support Line
  278.            offering may register for 60 days of the toll-free voice support at
  279.            no charge.  To register for this voice support trial period, mail the
  280.            registration card portion of the Service/Support Information Card
  281.            contained in the OS/2 2.0 program package to the preprinted address
  282.            on the card.  Customers may also register for the trial period by
  283.            calling 1-800-237-5511.  The 60-day trial period begins when the
  284.            customer registers, either upon receipt of the card or the
  285.            registration call at IBM.  All registrants of the 60-day trial period
  286.            will be mailed an OS/2 Support Line Agreement during the trial
  287.            period.  By purchasing OS/2 Support Line prior to the end of the
  288.            60-day trial period, the customer will receive uninterrupted voice
  289.            support and instructions on how to access the mini-applications
  290.            (applets).  To purchase OS/2 Support Line the customer must sign and
  291.            return the agreement to IBM with the annual fee of $129.  Payment may
  292.            be made by credit card, check or money order.  Upon receipt of the
  293.            signed agreement and annual fee, IBM will notify the registrant of
  294.            the effective date of the agreement. Customers that do not wish to
  295.            purchase OS/2 Support Line should not return the agreement to IBM and
  296.            the trial period will be discontinued at the end of the 60-day
  297.            period.  The OS/2 Support Line offering will be available
  298.            concurrently with the general availability of OS/2 2.0.
  299.            SYSTEMXTRA FOR PERSONAL SYSTEMS:  SystemXtra for Personal Systems is
  300.            IBM's premier level of software service for currently supported
  301.            versions of IBM's OS/2 2.0 licensed program products and selected
  302.            other IBM licensed program products running on a Personal System/2
  303.            (R) or other eligible platform in a personal system environment.

  306.                   SystemXtra for Personal Systems provides direct access to
  307.            IBM's support structure via a toll-free telephone number
  308.            (1-800-IBM-XTRA) (426-9872) or electronic facility (for customers
  309.            with IBMLink authorization) for submission of problems or questions
  310.            related to eligible Personal System products, including currently
  311.            supported versions of IBM OS/2.  IBM will provide premium response to
  312.            SystemXtra customers, responding to all submissions within an hour of
  313.            receipt by IBM SystemXtra personnel during normal business hours.
  314.            Emergency support will be provided after hours on a call-out basis,
  315.            within one hour.
  316.                   IBM specialists will answer questions, provide problem
  317.            analysis and resolution assistance, and when applicable, coordinate
  318.            hardware service for machines that are warranted or covered by IBM
  319.            maintenance services.  IBM will take ownership of problems and manage
  320.            them through resolution.  Refer to the SystemXtra for Personal

  349. TECHINFO   TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  350.            SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
  351.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum hardware configuration for OS/2
  352.            Version 2.0 is as follows:
  353.            o   PS/2 (R), IBM Industrial Computer or selected personal computers
  354.                with a 386SX or higher processor, 3MB of system memory and 15 to
  355.                30MB of fixed disk space available for the operating system,
  356.                depending upon installation options selected.  Information on
  357.                non-IBM system configurations that have been tested will be
  358.                available first quarter 1992.  While OS/2 2.0 runs well in 3MB of
  359.                system memory with a 40MB fixed disk in an entry scenario, IBM
  360.                recommends at least 4MB of system memory with a 60MB fixed disk
  361.                for use as a workstation client.  Some application scenarios
  362.                require greater amounts of memory and fixed disk storage.  Refer
  363.                to the IBM Operating System/2 Information and Planning Guide
  364.                (G326-0160) for assistance in estimating total memory
  365.                requirements.
  366.            o   Customers should consult documentation for their specific
  367.                processor to determine available memory options and ordering
  368.                information.
  369.            o   OS/2 2.0 will be shipped via CD-ROM with every PS/2 Ultimedia
  370.                (TM) Model M57 SLC, IBM's new, integrated multimedia system.
  371.            o   The new PS/1 (TM) 386 SX Computer will be shipped preloaded with
  372.                OS/2 2.0 in the Spring of 1992.
