IBM ANNOUNCES NEW RELEASE OF IBM MAIL LAN GATEWAY/2
September 22, 1993
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 15 . . . The need to quickly
disseminate and share information is critical in today's
competitive business climate, and IBM is helping to address that
need with Release 2 of the IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2*.
The new release, which expands the range of supported
platforms to include OfficeVision VM* (OV/VM*) and PROFS* on the
host, can connect supported E-mail products LAN-to-LAN,
LAN-to-host or host-to-host -- allowing businesses to build on
their existing technology investments. IBM also is announcing
additional support for communication with the Worldtalk 400**
product family of gateways. With this enhancement, users now
have the ability to communicate with WordPerfect Office**,
DaVinci eMail**, Microsoft Mail** and CE Software's Quickmail**
electronic mail systems, and can send messages based on the
simplified messaging transfer protocol (SMTP) and X.400 standard.
In addition to the new support of OV/VM and PROFS, the
product continues to support the features and functions found in
Version 1, Release 1. This includes support for Lotus Notes**,
cc:Mail**, Novell NetWare**, OfficeVision/400* (OV/400*), IBM
Mail Exchange electronic mail service, Distributed Office Support
System (DISOSS*), OfficeVision/Multiple Virtual Storage (OV/MVS*)
via DISOSS and OfficePath/SNADS** -- enabling workgroups to
exploit a rich portfolio of desktop, LAN, midrange and host
services as well as business applications.
"In today's fast-paced, information-driven business
environment there is a need to expedite the transfer of critical
information. By adding OV/VM and PROFS users to the growing list
of supported E-mail service offerings, the new release of Mail
LAN Gateway/2 significantly widens the range of LAN mail systems
that can exchange E-mail with host-based systems," said Dick
Sullivan, director of office and publishing marketing, IBM U.S.
"With this new release, users who need crucial information
to satisfy a customer request, for example, will no longer be
hindered by a lack of communication between LAN-based and
host-based E-mail systems."
IBM Mail LAN Gateway Version 1, Release 2 reinforces IBM's
commitment to helping customers transform their businesses
through open, workgroup computing solutions that enhance
productivity.
Because the IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 resides on the LAN, it is
easy to install and manage. The gateway provides reduced
administrative responsibilities associated with maintaining
addressing incompatibilities that exist between LAN office
systems and host office systems.
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1, Release 2 will be
generally available on September 17, 1993. Prices range from
$2,000 primary license charge to $10,000 primary license charge,
based on the number of users authorized to access the gateway.
Services are available to assist with IBM Mail LAN Gateway
project planning, design, configuration and implementation of
enterprise mail connectivity requirements.
Advantis, a networking technology joint venture formed by IBM
and Sears, Roebuck and Co., plans to support the new version of IBM
Mail LAN Gateway/2. Advantis provides a spectrum of offerings to
meet customers networking needs, including electronic mail and
electronic data interchange as either value-added network services
or custom network solutions to more than 10,000 customers
supporting more than one million users.
