Well I havn't seen that much speed improvement, maybe you just see

AGP is not an option on Pentium systems, but for the prices. I'd look into at
least a PII-350. The only problems you would face then would be inflated RAM
prices. :(

SCSI is good for server environments. My BBS here, 106/2 uses a simple 6gb
IDE drive, but my mail server/hub runs SCSI with the latest stuff. I also use
this as a business server. IDE is fine for a BBS, in fact, more than
adequate. With the current size of IDE drives and price I'd recommend anyone
to go that route.
Another way to look at it is that SCSI drives, while more expensive, will
outlast IDE. I still have my original 4GB UW SCSI drives that I bought
several years ago and they still give current IDE drives a run for thier money
in speed. You couldn't pay me any price for one of them. :)
I've owned over 10 SCSI drives in my history of computers and not once has one
went bad on me. I sold two, 2 gb drives several years ago and they also still
run today! I've owned an equal number of IDE drives and two of them went out.
One replaced by warranty.
So the money spent on replacing an IDE drive after its warranty runs out could
add for the cost of a more reliable drive.

I don't know that. I don't have mainframe or mini experience. But I don't
think mainframes and mini's have the same limitations, I think mainframes and
mini's use other schemes of partitioning (om mainframes the partitioning is
not limited to harddisks, mainframes can partition the whole system -
something like virtual machines but then for complete operating systems
capable running very sophisticated programs instead of only real mode programs
which mainframes don't have use for anyway).

FWIW, I've seen a marked improvement when going from the stock IBM1S506
driver to Dani's driver. Running with a Western Digital AC34000,
Shuttle HOT-603 w/AMD 640 (rebadged VIA VP2 chipset), and HPFS386 w/32MB
cache, I got the following from Sysbench:
IBM1S506.ADD DaniS506.ADD

13.78 Disk I/O marks 42.488 Disk I/O marks
99.15 Disk use CPU Load % 1.69 Disk use CPU load %
So, at least in some cases, it does help improve performance. As
always, YMMV.

That's hardly an appropriate statement to make. In fact, they are faster
than the vendor-supplied drivers for most cards.
I also haven't suffered a single crash from testing them.

Greetings All!
At the moment I have Warp Connect running on a machine of mixed breed: it
boots to an IDE drive, and stores a bunch of stuff on a SCSI. What I'd like
to do, is drop the IDE drive completely and go SCSI all the way.
But... OS/2's FDisk won't allow me to partition the SCSI drive. Upon
starting FDisk, it claims that "the partition table on Drive x may be
corrupt." It will then allow me to delete existing partitions, but none
(including the Boot Mgr.) may be created.
The drive in question is a Quantum 540LS, the SCSI host adapter is a Trantor
T130B... Any suggestions?

I don't doubt that it improves performance greatly. What version of OS2 are
you running? What version of HPFS386 were you running? Was lazy writes turned
on?
The problem that I encountered was that the first boot with that driver in
place, without HPFS386 running on that system, corrupted my drive to the point
where I could no longer even boot with floppies. I will retry the experiment
at some point, and see what there is to see a second time around. But am glad
to hear it is working for you.

Can't speak for controller brand have zero experience with them. All adaptec
here. Do you have any drive translations enabled on the drive?
I'm sure someone will come right out and point the problem since someone else

OK. So probably Western Digital drives are not the problem. Mine is a

#8 and give that a try again.
I guess I should also check FIC's web site for BIOS updates as well.

I'm was not sure what FSB speed was until I got the newest version
(1.0.9) today. According to the bootup screen using the /w option, it
appears to be at 41 MHz. I used the /PCLK:0 switch to test this version
out. I also modified a cable by cutting off the excess length so that
it connects with the shortest possible distance between the motherboard
connector and the HDD. So far, so good.
DE> IIRC, the VA503+ mobo has a VIA 586B southbridge, and this is

That's what the manual has.

That could very well be the problem. It would seem to run for a while,
then I would start to get beeps, and then it would freeze. On reboot,
the drive would be corrupted. I tried this and it happened the same way
more than once. I am hoping that between the new version, the shorter
connector cable, and the /PCLK:0 switch that things will be stable.
Being that this is the case, and since I can't change drives right now,
is there any cable that works better than a standard drive connector
cable? When I am able to change, what drives do you consider the most
reliable currently?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Well, you have basically two options:
1) Go through the drive with a sector editor, to find where the partitions
actually begin and end. Then modify the partition table to reflect those
values.
2) Backup all your data, delete all partitions, reboot, then create the
new ones.

Hello All.
got a small problem
trying to "convert" a friend to warp - "holly" mission, not? :)
his old pc uses an old-timer scsi controller & cd-rom
the drive : cds-535 internal 1x scsi cd-rom, supporting cd-r and all the like
the controller : cds-323, 16bit isa long card, with external 37p and internal
50p connectors.
all I have are Dos drivers (chinon doesn't make cd's anymore and their site is
empty about what they made as drives..)
and on the warp connect diskette 1, I have a file called chincds1.flt, with as
text in file header :
This program cannot be run in a DOS session.
CHINCD1 chincds1.DLL CHINCD1 CHINON
if I try to install, I don't get the cd-rom found by warp.
Any idea/workaround/suggestion?
sure that warp connect would be better, on a 486dx33/8mb/250mb than win3.11
and all the problems he brings with him!
smile.. crossposting some places... need so baaaaadly an answer :-)
thanks for help

Hello Daniela,
I'm taking the liberty to bumb in.
I am wondering about this passage in the readme:
++++ Knip.....Begin van het bestand DaniS506.DOC .....++++
Daniela's S506 ADD - Release 1.0.9
----------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a removable drive which you want to boot from, this
reportedly
fails. To enable booting from this unit it has to be treated as a fixed
one. This can be done with the option /!RMV applied to the proper unit.
It is reported also that some Syquest drives have buggy firmware which
doesn't report properly the support of the removable feature set. To
announce these drives to OS/2 a removable drives add the /RMV option to
the appropriate unit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
++++ Knip.....Einde van het bestand DaniS506.DOC .....++++
Afaik, since FP6 the Zips are hardcoded in the OS2DASD.DMD as removable
harddisks. So, why are you saying this?
Sam Detweiler told me it's only possible to boot from a removable if that
removable is the only hard disk in the system.
Do you suggest otherwise, or I'm I reading it wrong?
Anyway, did have a try:
- without the /!RMV swith, OS/2 quits after reading the last basedev
(os2scsi.dmd)
- with the /!RMV switch OS/2 goes a little bit further, initiates the Dani*
and the AIC7870.ADD. But then quits in the same way: "the system can't read
the HD or floppy drive".
Would be glad to have your comments on this.
On the other hand, I never had any problem with your driver. But most
certainly that's because I always mess up with OS/2, as the experts keep
telling me. :-)))))

On my machine (MGA G-200 AGP), according to Sysbench, they are only about 3.5

The SCSI was formatted originally under a different SCSI host adapter or
different OS. Delete all the partitions, shut down, reboot, retry FDISK and
see if now it will allow creation of a partition. If not, shut down, remove
the IDE drive so that the SCSI is drive 0, then again reboot (from floppies
this time) and retry the FDISK. If that again fails, reboot to a dos disk and
use a sector editor to edit the MBR to write zeros into the entire first
physical sector of the drive. Don't forget to the last 2 bytes need to be
wiped as well. Once this is all done, the drive should be partitionable, if
not, use a low level format tool for your SCSI drive/host adapter.
Also, that Trantor T130B is one of the worst SCSI host adapters going. You
would be better off with almost any other brand if you can swing it. The T130B
is a polled device, meaning the system has to keep asking the SCSI host if it
has information, instead of the current interrupt driven SCSI hosts. Usually
the T130B was found on a Pro Audio Spectrum. It was considered barely useable
for a CD, and then only if no other CD drive or SCSI host was available.

| OVERVIEW |
------------
This README describes an OS/2 device driver (CHINCDS1.FLT) for the
Chinon 435 and 535 CD-ROM drives.
The Chinon CD-ROM drive MUST be attached to a SCSI adapter which
is supported under OS/2 with an OS/2 SCSI Adapter Device Driver (.ADD).
Currently, there is no support for the Chinon SCSI adapter which is
typically bundled with the Chinon drive. Chinon is developing an OS/2
adapter device driver for their SCSI card, but it is not available at
this time.
===========
so, by that time was the chinon controller not yet supported
anyone knows if later he becomed so, before they stopped making pc-stuff?

I have no direct personal experience with that controller here, but the point
about translations being enabled is a good one. I have an Adaptec 2842 in
this box, and had originally tried setting it up in a 386 box a while back,
where I'd done that -- enabled the translation in the controller's BIOS -- and
it gave me exactly the same symptom after I'd disabled it. FDISK listed a
partition table that looked seriously weird, too, showing multiple small
primary partitions preceding each of several extended partitions...
What is fdisk showing you for a partition table? That'd clear things up,
probably.
You *may* end up having to wipe that drive out and start from scratch.

You can do something similar with linux now. using a program called VMware,

Are you talking about the VA503+ ? If so you might contact Piotr Oniszczuk
<admin@contec.com.pl> (mentioned in the docs of DANIS506.ADD); he has this
board and ran into some data integrity troubles. After some fiddling with the
BIOS settings affecting L2 cache operation these problems went away.
Another thought. There is no such thing as a VIA MVP3 chipset. Depending on
the choice of the mobo manufacturer there are several flavours of MVP3:
1) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C586A south bridge
2) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C586B south bridge
3) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C596 south bridge
4) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C596A south bridge
5) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C596B south bridge
6) VT82C597 north bridge plus VT82C686A south bridge
All of these south bridges have tiny differences in their embedded EIDE
controller's registers (undocumented of course), which DANIS506 takes into
account. 1) up to 4) can do ATA33 max., 5) and 6) are ATA66 capable.
Some hours ago I had a first encounter with a 686A south bridge (my father got
a brand new AMD Athlon500 equipped on a FIC SD11 board). UltraDMA mode 4
(66MB/s max.) worked like a charm :-)

That won't work. Cfos as the description shows is a comport emulator, and not

IIRC there has been a utility named Pathfinder with Nakamichi and

I didn't want to push you so far this way, I just wanted to explain

Thus, to make things clear: you are the one who knows the best how

Well, as long as I can know, the only well known maker still
shipping graphics card with a driver for OS/2 is Matrox. I don't know
about the IBM Aptiva series. Don't take chances about the graphics
card. Don't take for granted any second hand information about a
driver for OS/2. The only question : is a driver for OS/2 from the
manufacturer being included in the box ? Don't agree about a
standard driver from the graphics chip set maker (I KNOW that's not
enough!!) nor about a driver that could be available maybe some day
by internet. If you can't find a new machine like that, then spend
the less with a low end graphics card (not integrated on the main
board), then look for a separate new Matrox or maybe for a used card
with the right driver.
About installing Warp on a new big HD, as long as you have an
other machine alongside, you can overcome the process to update the
installation diskettes with the new drivers for large HDs. Maybe it
would be tedious enough to stop at a 8GB size, not jumping in unclear
lands towards 20 GB. (Still waiting a detailed report of a real user
of a 12 to 20 GB HD).
LA>>>> *Look now for a scanner. ....<snip>...

KL> I do, in the middle of it as a matter of fact.
I checked it somewhat in this echo. The HP 4C scanners (SCSI) are not
bundled with OS/2 driver. The clearest advice said to buy one without
the SCSI card, but with an Adaptec card, then buy the ImpOS/2 driver.
(Used HP 4C on www.onsale.com, less than $150, were $1000 2 years ago).
Other way : Indelible Blue, sells Microtek scanners bundled with
ImpOS/2.
Then, other drivers seem to be available from CFM (at BMT Micro), or
from the SANE project (ported from Linux), but I can't say which
scanners they support.
I'm not an expert about scanners, and I wouldn't buy one from the US
market (I'm living in Europe). But I think it's the right time to buy
a SCSI scanner, still available, for a bargain, just now, because the
next models are only for parallel or USB ports (or will be expensive).

Hi!
Most of us are still dubious about CD writers under OS/2, but the DVD
family is (more or less?) on the way. Just a short, simplified tour,
from a magazine I have at hand.
Now, many new PCs are sold with DVD readers. A DVD reader can read
DVD-ROMs with 4.38 GB/side. Only a few DVD-ROMs titles are available,
mainly in the game and encyclopedia arenas, just to prevent spreading
on several CD-ROMs. (Already seen on DVD-ROM: CICA Windows, from
Walnut Creek).
The DVD readers can read the common CD-ROM formats. Most are bundled
only with Win95/98 drivers, (maybe NT ones, I don't remember), and at
least one also supporting OS/2 (maybe also Win3.11 and DOS, not sure).
A DVD reader needs to be backed by a strong PC, at least in IDE/ATAPI
versions (SCSI versions are uncommon) or in order to make the most of
available titles. In order to look at DVD video movies, a DVD kit
including a hardware MPEG-2 decoder is strongly suggested. The
software MPEG-2 decoders need very-very fast processors.
Maybe on the way: the DVD writers. Well, a bunch of different formats:
* DVD-R, only from Pionneer, 3.68 GB/side (soon 4.38GB),
readable by almost any CD-ROM reader, available, $20.000 !
* DVD-RAM, from Hitachi and al., about $700, writes 2.4 GB/side,
but these rewritable DVDs cannot be read on any other unit.
* DVD-RW, not approved yet, rewritable, 4.38 GB/side, readable by
most DVD readers
* DVD+RW, check at the "+" :), pushed by Philips, Sony and al., as
the DVD-RW approval by the DVD Forum is late.
Remember that the DVD-ROM format is 4.38 GB/side. The DVD-Videos will
be double coated (8.76 GB/side), and every format seems to have the
double side option (but readers-writers are only seeing one side at a
time).
There are already a whole bunch of video variants (not counting
zoning the world in 6 commercial parts) and we can foresee the same
mess in the upcoming audio variant.
All this mess results from the Hollywood plot to kill free use of the
DVD media. Divide to rule...
Off topic, but remember... Years ago, Panasonic won the VCR battle
'cause movies were available only for VHS. Then, Sony bought CBS
entertainment in order not to lose an other battle. But last year,
the Dutch Philips sold its entertainment activities (Polygram
records) and is now advertising for home CD-Audio duplicators...
It seems that the audio side of the entertainment industries is
already doomed and that new ways to spread music records are going to
replace the money-grabbing companies.
(If anyone wants to reply only about Hollywood-entertainment-music
records, please do so in a new "Entertainment" thread).

Hi, Jonathan!
On 1999-04-24, you wrote to Preston Smith, about "ATA" and "IDE".

JDBP> the proper term (...)
JDBP> Many people mistakenly call such drives "IDE". But this was a

<snip>
JDBP> The designation "ATA", however, is better, (...)

JDBP> IBM PC/AT, and the controller chip register interface and
JDBP> command set of the IBM PC/AT. The drive "attaches" in the way
JDBP> that drives attach in the PC/AT.
I have a simpler explanation. The printed circuit board makers use to
silkscreen print on their boards the designation of the components
and the use of the connectors. Then, the connector for the floppy
disk drive is simply designated by "FLOPPY", and when HD drives with
IDE became largely used, they simply began to print "IDE", just to
say "plug in here the cable to the IDE drive" (not older ST-506
drives!). In the same logic, the connector for the keyboard should
be labelled "KEYBOARD" or "KBD", just to say what, not how. The idea
about plug labels is "what to plug here", not "what's on the board to
deal with the external device".
Of course, the IDE drives could have been named "ATAPI drives"...
but the AT bus had been there for several years and the new thing was
"drive with IDE".
JDBP> "Enhanced IDE" is simply yet another marketing term. Indeed,
JDBP> when "EIDE" was a new idea, there were several different,
JDBP> competing, terms for the same thing invented by the various
JDBP> vendors' marketing departments (even though, ironically, the
JDBP> manufacturers, in the discussions on various standards bodies
JDBP> and in technical literature, were using the correct term
JDBP> "ATA"). "EIDE" is simply the one that was advertised the most.
Should the "EIDE" have been named "VLBA" or "EISAA" or "PCIA"?
'cause, according to an other message elsewhere, EIDE appeared with
the 32 bit buses. I don't remember this.
JDBP> Ironically, perhaps, what happened in the 1980s to hard disc

JDBP> The new LS-120 floppy disc unit, that holds 120MeB, works like

So, where is the LS-120 going in the near future designs without ISA?

If the board makers add a connector just for an LS-120 drive,
(because the standard ATAPI ones could be relabelled as "UDMA"),
they will label it "LS-120".
JDBP> So much for consistency in Marketingspeak! (-:
The same happens in many fields and also in the common language.
I agree with you that a careful choice should be made about every new
idea, at the very beginning, just before the idea spreads widely.
The marketing schmucks often make worse, not only spreading
inaccurate designations, but even quite confusing ones (remember "SX"
by Intel, "PS/2" and "OS/2" by IBM). Now, the top prize could be won
by the modem makers: the names of their models are so confusing that
they manage to mistake the retailers.

* Up to now, not seen any CD writer sold with OS/2 support.
* Not the only big problem : many CD writers are only for IDE/ATAPI,
so they are highly relying on very fast processors to get a
continuous stream of data to write on the CD. Also, a large cache
memory on the CD writer integrated controler helps about this (now up

UPS is for nothing in this. The same happens without a UPS. All of
this discussed here around January.
Look for a BIOS setting about what the system is asked to do when the
power comes again. On a few mobos, it can be a jumper. But many ATX

In fact, I have many reports from people using my driver on this particular
board, and none of these has problems. But you are right, the Cyrix may be the
reason of your troubles if it doesn't run with a FSB speed of 66MHz (and most
likely it doesn't). Reread the section on the PCLK option and the use of /!BM
and /MR:. And take my 'words of wisdom' *serious*, these contain the
conclusion drawn from many peoples experiences.
IIRC, the VA503+ mobo has a VIA 586B southbridge, and this is *exactly* what I
have in my machine here.
Another thought: many WDC drives have very little noise margins in their bus
drivers, so they are *very* susceptable to negative effects of bad or too long
cables (this includes power), noisy power supplies, ringing (no dangling
cables!) or the like. This is why I recommend to stay away from WDC.
bye, Dani

Subj: 1868 & IDE port
Hi Dani,
Thanks for the reply & ideas. Actually I'm not so much interested in
sound as I am in getting the PnP IDE port to work, because the OS/2
sound drivers work fine. I figured that since the sound & IDE enabler
are separate drivers in DOS they can be separate in OS/2 also. Thus,
I'm more interested in the specs for the IDE port (specifically the PnP
specs) than in the sound specs. Any ideas on that? I realize that
there are places to obtain generic PnP specs, but I'm assuming that the
1868 requires something special for the IDE to be enabled. However, I
haven't checked out anything on the PnP specs either, and I'm not
familiar with the internals of them, so maybe I'm wrong, perhaps generic
PnP specs would provide me with enough info to get it working. That
would probably be a good place to start.
As a side note, I've found that W95 enables the IDE port just fine. So
does DOS... as long as I'm starting from a cold boot. If I boot W95,
shutdown, three finger salute & boot DOS, the IDE won't work.
Apparently there's a bug in the DOS enabler.

SDD is a third-party display driver package, made by SciTech Software. The
one package works for all supported chipsets, which right now includes the
vast majority of new ones, and a slew of older ones.
It's based on a set of core drivers, which are exactly the same across
platforms.
The long-range utility of this driver package is that since they're updating
their core drivers for all platforms (including Windows), OS/2 will never
be without drivers for new graphics adapters.
IBM has already sign a license agreement with SciTech to put their drivers
(a basic version, without all the gizmos that buying them would get you) up
for download by OS/2 users, when they are out of beta, and pass IBM's
quality tests.

Dani, I was about to join the chorus and blame your drivers for
fouling me up when I (blush) discovered that I had neglected to correct
the SOMIR path after the last install of Visual Age C++. Didn't seem
to matter until I put FP12 on but it sure did then!
As for the noise problem, I still use full size towers which means
relatively long parallel cables. I had all sorts of grief with about
everything IDE until I picked up a handful of ferrite bars that IBM
used on some of their early SCSI cables. Clamped those on the cables
and the erratic noise problems went away. Looking at the signals it
appears that the termination of the IDC-type ribbon cables is not quite
what the standard 130 ohm terminations match (it's actually closer to
120 ohms into a CMOS gate, anyway). Using the ferrite surpressors cut
the overshoot and reflection on the lines to essentially nothing. Just
one more trick for your bag if you ever just have to live with narrow
noise margins.
Your drivers are working great with the older VIA bridges as well as
the 503 - and I have yet to see the dead-lock conditions I can induce
with IBM1S506.ADD. One question: you stated (in one of the readme's)
that you have departed from the DDK model. May one ask in what way and
why?

No need to. I searched the message base, and found the thread.
Anyway, to keep this brief, when I tried DANIS506.ADD the first time, it
was unstable. Using the new version (1.0.9), and using the /PCLK:0
switch, it is performing wonderfully. Without the switch, the driver
was assuming that the motherboard was using a 33 MHz speed. When I used
the switch, I found out that it is actually set for 41 MHZ, which
definitely made for an unstable setup.
Adding the switch allowed the driver to select the proper speed at
which to operate. If you try the driver again, try using this switch
and see if it makes the difference for you as well.

SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 Beta 8
SciTech Display Doctor for OS/2 Beta 8 has been released. SciTech Display
Doctor for OS/2 brings SciTech's
proven DOS and Windows device support technologies to the OS/2 Operating
System. Although one of the core
features of our DOS and Windows products is the support for the VESA
VBE/Core standard, the OS/2 version has
nothing at all to do with VESA services. Rather SciTech Display Doctor
for OS/2 incorporates the new SciTech
Nucleus, Graphics Architecture device driver technology to bring
SciTech's device support to the OS/2 platform.
SciTech Nucleus is a binary portable, OS neutral, device driver
architecture. As binary portable drivers, SciTech
can fully develop and test the core device drivers in the DOS and Windows
environments, while being able to
target any Intel x86 based OS as the runtime environment (such as OS/2).
This essentially allows the OS/2 product
to utilise the same SciTech binary device drivers as the DOS and Windows
versions of the product, improving the
quality and performance of the drivers for all supported operating
systems.
You can download a copy of the beta from ftp.scitechsoft.com.

Done. Dropped the HPFS386 cache to 256KB, and here are the results:
IBM1S506.ADD DaniS506.ADD
------------ ------------
1951.359 File I/O marks 2529.451 File I/O marks

Disk performance has still improved, albeit less so than with a larger

Hi Stephen!
Thus quoth Stephen Haffly to Daniela Engert:
SH> I'm was not sure what FSB speed was until I got the newest version
SH> (1.0.9) today. According to the bootup screen using the /w option,
SH> it appears to be at 41 MHz.
This is not unlikely with a Cyrix. Some models have a 75MHz or 83Mhz FSB speed
which translates on some boards into 37.5MHz or 41.5MHz PCI bus clock. If this
is the case, setting the regular 33MHz based timing values into the EIDE
controller registers leads to heavy overclocking of the EIDE channel. Most
disks (with the regular exception of IBM drives) just barf or exhibit data
distortions.
SH> I used the /PCLK:0 switch to test this version out. I also

Godd idea!
DE>> Another thought: many WDC drives have very little noise margins in
SH> That could very well be the problem. It would seem to run for a
SH> while, then I would start to get beeps, and then it would freeze.
Ah! Beeps do indicate communication errors on the EIDE channel. Some time ago
I built this feature into the driver for debugging purposes but as it turned
out to be a good indicator of data at risk!
SH> On reboot, the drive would be corrupted.
Of course. Most likely, vital data structures just didn't get written to disk.
SH> I tried this and it happened the same way more than once. I am
SH> hoping that between the new version, the shorter connector cable,
SH> and the /PCLK:0 switch that things will be stable.
SH> Being that this is the case, and since I can't change drives right
SH> now, is there any cable that works better than a standard drive
SH> connector cable? When I am able to change, what drives do you
SH> consider the most reliable currently?
There *is* a better cable available, and I recommend it to everyone running
disks at high speed: the so called 80-wire cable (a prerequisite for ATA66
operation). Basically it is a regular cable with 40pin connectors, but in
between each of the regular wires is an additional ground wire which improves
signal quality considerably.
My hardware recommendation: taking into account the 1000+ reports I got in the
past few months I can see a clear pattern:
Apart from programming errors (my fault) there were *no* trouble reports from
people using
- either Intel chipsets (one exception: a particular line of PIIX3's)
- or IBM disk drives
Either one seems to prevent data errors. I've got several IBM drives and never
experienced any data corruption. They tolerate a considerable amount of noise
and heavy overclocking.
bye, Dani

Had this card too....it didn't work under OS/2, no way at all. I bought an

Subj: DANIS506 driver question
Hi Daniela,
I'd like to follow up on my earlier message.
With the new 1.0.9 driver, and using the PCLK:0 parameter, things are
very stable.
There is one problem remaining though. The tape backup (Conner 4 Gb) is
not detected during bootup. It is detected by the BIOS, but not by the
DANIS506.ADD driver. The same drive is detected by the IBM1S506 driver.
The drive is an IDE connected 4 Gb compressed/2Gb uncompressed tape
drive that uses QIC-3080 Wide tapes.
Thank you for your help,
TTYL,
Stephen

I will look for the newer version. I wish I had a Xircom card - at least
they have OS/2 drivers. This thing is an Australian version of something
unknown and the"manufacturer" doesn't believe OS/2 exists (immovable
object).
I may have to sell this to some "lesser being" (eg Win user <g>) and just
go out and get a supported device.

OK thannks. Will look shortly (I do all this BBS and email stuff on my
desktop).

Subj: DANIS506 driver question
Hi Stephen!
Thus quoth Stephen Haffly to Daniela Engert:
SH> What does the following output from diskinfo mean (especially the
SH> part about misalignmed)?
Current EIDE busmasters (implemented according to the SFF-8038i spec) have
limitations in their hardware. They cannot transfer data blocks of odd byte
lengths, and the memory location must not be an odd byte address. If any of
these two prerequisites is missed, the transfer can't be done by the busmaster
hardware but has to be carried out by the CPU using PIO mode; this is called a
'misaligned' transfer. During regular operation this is a non-issue as the
OS/2 kernel and the file systems guarantee properly aligned data transfers.
But during boot or accessing the OS2*.INI files this guarantee no longer
holds.
SH> Also, here is a copy of the dumpide output:
Looks fine. The UltraDMA cycle timing is slowed down by one PCI clock to
account for the 41MHz PCI bus, just as it should be.
SH> Things do appear to be working fine with the new version. I think

Fine. You should experience a 'smoother' feeling of your system.

Hi Kris!
Thus quoth Kris Steenhaut to Daniela Engert:

KS> If you have a removable drive which you want to boot from,

KS> Afaik, since FP6 the Zips are hardcoded in the OS2DASD.DMD as
KS> removable harddisks. So, why are you saying this?
I know much too little about OS2DASD to comment on this particular item. In
fact, I have no experiences of my own on booting from removable media other
than floppies. The cited paragraph applies to removable ATA devices (like the
Syquests) only, ATAPI devices (like the ZIP) are a different kind and aren't
controlled by the S506 base driver but the ATAPI filter driver.
The term 'reportedly' means that this statement comes from another user (Allan
Holm), on who's request these options were introduced. He has two different
firmware revision of his Syquest removable disk one of which has a bug: it
doesn't identify itself as removable. This buggy version enabled him to boot
from the Syquest, the fixed one failed. So, I added the /RMV /!RMV options
pair to bump this particular bit into the proper direction. Users of removable
ATA disks have the choice now to select between a *removable* disk or a
*bootable* disk.
bye, Dani
