  32. exactly my experience with Warp SMP - no noticeable change when in 
  33. single-app mode, but multi-tasking is remarkably enhanced. I wouldn't
  34. want to ever return to single-cpu mode. SMP works *really* well.

  50. While looking for info on HPFS's system area size, I noticed a discrepancy
  51. between what's reported as free space by DosQueryFSInfo(), and counting it
  52. up directly by reading the HPFS freespace bitmaps.
  53.  
  54. The discrepancy is 4096 sectors on all drives in both of my systems.  I'd
  55. like to get more info from other systems, particularly HPFS386 systems.

  60. As usual, the source for the program is included.

  62. What this does is gather information about the drive through the normal
  63. API means, then traverse all the freespace bitmaps on the drive, tallying

  66. The net effect of the discrepancy is that every drive (well, that's what
  67. I'm hoping to find out) has 2MB of unused, but unreachable space.
  68.  
  69. Later on, I'll try to establish where that free but unusable space is on
  70. the drive.

  115. We had a HP DAT 3 Streamer running with PSNS 5 FP30_9016 (Warp
  116. Server), worked not like a charme but worked (wrong size shown for
  117. large tapes, but no problems during backup and restore).

  230. booting from the Utility disks and run chkdsk ?: /F from the A: prompt.

  232. I had JFS fail (see my other postings) although it was supposingly
  233. checked and repaired ... it was not.

  260. This is I hope my final posting on Sytos under Warp Server for
  261. e-Business.  The recovery procedure (Rebound) fails very badly when
  262. there is a JFS volume on the system.  In fact it damaged the volume. 
  263. Chkdsk on booting up reported errors etc supposinly fixed them but the
  264. drive was invisible ... It could only be fixed by booting through
  265. floppies.

  267. I will do no more testing of Sytos on WSeB

  336. This is quite a ways beyond that level of investigation.  
  337.  
  338. CHKDSK doesn't check that value at all.  When run without the /F switch,
  339. it displays the difference between the drive's total size and its reported
  340. free space, minus all files and directories and HPFS system structures. 
  341. In other words, without the /F switch, it's blatantly incorrect. 
  342.  
  343. When run with the /F switch, it displays the difference between the
  344. drive's total size and its reported free space, minus only files and
  345. directories.  The result should be the HPFS system structures.  But it's
  346. off by 2048KB - the same 2048KB that's reported by the incorrect tally
  347. done without the /F switch.
  348.  
  349. That 2048KB, I now know, is not taken up by anything at all.  It's 4096
  350. free sectors that the operating system simply doesn't recognize.
  351.  
  352. I now also know that those 4096 free sectors are the last 4096 free
  353. sectors before the last 2KB freespace bitmap on the drive.  They aren't
  354. reserved for anything, and are just filled with the value 0xF6 for each
  355. byte.
  356.  
  357. The actual HPFS system area, BTW, is variable in size.  The largest part
  358. is the directory band, at the seek center of the drive, which is no
  359. smaller than 102,400 bytes, no larger than 8,192,000 bytes, and when
  360. somewhere in between, is on average the drive size divided by 102.64. 
  361. Aside from the directory band, there's logical sectors 0 through 23 (which
  362. can extend beyond 23, for larger drives), which is used for the BootBlock,
  363. SuperBlock, SpareBlock, freespace bitmap list, and a few other things. 
  364. Finally, there's also the freespace bitmaps themselves, each 2KB in size,
  365. with one required for every 16384 sectors on the drive (one bit per
  366. sector).

  417. Recent incarnations (3.05 or later) of Partition Magic are unfriendly to
  418. OS/2 in that they assume OS/2 has no need to access any FAT or logical
  419. partitions, assigning partition types to them that OS/2 doesn't
  420. understand. Go to ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/ and download

  425. The latter requires WIN32, the former DOS. You'll need to run one or the

  491. It doesn't matter what I'm triing - I don't get any cyrrillic letters.
  492. Now I'm running Aurora US and installed for example for country US 
  493. (001) or Russia (007).
  494. When I selected cyrillic by Language Viewer it doesn't take *any*

  568. I'm also having problems with JFS (JFSfix loaded, no difference) on my SMP
  569. machine. For some unknown reason ARJ (OS/2-version) isn't able to extract
  570. compressed files on a JFS partition. When I copy the file to either a HPFS
  571. or FAT partition, it works fine. That's the first problem, but a bigger
  572. problem is VACPP (fixpack 8). When I have the Odin sources on my JFS
  573. partition, I can't compile them completely because VACPP doesn't copy the
  574. .LIB files into the lib directory. When I do this manually and restart the
  575. make, it continues to the next DLL, but quits there with exactly the same
  576. problem. When I compile Odin from a HPFS partition, there is no problem!
  577.  
  578. Can you confirm these problems? It might be a bug that only shows on SMP
  579. machines. If you have these problems as well we should try contacting IBM.
  580. For now I'll format my JFS partition to HPFS :-((, because I don't want to
  581. risk my data.

  992. file on the installation diskettes.  Is there anything else I need, such

  995. to the beginning of the config.sys file?

  1022. If using a VIA or other supported chipset danis driver is the way to
  1023. go (its great!).  If using an intel chip you can simply make use of
  1024. the latest ibm1s506.add as I believe it supports ata66.

  1091.     Check out the new DANIADSK driver (IBMATAPI.FLT replacement) at 
  1092. Hobbes.  Just look at the todo listing, the most important one for some 
  1093. people is the ASPI router implementation.  If I am not mistaken, this is 
  1094. the only thing that is preventing current IDE CDR/CDRW users from using 
  1095. CDRecord/2 which is the port of the linux free CDR/CDRW recording 
  1096. software.  The reason why only SCSI CDR/CDRW's can be used is because 
  1097. we only have a SCSI ASPI router driver, no ATAPI ASPI router driver.  If she 
  1098. does implement this then there is a good chance I think that you guys can use 
  1099. CDRecord/2 in the future.

  1101.     Just curious, any chance of a DANISCOM (com port) or DANIS1284 
  1102. (printer) or DANISCROLL (scrollmouse) drivers in the future?

  1206. the later releases of the HDU-drivers. Telling that one thing to
  1207. do is to convince IBM to include them with the base OS. Got 
  1208. the impression that she did not want to make money of it though.
  1209. Could it be she is into programming this <g> for fun & glory only?

  1320. Somewhere I have heard that Tandem Non-Stop did extensive work with this
  1321. in OS/2 and a complete platform for this type works exists there.  It's,
  1322. as I recall, a big money operation to do it with them, like Citrix...
  1323. You *CAN* run WIN-95/Nt et. al. in the OS/2 game, but the price tag
  1324. starts at my recollection at about $6000 per site...

  1399. You might try the IBM1S506 replacement. It's called
  1400. DANIS506 and it is available at http://hobbes.nmsu.edut
  1401.  
  1402. I had to use it to get OS/2 to boot on one of my client's
  1403. machines. We had to replace the motherboard and the
  1404. IBM1S506 driver would hang during boot.
