An interesting sort of virus if so, and very clever - if it fires off
when the recipient reads something with a particular string in it which
isn't too common then most people probably wouldn't know they had the
virus and the number of messages, while annoying, would be below the
threshold of most people to really hunt it down. If it really is a
random low number of messages appearing seemingly from random users
then it would be very difficult to eradicate.

I don't think that's the same problem. I get the Winos2 phantom error on more
than one filetype even though the helper defined is a valid OS/2 application
with a relatively short path, and PMMail sits in \southsde\pmmail. For file
types that have a defined OS/2 application, and no Winos2 applications defined
for WPS associations, there's no rational reason why it should be happening.

No, I'm afraid that a "marketing ploy" is all it ever was. Two of the most
serious bugs still haven't been addressed:
1. Infinite timeout on TCP/IP connections, resulting in PMMail waiting an
infinitely long time for responses on an active TCP/IP session.
2. PMMail loses it's registration key and reverts back to "demo" mode, halting
systems that run it in batch mode.
3. Filters intermittently won't function.
4. Messages intermittently won't display.

Well, is sure isn't obvious to me. ;( I think it's interesting that although
BMT Micro knew that Southsoft was not supporting their customers who purchased
PMMail from them, and a BMT Micro person who knew about the problem with
Southsoft took over the product, yet the new software producers still ignored
former (and present) customers and continued to produce the product with
serious bugs that often prevent it's use.
I'm not impressed with the way the "new owners" do business. I hope they do
something in the near future that may change that opinion. Or perhaps someone
needs to do something to make it much more difficult for companies like BMT
Micro to sell ALL of it's products without backing up the implied warranty
when the producer won't?

Start it as:
postroad account_name /s /q
Substitute the account name you want to use that's defined (you can select
one of several rather than all at once). That will force it to send all
outbound messages and then quit. To receive only and quit use:
postroad account_name /r /q

As I indicated to you, some time ago, I believe that you are not
running the program from the proper (same) directory all the time.
That is the only resonable explaination for what you are seeing. If,
in fact, you are running it from the proper directory, there is a
problem, that nobody else has ever reported, to my knowledge. On the
other hand, if you are not running it ffrom the same directory all of
the time, you will get the results that you indicate, and that is a
user error, not a program bug (although the program could be changed
to prevent the user from doing silly things).

All I can suggest is that you follow Peter's advice in this thread first and
ensure that you have not got any unexpected associations.
If you are getting a Winos2 error, then there must be a link to a windows
program somewhere that it is trying to use in preference to the helper which
you have defined.

I repeatedly have this problem. Especially when I'm really
multitasking the net (lots of connections competing for the slim 56k
that's available). I have to close and reopen pmmail. Seems that
pmmail doesn't handle time-outs or missed packets very well. This is
most annoying.

Never had these problems and I've been using pmmail since it's inital
release -- but some OS/2 problems seem to be system/intallation
specific.

I've had nothing but good interactions with BMT Micro when purchasing
shareware. If asked, I highly recommend them.

Hello all,
Just downloaded the open prerelease from JunkSpy from Sundial.
The install routine isn't entirely bulletproof yet: It didn't like the
arbitrary host setting in my config.sys and said so, but didn't prompt me
to enter it manually. But when I changed this setting to the actual host
name supplied by my cable modem ISP, the picturesque and memorable string
of <node1e4b.a2000.nl>, and rebooted, it started up fine.
This program looks VERY promising...

I don't recall seeing a message from you previously on this topic, but that's
not the case here. It's always run from the same WPS icon, and always
pointing
to the same directory.

Then your knowledge is faulty. ;) I've picked up many older messages in this
and other newsgroups complaining of EXACTLY the same problems, some two or
more
major versions back. The one common thread through the descriptions is the
customer getting a response back from "technical support" that they've never
seen it before. Yeah, right.

The docs are in fact there! Help - contents - command line parameters.
There should also be a postroad.inf file in your Postroad directory.

I installed JunkSpy, it was smooth as silk for me. The first four
times I used it to retrieve my mail it worked flawlessly. However,
now it takes about 5 minutes to retrieve each and every message.
Other times InJoy times out (5 minutes), or I get a "Sock error
10032 from send". I have no idea what this means. Nor what
happened to cause the HUGE slowdown.

Note that the charter of comp.os.msdos.mail-news _explicitly_ covers
mail, news, and uucp under msdos and compatibles, and used to cover
ms-windows and os2 until they got their own groups (although uucp
under ms-windows didn't, so it can stay). the FAQs still list
information for os2 users and ms-windows users.

If this is MR/2 you're talking about (I think it's a safe guess :), then
you should know that in v1.61 I added some code that, AFAICT, eliminates
this problem. Basically, I found some Netscape-originating emails with
embedded NULL characters, which caused much trouble when using C++-based
string calls. These are now handled.
I see you're using v1.60 now. v1.62 is available on the MR/2 ICE web
page:

This had a few minor bug fixes above-and-beyond what you're using now,
including a little patch to accomodate a new FP10/11 problem.
Later versions are beta's, still, but there are some HUGE performance
enhancements in the current versions.

I have the same problem with BMPS and it seems PCX files. And I had no
asscoiatoins in PMMail for PCX. I would get a win-os2 error when trying
to open BMP files. PMJPEG (and now PMView) was the program I was trying
to use.
I did have assocations for word procesing and spreadsheet files to MS Word
and Excel (Office 4.2 - win16) which I had removed a little bit ago.
When I changed those associatons for (DOC, WPD< SAM, XLS etc) to
StarOffice, guess what happened when I tried to open a BMP? You got it.
Star Office opened. THe same thing happens to me with PCX files too.
If I remove the spreadsheet and word processing associtaions compeltely,
then I get and error that PMMail tried to open a program in the foreground
but that it got opened in the background instead. And what does CTRL-ESC
bring up? PMView with the BMP I was trying to view.
The only clue I have is that BMP is an octet-stream mime type like word
processing and spreadsheet.
The only other thing, I just thought of it, is that I haven't tried
disabling Object Desktop. IT always bugged me that OD has file viewer
built in and it seemed PMMAil should jsut be able to latch into those if
nothing else is specified.
How many folks with this problem are running OD 2.0?
I don't know if this ehelps anyone but it is definetely a bug somewhere
and it seems nothing you do with the associations wil change it much. If
OD is the culprit, then is there anything for OS/2 that gives me quick
Word file viewers and virtual desktops? I've not always been happy with
the speed decrease OD brings with it for it's usability but that's for
another thread.

tell you that in my case I always refuse to send the receipt, for two
reasons:
- I am not keen to let people know if I have read their email :-)
- The network is already submerged with trashmail en spam, no need to add to
this.......

No help. I have no idea what happened to cause this. I just tried
with your suggestion. The "Retrieving message 1 of 2" just stays
and there's no TCP/IP activity at all. The little yellow envelope
on JunkSpy is as far as it gets before the activity stops. Also, it
usually takes a very long time to log into the news server as well.
When I go back to non-JunkSpy operation everything zips right along.

When preparing to quote a full email/news article, MR/2 will truncate the
quote at the "-- " line and not quote past this. Of course, it's
sensitive to maked text and won't even bother with the sig block if a
specific text area has been marked for quoting. (And, MR/2 makes it easy
to move back and forth between source message and reply, so multiple
selected quote blocks are easy).
As far as placing a new sig on the tail of your reply, MR/2 can accomodate
complex setups. However, as a default, it just inserts a SIG block that
the user can edit from the main Utilities menu.
The reply system of MR/2 is template based. There are default templates
that you can edit, but you are free to create as many as you like. When
replying, you can opt to use the default template, or select from any
other template. Templates can be as as simple as to select a different
sig block, but they can do more than that, including quoting options,
modify attribution lines and even modify header lines. Templates make use
of reply-time variables that will insert text values when the template is
converted to the reply.
It's possible to even call REXX scripts inside a template. This is handy,
for example, to create heading lines or a sig with some external utility
program (or rexx itself) and then have MR/2 "include" a resulting file's
contents in the template expansion.

I was asking about the source sig, but I should have asked a question
about the outgoing sig -- given the quality of the rest of the sig
support, it undoubtably inserts a correct sigdash by default on
outgoing messages, does it always do that or is it optional?

Well, it answer most of it (it's got great sig support, particularly
for outgoing), but there's still the question of whether it looks (by
default, given the snipped description I think the user can probably
switch it around) from top to bottom or from bottom to top.

Now I understand. I didn't really know, so first I looked at the source
code and see that it searches from the top down. I confirmed this with
your test, and it chopped your test text. I've never considered that
possibility; I'll see if I can't adjust this :)

I thought about this some overnight. I'm not sure which behavior would be
"proper" now. I guess, if a previous mailer/user somehow included text
after a sig marker but before their own, it would be prudent to preserve
this. OTOH, stacked sigs are still just that, sigs.
What's your take on the proper behaviour?

It doesn't happen very often, and except for my little test posts I
can't recall it actually being on purpose, but when it was being
discussed on USEFOR some months ago, the issue of whether it should be
the first sigdash from the top or the first from the bottom came up
(i.e. what to do about false positives), so I went looking to see what
various programs did (that's one project and it lead to the other,
after looking into what was being done I made the mistake of saying I
could name 20+ programs, mainly newsreaders, that at the very least,
didn't quote the sig, and Sven Guckes called me on it for use as a seed
to an addition to his alt.fan.warlord page [1], I thought it was about
time I added another entry [30+ at the moment]).

First that the sigdash is a line with just the two dashes and the
space, so if it's quoted (for instance when you want to talk about the
sig itself), then it's no longer a sigdash and it's not a problem.
Having more than one sigdash (where it's not been quoted, but rather
occurred in the text either accidentally or on purpose) is a problem,
but a rather small one -- it just doesn't happen that frequently even
given the million plus messages each day (the exception being services
like newsfeed.com or deja.com that append their own). As I said in
another post this came up for USEFOR and I went looking to see what
people do (and from talking to them, the reason that some do it from
the top and some from the bottom generally has more to do with speed
and/or program design than any consideration for duplicate sigdashes).
My opinion was that you should use the first -- it makes sense to me to
scan for it when copying the text over for quoting and so that would be
the fastest for most people. I forget the exact percent but something
like 60-75% of the 20 or so programs we looked at, stopped at the first
sigdash, and the most likely reason you are going to encounter multiple
sigs is because some posting service thinks in body messages are
profitable.

Yup... There seems to be certain message configurations that just
plain hang it up...
