Subj: Re: PCMCIA on a Dell laptops--thanks for help
From: Matthew Shapiro <matthew@nope.psych.mcgill.ca>
Just a note of thanks to all the folks who contributed the information that
helped me
get my dell-233 inspiron running. Now it all works--pcmcia modem, video
(1024x768), sound, and parallel port zip-100 drive (which, BTW, is much faster
than with DOS98). The machine is finally useful and stable.
All I have to figure out now is why I have ghost drives under os/2 and how to
get fat32 access to work properly.

Subj: an Injoy tip
From: jay-lensgraf@ouhsc.edu (Jay Lensgraf)
In the past I have seen threads about how after working OK for a
while, Injoy would start failing to connect, sometimes trying six or
eight times before finally establishing a connection. It was
happening to me too. I tried reinstalling, backleveling, and even
tried out Ray Gwinn's com port software all to no avail. What finally
worked was when (for other reasons) I booted OS/2 with the hardware
detect enabled. Since then Injoy has connected on the first try every
time. Hope this helps someone out.

Subj: Installing a 3COM 905B-TX card
From: Richard Hinton <R-Hinton@govst.edu>
9/18/99
I surfed the 3COM site and got the "latest" driver for the card under
OS2.
I think it is 3c90x3x.exe file that I downloaded. I also DL'ed the
first two
for the windows partition. Anyway I already have a 3C509 (ISA) card
installed and working. I have the 509 for the cable modem and the 905
for the LAN. Everytime I use network install to install the 905 card
it un-installs the 509 card, and renders it useless under OS-2. How can
I install BOTH cards, one as a cable modem feed, and one as a LAN
card without conflict. I assume both will use DHCP because it is the
main
feed. Is there a page with specific instructions for two NIC under
OS-2???

Subj: Re: Help! Can't get PNP modem to work in OS/2 Warp 4
From: Jim Parker <jdparker@erols.com>
I solved my problem. I got a new modem: 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem
Model # 5687. Evidently the Creative Modem Blaster V.90 DI5660 is a
Win-modem inspite of what the salesman said and inspite of the fact that
neither their booklet nor their web pages say so explicitly. At least 3Com
says that their Win-modem is a Win-modem quite explicitly on the box.
This message coming to you from OS/2 Warp 4, Netscape Communicator 4.04,
finally connected to the internet.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
Oh, BTW does anyone want to buy a Creative Modem Blaster V.90 DI5660? It
works quite well in Windows 98.

Subj: Extreme Newbie Question
From: James Hirst <jhirst@worldnet.att.net>
I'm having a lot of difficuly getting my modem to work in OS/2. I have
a newer Aptiva machine that I was able to dual boot in Win98 and OS/2.
Its the first time I've had to do anything in OS/2 and don't know how to
get my modem to work. In Win98 it says my modem is a Rockwell HCF, but
all information on Rockwell says it isnt a modem but some kind of chip,
so I cant even tell exactly what kind of modem I have. Are there init
strings I have to place in the com.sys or is there a way to setup a
modem some other way in OS/2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with you on the Phoebe modem. I too bought one at a local
computer show for around $50 and it connects at 50000 or so most of the
time. It is an external and I am very pleased with it. No more
internals for me!

Do you have Warp 3 Connect? The normal Warp 3 non-Connect client has
dial-up networking but no ethernet networking support.
Warp 4 has ethernet networking support in all packages, tho.

Install the File and Print client; that's what I and many others have done.
When done correctly (not always easy, given the quality of the
documentation), it is the height of simplicity.

FROM : http://www.lermanet.com/reference/cipriano.htm
Earthlink Network, Inc.
A Church Of Scientology Company
37. On or about March 26th 1998, Mr. Moxon and I talked about my re-entering
the work force. Mr. Moxon
suggested Earthlink Network, Inc., in Pasadena. Earthlink Network is a Church
Of Scientology company. Mr.
Moxon contacted Mr. Sky Dayton, Chairman of Earthlink, who referred him to Mr.
George Williams, Director of
Dial-Up Sales. An interview was arranged, and I was hired March 27th 1998,
even though they were not hiring at
that time. Earthlink created a new sales management position for a girl named
Jennifer so they could move her up
creating an opening for me in the sales department. On March 28th 1998, I sent
an email to Mr. Moxon thanking
him for the introduction (See Exhibit 11 & 12).While at Earthlink Network in
Pasadena, California, I had access to
the Internet Service Provider's internal operations.
38. I was befriended the first day of my employment at Earthlink by a Mr.
Michael Hamra, another sales associate.
I quickly started a friendship with Mr. Hamra and spent countless hours
talking about various things including
how Earthlink started with investments, by Kirstie Alley, Tom Cruise, John
Travolta and other wealthy
Scientologists, into Sky Dayton's idea of an internet service provider. Mr.
Hamra told me how Sky Dayton had a
coffee shop before starting Earthlink and that he, because of being a
Scientologist and his friendships with
celebrity Scientologists, he was able to build a multi-million dollar company
that could, "Watch over the entire
internet from within the internet."
39. Additionally, Mr. Hamra told me he was one of the founding group of
Scientologist who ran Earthlink out of a
Glendale one room office where he made sales calls from a bathroom in the
office. Mr. Hamra said, "The Church
of Scientology now had a database of information on every subscriber which
included names, credit card info.,
credit reports, telephone info., computer info., who had referred them to
Earthlink and who were their previous
ISP providers." Mr. Hamra told me about the "other Earthlink building" which
was next door on New York
Avenue in Pasadena. Mr. Hamra told me that the other building was high
security and is where Earthlink and the
Church of Scientology did all the monitoring of the internet. Mr. Hamra was
always very interested in my
testimony in Berry v. Cipriano. It became clear to me that he was reporting
what I was saying to other in
Scientology.
40. I received many incoming sales calls while at Earthlink from individuals
who would ask, "Are you a bunch of
Scientologists?" We were trained to never admit that we were involved with the

Have you tried checking the 3Com web site's knowledge base for init
strings. Perhaps you have a bad (or incomplete) init string and Windows 98
leaves it in a state that is unusable. Then if you power it off for long
enough, it can't hold that unusable state and reverts to a usable state.
indows of course doesn't suffer because it has an ok init string buried
somewhere.
Good Luck

From: Jim Parker <jdparker@erols.com>
I installed it as PnP (I think there are switches to allow non-PnP but i
didn't even look). It was recognized by OS/2 and given COM2, 2F8, IRQ3.
I'm using the SIO drivers and no driver arguments were necessary. Using
InJoy dialer everything worked fine ---- for a couple of days. Then it
couldn't hold a connection to my ISP for longer than about 40 seconds. I
could dial up, authenticate, negotiate, then the line would drop. The
problem was not restricted to OS/2. It also was happening in Windows 98.
It could hold a connection to my work. Then I realized that there was a
difference between my work connection and my ISP: speed. I usually
connect to my ISP at speeds of about 44K-49K bps. I've never connected
to my work at a speed greater than 26K bps. Sure enough, after enough
attempts at connecting to my ISP I did get some connections around 33K
bps and the modem was able to stay connected. Very consistently the
modem could hold a connection of around 33K bps or less but could not
hold a connection of 40K bps or more. Never did get a connection between
33K bps and 40K bps.
But that's not the end of the story. My modem's phone line is connected
to a multi input jack that allows my computer and my son's computer to
both plug into the phone line. Obviously we both can't use it at the
same time. Well, I tried connecting my modem's line directly into the
wall jack and, behold, it worked and could hold connections of any
speed. Then I discovered that it would also work if it was plugged into
the multi input jack as long as my son's computer's modem was not
plugged into the jack. Then I discovered that once the connection has
been "really established" (I don't know what that means exactly but it
sort of means that you've connected to a couple of web pages
successfully), I can reconnect my son's computer without causing the
connection to drop. The next test I want to try is to have both
computers' modems connected to the jack but have my son's computer
turned off. I've been trying that for the last hour but only getting 33K
bps connections which don't prove anything.
Clearly my son's computer is generating some kind of interference which
causes high speed connections on my computer to fail at the start of the
connection. My son's computer does not experience any difficulty with
interference from my computer. He has a Zoom 56K modem.
Not really on OS/2 issue but I think it is an interesting story and may
prove useful to someone else having some modem difficulties. And I do
have a question: My son's computer is strictly Windows 98 and he has AOL
Instant Messanger and ICQ and perhaps a few other things as well. Is
there any possibility that there is some application he has which is
sending out some query to the modem which is causing this interference?
Something that might be polling to see if there is a connection and that
poll might be causing the interference.

Thanks much Tim & Les. I have found those pages and am impressed at
the amount of info they contain for the os/2 user.
I'm looking for a second ISP where I can create a personal website, &
have unlimited connect time. I use both Win 95 & Warp 3, but would
lean toward a provider that offers something for the os/2 community.
Other contenders with local numbers seem to be big planet, gte, mci
worldcom, & teleport. I'm curious as to whether anyone has experiences
pro or con with any of these, esp as regards os/2?

Bill,
I've been using Earthlink for 6 or 8 years now, since they started. I
was originally attracted since they did know OS2 and could help me get
set up in those past wild and woolley days. I've used them through
dial-up and ISDN, both.
I recently moved and am trying GTE Internetworking ADSL at the moment,
but I've still kept my Earthlink ISDN account. I've found GTE to be
very un-knowledgeable about os2 (they won't even talk about it and
unless I "guarantee" its not an OS2 problem, will not even take a
trouble report on a problem.
I keep thinking about dropping the ISDN support, but its been a
lifesaver backup to the ADSL, which is great when it runs (most of the
time), but seems to slow down a lot as they try to keep expanding the
service areas. It seems that once a month they are having to expand
another key service area, which causes a period of stabilization.
Hope this helps. If Earthlink (wish I could get ADSL from them) were
available to you, I can only say Go For It.

Maybe -- probably not.
Rule of Thumb:
The more crap you hang on a phone line -- the more crap
you'll enounter when you use it for data communications.
Eventually, you'll notice the problems even on voice.
Your modem is probably just more susceptible than your son's.
You really do not want more than one 'powered up' device on
the line at a time.

Not sure what the distinction is between what I said and what you said. To me
crap encountered = interference.
Anyway, I have noticed another thing: With my son's computer plugged into the
jack but powered off, my modem won't negotiate a speed greater than 33K bps
but will hold the connection. With my son's computer powered on and plugged
in, my modem will negotiate a higher speed but will not be able to hold it.

IBM also has an excellent PCI modem with specific OS/2 support.
