  16. today I have uploded a new version of CopyWave on my homepage.

  19. The program copies parts from an existing PCM-Wave file starting 
  20. from an indicated place in an indicated length into a new Wave file. 
  21. The files can be very big.
  22.  
  23. Now is the buffer size configurable.
  24. Additional can CopyWave now copying asynchron, one thread readed, 
  25. another thread write. This is useful if copy from one physical HD to 
  26. another physical HD. This can increase the speed of copying.
  27.

  91. E-commerce is the new buzzword, and if you believe what it says in the
  92. magazines, every business with an an ounce of sense is creating an 
  93. online store. But "enterprise level" tools are overkill for most small
  94. businesses, and they cost an arm and a leg. Plus, there don't seem to 
  95. be as many e-commerce site builder options for us OS/2 users.
  96.  
  97. Until now.

  99. At the general meeting on Tuesday, September 14, a representative from
  100. iTool will show us how easy it is to create an online store. If you've
  101. been thinking about selling something online -- or simply curious 
  102. about the procedure -- this is a meeting you can't miss.
  103.  
  104. What is iTOOL? 
  105.  
  106. iTool, which is a local Scottsdale company, hosts the e-commerce store
  107. at its site. You build and maintain the site through a Web browser... 
  108. so the OS you choose is irrelevant. It also means that you have no 
  109. extra software to purchase or install.
  110.  
  111. iTOOL combines high performance Web site hosting with its development 
  112. tools, giving you everything you need to run your organization online 
  113. in a single package. You can sign up for Web hosting alone -- they 
  114. include email accounts, interactive graphical statistics reports, 
  115. multiple domain name hosting, a ColdFusion Web Application Server, a 
  116. RealMedia Server, and so on. They also include site development tools 
  117. like a site creation wizard and specialty templates for business types
  118. (such as photographers and real estate agents).

  120. But what's bound to attract you is its turnkey electronic commerce 
  121. features. iTool uses browser based, database driven store 
  122. construction, has key word searching, and supports secure credit card 
  123. transactions with real time authorization. The cost for the basic 
  124. e-commerce site is $49.96 per month.

  128. This meeting will be the first one held at POSSI's new meeting site, 
  129. at Camelsquare. Give yourself a few extra minutes to find the place. 
  130. Camelsquare is on the northwest corner of 44th Street and Camelback, 
  131. which sounds simple enough. However, the room itself may take you a 
  132. few minutes to find. The Camelsquare offices are in lettered 
  133. buildings. Ours is in Building G, room G250.

  136. Tuesday, September 14th, at 7:00pm. The general Q&A session will begin
  137. at 6:30. We're sure to have an after-meeting meeting, too, where we

  139. haunts, or will we try a new site for food and drink? You'll have to 
  140. show up and find out.

  154. These are exciting times for Warpheads!  Two really big shows are 
  155. coming up to show off our pride and joy -- Warp Expo West in Los 
  156. Angeles on September 18th, and Warpstock '99 in October.  And 
  157. we're going all out to make sure you're involved, even if you can't 
  158. come to town.  We'll be fine tuning our activities in public meetings 
  159. on IRC on the #VOICE channel Monday, 5 PM PDT (0000UTC) and 
  160. on the #SCOUG channel Wednesday, 7PM PDT (0200UTC).

  162. The VOICE meeting is a Speakup to work out some of the logistics 
  163. details of our participation in these events.  We'll have continuous

  203.   You'll learn how to set up your own OS/2-based video editing system,
  204. so you can splice together movies, tv shows and anything else, when
  205. you're a part of Warp Expo West.

  207.   Multimedia expert Jerry Rash will have his own video editing system
  208. on-site for you to inspect.  And in an extended multi-period session of
  209. lectures and interactive demonstrations, you will learn how to easily
  210. and inexpensively add video editing capabilities to your own OS/2

  213.   Jerry will show movies and other video clips, and will explain the
  214. proper techniques for video capture using OS/2's native VideoIN and the

  222. cards, the chipsets that VideoIN supports and the one video capture
  223. chipset that seems to work best, the tricks for avoiding dropped frames,

  225. video formats including AVI, Indio, Ultimotion and the proprietary
  226. Microsoft ASF format.  You'll watch Jerry as he does video editing
  227. on-screen, connecting scenes together in true Hollywood fashion.  You'll
  228. find out which Fixpaks to apply for best performance and which new
  229. Fixpaks to avoid.

  490. install the operating system from scratch - each having a different
  491. configuration requirement: some has sounds, some are SVGAs, and so forth. 
  492. When finished, install close to 100 native programs to each of the six
  493. machines - have them all networked together - and ready for a full day of
  494. pounding from several hundred conference goers walking pass your booth - AND
  495. have a contingent plan in place such that if one of the machines fails - you
  496. would unplug that machine, plug another fresh machine in place - and have it
  497. back on-line immediately...
  498.  
  499. And what if you are given only minutes - not hours, not days - to have it all
  500. ready before the show starts?
  501.  
  502. How's that possible?

  527.  One Hundred Vendor100's And Exhibitors At Warp Expo West !!

  531.   One hundred OS/2 vendors, products and specialists are now a part of
  532. Warp Expo West.

  534.   "Guests will see a lot of OS/2 products," says Chairman Rollin White. 
  535. "We topped 100 last week and we're still adding new ones."

  537.   There's something new this year.  A network of machines will
  538. constantly make the software available for guests to try.  Two servers
  539. and a number of clients will give every guest a chance to try all the
  540. software they want, see how it works, how it feels, and what it can do. 
  541. Every Vendor100 program will be available on every machine.  There will
  542. even be online ordering.

  544.   "Vendor100 is clearly a better way to demonstrate software," continues
  545. White.  "Instead of wandering the show aisles and searching for the
  546. software you need, it's all on one machine in front of you.  You can try
  547. each application, switch back and forth between them to compare
  548. features, even check the vendor web sites to see what extra information
  549. is online."

  551.   The network itself runs OS/2 Wise Manager, from Serenity Systems. 
  552. "You can buy that too," smiles Kim Cheung, Executive Director for
  553. Serenity.  Cheung personally supervised the installation of all
  554. software.  Wise Manager allows software to reside on one server and be
  555. used anywhere on the network, with individual profiles for each user. 
  556. The user machines don't even need hard drives; they can boot directly
  557. from the network and all files are kept on the server.

  647. VMware emailed all interested OS/2 users some 
  648. questions, asking how they would like VMware to 
  649. support OS/2. We now took all these questions and 
  650. created a short survey at http://en.OS2.org/.
  651. Everybody is invited to take part, so we hopefully 
  652. get OS/2 supported one day!
  653.  
  654. We also started a new serie of guest editorials at 
  655. OS2.org. Holger Veit, porter of XFree86/2, started 
  656. with "OSnux or Li/2?". Each month another very 
  657. interesting guest writer will be presented.

  688.         Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West

  691.   Warp Expo West announces something very special - a live video feed
  692. over the Internet from the show floor.
  693.  
  694.   You'll be able to watch the video on your Netscape browser.
  695.  
  696.   The continuous broadcasts will begin when Warp Expo West opens it
  697. doors on Saturday.
  698.  
  699.   At this time we aren't exactly sure how many channels of video we will
  700. deliver.  The system itself can supply four different channels and we
  701. hope to have all four up and running.  There are multiple T1 lines in
  702. place to deliver these four video channels to the Internet backbone.
  703.  
  704.   There are some technical issues that still need to be worked out.  The
  705. audio feed is one we're still working on, and fine tuning the HTML code
  706. for your Netscape browser is another.
  707.  
  708.   Still, the video system worked fine in tests on both Saturday and
  709. Sunday and we're confident we can deliver live video to you on "show
  710. day" this coming Saturday.  There will be a special link on the Warp
  711. Expo West web pages and you won't need anything but your Netscape
  712. browser.
  713.  
  714.   This is not a "webcam".  This is full-motion video, just like you see
  715. on your television.
  716.  
  717.   Even with the multiple T1 lines there are some bandwidth issues and we
  718. may have to reduce the image size, increase the compression level or
  719. restrict the number of simultaneous users depending on how many people
  720. choose to "tune in".  A lot depends on the average bandwidth of viewers
  721. like yourself, since cable modems and DSL lines will load our video
  722. system more than 56K modems.  Consider this a part of OS/2 history, as
  723. we take a "first shot" at sending full-motion video to your computer
  724. screen.
  725.  
  726.   The idea for the live video feed belongs to Tim Katz of Demand
  727. Systems.  (Demand Systems is an OS/2 preinstaller and an exhibitor at
  728. Warp Expo West.)
  729.  
  730.   Tim Katz did the engineering design work, lined up the equipment and
  731. first tested the fully completed system on the Demand Systems network
  732. last Saturday.  He and Steve Schiffman, the Network and Facilities
  733. Director for Warp Expo West, then tested the system at the show site on
  734. Sunday.
  735.  
  736.   There was plenty of preparation for the final test.  "I had to ensure
  737. that our supplier network was capable of supplying the bandwidth
  738. required," said Schiffman, "and that meant checking on each segment of
  739. the uplink.  We'll have cameras in the lecture rooms and in the
  740. exhibitor area, and we'll supply a combination of live video feeds and
  741. repeat broadcasts of the most popular lectures."
  742.  
  743.   Tim Katz had to work out some last-minute connections and spent part
  744. of the testing time working on the HTML.  "Netscape supports live video,
  745. but Internet Explorer requires a special add-on which we won't support,"
  746. said Katz.  "The Netscape HTML is coded in a certain way and it took a
  747. bit of experimentation to get it right."
  748.  
  749.   And Tim McCoy, owner of Demand Systems and present during the tests,
  750. was very pleased.  "We like to come up with a solution no matter what
  751. the problem, and live video on the Internet is in everyone's future for
  752. seminars, trade shows, even family events such as weddings and any
  753. gathering of people.  It's cost effective."
  754.  
  755.   Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, said that "watching live
  756. video over the Internet is a great demonstration of why OS/2 is a
  757. leading technology platform."
  758.  
  759.   And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group
  760. (SCOUG), the show's sponsoring organization, said "This is the
  761. technology of the future and we're pleased that SCOUG can bring this new
  762. benefit to OS/2 users via Warp Expo West."
