Esther, the discussion that you are moderating, while quite interesting,
appears to have completely abandoned its original focus on Moore's book.
The early discussion here convinced me that Moore's book warrants focused
study and application. Terry Norton and I are applying Moore to the launch of
a meterware community. We are discussing this in the Shareware Issues section
of GO OS2SHARE.
We are currently discussing how to define the self-referencing target market,
and have decided that it will be drawn from the population of OS/2 users who
enjoy playing with REXX. What are the self-referencing groups within this
population? That is what we are now beginning to discuss. You and anyone
else with a keen interest in the Moore book would be welcome.

Say what? Who's abandoned the focus? The intention was to use Moore's book as
a starting point for discussion, and that's certainly ongoing.
I *am* a day late in posting my "Chapter 3" base message, but that's because
I've been doing some marketing of my own. (John W Thompson is going to be the
user group's speaker for our Feb 27 meeting, and IBM just agreed to send out a
mailing to every registered Warp user in the zip codes I specified.)

The -discussions- are certainly ongoing, but not more than 5% of the posts
reference Moore's book, use any of his terminology, or debate any of the
points that he makes. Almost all of the posts here, including many of my own
<guilty face> could easily have been written without reading the book at all.
And now you've invited another author. There is clearly no focus on -any-
topic here, much less a focus on Moore's book.
This is indeed my wife's idea of a book discussion meeting, but it certainly
isn't mine. <s>
If you want to really focus on the Moore book and see just how much of what he
says can be applied, join us in GO OS2SHARE, the Issues section, when you
finish moderating this free for all each day!
P.S. I hope that your party here continues to spawn other special interest
meetings. I think that you've started something very good, Esther.

(OK, you want to go back to the book? Let's go back to the book.)
From where I sit, the *entire* OS/2 market appears to be skewed towards the
innovators and early adopters. The whole bell shaped product life cycle curve
seems to be shifted so that the OS/2 market is actually overrepresented by
innovators and early adopters, and some early majority personalities. I would
think the frequency distribution is 35%, 55%, and 20% for innovators, early
adopters, and early majority users (these are sample figures and are *not*
supported by verifiable data). This is typified by OS/2's share of the OS
marketplace; the early/late majorities have made a conscious decision to
acquire Winxx, while the laggards are picking up Win95 when they buy preloaded
systems.
So, given this scenario, how does one leap across the chasm, when the chasm is
created by -- IBM? It was IBM who marketed a 32 bit OS when 16 bit systems
were the rage, and now all those innovators and early adopters are stranded
where most ISVs are -- stuck on the left side of the chasm.
No one, not even Stardock and Indelible Blue, will cross the *OS/2* chasm
alone. The lesson here (listen up, IBM) is for all smart ISVs to truly
contemplate leaping across the OS/2 chasm to -- Microsoft.
Moore's book leaves one to envision a chasm of fixed size which must be
crossed. I suggest a better "picture" - that of a group of ISVs, individuals,
and companies adrift on a iceberg which is slowly pulling apart from the land
mass.

Yes, but the land mass is sinking and the iceberg is not.
The problem isn't that we're on an iceberg. It is that we have not yet
learned how to make lemonade with it.

Hmmm. I wonder if BAUG will ask them to do the same?
I'd love to go see what he has to say. Unfortunately, I don't drive, but I
can't see spending $20 taxi fare to their transit-unfriendly choice of a site
for their meetings. <sigh>

Actually, the reason we got him on the 27th is because BAUG asked for him on
the 26th. So you do need to contemplate the expensive taxi fare.
POSSI will be working with local area OS/2 ISVs to create an OS/2 Application
Showcase. In addition to John W speaking, we'll have a tent outside with OS/2
ISVs displaying their products to the 500-or-so people we expect to attend.
I'm inviting ISVs based on geography (Phoenix and Tucson ISVs get first dibs),
but I expect to range outside Arizona to the rest of the southwest as well --
especially for really *cool* applications.

I'm telling ISVs that for their fifty bucks we given them an 8-foot table and
an extension cord. They can do anything on/with/around that table that they
want.
But OS/2 vendors in Arizona get first priority. For instance, I've signed up
Computer Cosmos/2 (OS/2-only software store), SSG (Perspective database/report
writer), Steve Reed (the guy that wrote the OS/2 Blackjack and OS/2 Poker).
All are in Phoenix. I'm waiting to hear back from the RightFax folks, who are
in Tucson. Bob Stuart, the guy who wrote the shareware Flextext, can't make
it. (I count shareware equally, after all.)
IOW, you could come out here... but I want to hear back from the more local
vendors first. And I'm soliciting based on geography, so after AZ I'll talk to
folks in southern California, Utah, New Mexico.
I presume that our 75 degree weather doesn't discourage you from considering
the trip, eh?

Esther,
I guess the word is not too widely know (being on the nets it does not matter
much), but I have relocated to Colorado, specifically Colorado Springs. So
besides owning a Townhouse back in Reston, the snowstorm has not bothered me

Your mentioning this earlier / elsewhere is the only reason I know he'll be
here. I'm hoping it will be announced, and that they will choose a larger
venue, such as the Mountain View site the general meetings are, I think, held.
Hmmm.... The 26th is a Saturday, so it's possible it will be held during the
day, when buses still serve the area. Maybe I'll be lucky and not have to pay
the taxi driver after all...! <g>
