Notes for Reviewers of OS201 Using OS/2 2.1 Applications - v2.06 Beta
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Microtransfer believe they have taken a most unusual approach by developing
a computer-based-training course using the highly underrated IPF
capabilities of OS/2. OS201 is part of a range of OS/2 courses we have
developed.
This course can run on ANY OS/2 system (version 1.3 and higher) - no extra
hardware or software is required.
The course is aimed specifically at typical OS/2 users in a "corporate"
environment. We therefore cover basic concepts and techniques
for accessing a typical LAN and Host system (Chapters 8 and 9).
Note that we have developed our own "hypergraphic tool menu" for navigating
around the online IPF course making this extremely easy to use. This
feature could be applied to practically any kind of OS/2 online document,
be it reference material or application help.
Points of interest include:
1. Extensive use of hypergraphics and hypertext throught the course.
2. Extensive use of recognizable OS/2 Workplace Shell components and OS/2
application examples.
3. The course is aimed at novice users. They can hit the ENTER key to get
through the first Using the Course panels (confident users can skip
straight to the Course material if they wish). When they get to the Tool
Menu they MUST now use the mouse to navigate out.
4. Route Map. Provides graphical layout of the course - can be accessed
from wherever you are. Allows you to get directly from one point to
another without having to tackle PREV and BACK keys or the Table of
Contents.
5. Q & A. Every section has a brief Question & Answer session at the end.
This is again oriented to point-and-shoot style operation and helps the
user to recognize familiar OS/2 features and actions.
6. Chapter 2. Using Windows and Icons, features several INTERACTIVE
exercises in the use and operation of window and panel features.
7. Because the course is simply an INF document, it can be easily and
cheaply distributed and shared by multiple users across a LAN.
8. Each section can be printed out (including graphics) - so you can create
your own hardcopy reference manual if you wish.
9. The course can be used as a post-training reference guide as part of a
library of INF documents.
We think this is the most innovative use of OS/2's IPF we have seen so
far (if you don't mind us saying so). It is a shame there is not an OS/2
award for IPF work - we think we'd have a pretty fair shot at it.
