  11. The files includes in this set constitute Beta release 1.10 of the MaKe Boot
  12. Manager PARTition (MKBMPART) program.  This initial release is fully func-
  13. tional although some ease of use enhancements are planned and may be imple-
  14. mented depending on how the initial version is received.  The files included 
  15. in this file set are:

  17. MKBMPART.EXE - The program executable.
  18. RMBMPART.EXE - A program that removes a Boot Manager partition created by
  19.            MKBMPART.  Note: this program CAN NOT be used to remove a 
  20.            Boot Manager partition NOT created by MKBMPART.
  21. PART_SEL.HLP - Help file for selecting a partition to be modified to allow
  22.            MKBMPART to install the Boot Manager program.
  23. STRATEGY.HLP - Help file for selecting a Boot Manager partition creation 
  24.            strategy.
  25. MKBMPART.WRI - The MKBMPART user manual in Microsoft's Write Format. I'm a
  26.            firm believer in the use of different fonts and type faces to
  27.            emphasize or call attention to particular points in a document.
  28.            I'm assuming that most people who will be interested in this
  29.            program have access to the Windows Write mini-application.  If
  30.            you would like the Users Manual in a different format, please
  31.            contact me by e-mail.
  32. MKBMPART.TXT - The MKBMPART user manual as plain ASCII text.  This file is 
  33.            suitable for printing at ten (10) characters per inch and sixty
  34.            lines per page.
  35. README.1st -   These release notes.

  37. This program is copyrighted by the author as an unpublished work (also known
  38. as a work in progress).  The final version resulting from beta testing will
  39. be copyrighted as a published work.  Please do not redistribute the beta
  40. version of this program to other Bulletin Board Systems (BBS).  This will 
  41. only have the affect of making copies of the program that have not had the 
  42. benefit of full beta testing available to possibly unsuspecting users.

  44. If you choose to participate in the beta testing of MKBMPART, I can offer
  45. the following advice based on my experience during the development and alpha
  46. testing of the program:
  47.  
  48. o       MKBMPART was designed to work with the version of FDISK.COM shipped
  49.     by IBM as part of the OS/2 2.1 General Availablility (GA) distribu-
  50.     tion.  This file's size is 105,399 bytes and is dated 4-29-93.  If 
  51.     you do not have access to this version of OS/2's FDISK, please let
  52.     me know.
  53. o       Back up any programs or data that can not be readily reinstalled
  54.     or retrieved from an existing back up.
  55. o       If you have access to a recent version of the Norton Utilities or
  56.     similar program that can be used to create a "rescue" diskette, 
  57.     create such a disk (e.g., a bootable floppy with a variety of hard
  58.     disk repair tools and an image of the disk's partition tables and
  59.     boot records).  At a minimum, make sure you have a bootable floppy
  60.     with FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM.
  61. o       Both MKBMPART and RMBMPART require that the system they are running
  62.     on be rebooted after they have made their changes.  Because of this
  63.     they should not be run in a window under either Windows or OS/2.
  64. o       If things go wrong, try running RMBMPART before turning to other
  65.     possibilities for restoring your system.  During testing, several 
  66.     bugs that appeared to have thoroughly messed up the system were un-
  67.     coverred.  Their impact was repaired by simply running RMBMPART.
  68. o       The previous hint implies that putting RMBMPART on a floppy is a
  69.     good idea and relying on it still being accessible on the hard disk
  70.     you want to install Boot Manager on isn't.
  71. o       If you use the same floppy to save the system image for several dif-
  72.     ferent systems, only the last system's image will be accessible 
  73.     since the file that contains this information will be overwritten
  74.     at each succeeding use of the floppy.  A possible enhancement to
  75.     the program is to allow mutiple system images to be stored and ident-
  76.     ified.  This feature has not yet been implemented.
  77. o       Norton Disk Doctor will generally report that a Boot Manager parti-
  78.     tion created using the aggressive strategy is invalid.  Its lying.
  79.     By the time it runs the copy of Boot Manager its complaining about
  80.     has already successfully executed.
  81. o       Read the users manual. (Please!!!  I need feed back on the Users Man-
  82.     ual and these release notes too for that matter).
  83. o       Tell me what happenned when you used MKBMPART.

  92.             Changes Since 1.00
  93.  
  94. This beta release of MKBMPART.EXE corrects a problem found during the testing 
  95. of the 1.0 beta.  MKBMPART would erroneously not identify all of the parti-
  96. tions defined if the partition table was not dense.  That is, if there were
  97. unused partition table entries between valid entries.  This defficiency has
  98. been corrected in this release.

  100. The documentation has been enhanced to add a list of the possible error mes-
  101. sages along with an explanation of each message.

  104.             Known Defficiencies
  105.                        
  106. As of the release of Beta 1.1 of MKBMPART the following defficiency is known
  107. to exist:
  108.  
  109. One beta tester reported that MKBMPART.EXE beta 1.00 erroneously reported 
  110. that his system had only one FAT and that it was therefore unable to operate
  111. on his system.  I investigated this problem to the extent of configuring my
  112. test system to match the logical definition of his system.  I was unable to
  113. duplicate the problem on my test system.  The beta tester reporting this 
  114. problem is using an IDE drive with more that 1024 cylinders and a translating
  115. controller.  I do not have a system with this type of hardware although my
  116. experience on my development system (520 MB Fujitsu SCSI hard disk) indicates
  117. that the problem is not simply related to the size of the target drive.

  119. I would be very interested in hearing back from other users who have systems
  120. with large (> 1024 cylinders) IDE drives that utilize translating control-
  121. lers.
