CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
GENERAL INFORMATION
Clearlook - The Cellular Word Processor is an easy-to-use and comprehensive word processor for OS/2 Presentation Manager environments. This extensively flexible product helps users quickly prepare sophisticated documents using a clear visual interface, backed by 32-bit power.
Clearlook is designed exclusively for OS/2 Presentation Manager and exploits OS/2's 32-bit architecture and multi-threading capabilities. Clearlook's unique concept for structuring text documents allows users to intuitively interact with powerful text objects.
THE HISTORY OF CLEARLOOK Clearlook, history
Clearlook was formed in early 1994 when two international software companies merged resources and talent. Clearlook conscientiously selected a small cadre of highly intelligent and creative professionals, insistent upon delivering a state-of-the-art product that exploits the power of OS/2. This, equalled with our commitment to our users, is what makes our product a success. We value the bond of trust we have established with our clients and take great pride in the fact that our clients are a part of our entire development process -- creating innovative, high-quality products that grow with your expanding needs.
Clearlook's leading designers have created customized word processors for DOS since the early eighties. Years of careful observation of users' needs and intuitive responses were crafted to produce a series of word processors to fulfill the requirements of administrations and international organizations.
When OS/2 released its 32-bit architecture, the applications were transferred to OS/2, however the designers were not satisfied. The entire application was completely redesigned, blending this decade of experience to create a word processor with the extraordinary capabilities of the new OS/2.
We take our business seriously at Clearlook. Every technical staff member brings over twenty year's experience to the information technology industry. Clearlook is positioned to produce products that make the best possible use of, and easily integrate with cutting-edge technologies.
CLEARLOOK CORPORATION -- Dedicated to creating innovative, high-quality products that grow with our customers' expanding needs.

3. Double-click on the INSTALL.EXE icon to begin the install program.
See Clearlook Installation screen following page in Figure 1-2. Continue with step 4.
Installing from a command prompt installing, from command prompt
1. Open an OS/2 Window. If you do not see one, double-click on OS/2 System and open the Command Prompts folder. Open an OS/2 Window (not a DOS Window).
2. Insert Disk 1 and type:
[C:\]a:install
3. Press Enter to begin the install program, the installation screen is displayed as in Figure 1-3. To continue see step 4.
Figure 1-3 Clearlook Installation Screen
Notice the boxes Install from, Install to and Create directory. The larger, scrollable box is display only and shows the logged messages.
Use the buttons along the bottom to:
- initiate the installation (Install)
- stop the installation after it has started (Abort)
- terminate the installation program without completing the installation (Exit)
To continue installation, perform the following:
4. Verify the Install from field indicates the correct floppy disk drive where the first Clearlook installation disk is inserted.
5. Verify the Install to field indicates the hard disk drive where you want Clearlook to install.
6. Verify the Create directory field. This indicates the directory path created when Clearlook installs. The default is \CL and may be changed to any valid directory path.
7. After modifying or accepting the fields, click on the Install button.
The status window changes indicating the action performed. An example is Copying C:\CL\bin\cl.exe. The Install button is inactive and the Abort button active, allowing you to abort the installation. A multi-threaded message appears beneath the status area, demonstrating concurrent processing.
The file copy continues until all necessary files are copied from the current diskette to the hard disk directory. A prompt window requests the next disk to be inserted into the same floppy drive. The scrollable status area displays the installation disk number and the files which were copied from the diskette.
A pop-up window displays the message Installation completed successfully. Press the Ok button to remove the pop-up window and view the installation status. To terminate the installation, press the Exit button.7
GETTING STARTED
PROGRAM OPERATION
This chapter provides a general introduction to Clearlook. Various ways to open and create documents are described.
Mouse, Keyboard and General Program Use
Clearlook's use of the pointing device conforms to the Presentation Manager applications standards. Operations include using buttons 1 and 2; opening, closing and moving windows; opening menus and selecting menu items; and using folders and templates.
All Clearlook speedbar and menu functions may be activated with the keyboard. Clearlook allows complete keyboard customization, (see the section Customizing Clearlook). For simplicity, the examples describe manipulations using the pointing device. All manipulations can be performed with the keyboard as well.
After the Install
The Clearlook Folder icon is displayed on the Desktop, shown in Figure 1-4.
Figure 1-4 The Clearlook Icon on the Desktop
Double-click on the Look icon to open the Look - Icon View as shown in figure 1-5.

Provided Documents
The Look folder contains these sample documents: the Clearlook Program icon and the Template and Trnsfrms folders.
README.CTX This file contains late-breaking news
BORDERS.CTX Sample borders
DOCSTRUC.CTX Sample cell structures
TABSTOPS.CTX Sample Tab Stops, Tab Markers and Indented Paragraphs
View or print these documents as you wish. Each sample document describes a set of Clearlook's features. The documents' text indicates the functions used to create it. If you are a user never reading manuals, these sample documents may be an easy way to acquaint yourself with Clearlook's features.
You may delete any of these icons. Deleting a document icon removes the document from the system. Deleting the Clearlook Program icon removes the program object from the folder, but does not remove the Clearlook executable file from disk..
Opening Clearlook Documents open document document, open
There are three ways to open a Clearlook document:
1. Drag the document (any .CTX icon) over the Clearlook Program icon to open the document. This may be initiated from any folder in the workplace shell.
2. Double-click on the document (any .CTX icon) to open it.
2. Double-click the Clearlook Program icon. Use the Text | Open menu functions in the status window to open documents.
There are two ways to create a Clearlook document:
1. Open the templates folder (double-click on Template). Drag a template to the Look folder and release the button. A new document corresponding to the template is created.
2. Double-click the Clearlook Program icon. Use the Text | New menu functions in the status window to create a new, unnamed document.
Entering License Information license information
The first time Clearlook is activated, you are prompted to enter license information, as shown in figure 1-6. License information is printed on your registration card. If you downloaded Clearlook from a bulletin board service, contact Clearlook Corp. to obtain a valid license.
You should use a unique license number on each system on which Clearlook is installed.
Figure 1-6 The License Information Display
In the Name field, enter your name.
In the License field, enter the License Number
In the Code field, enter the Access Code
Note: Clearlook will function without the required license number and access code; however, the print function will patch printouts with purchasing information and the spell checker will only function on a document named DEMO.CTX.
When the correct license number and access code are entered, Clearlook displays the line as shown in Figure 1-7.(
Figure 1-7 The License Information Display
Once a valid license has been entered, this dialog will not appear on subsequent activation of Clearlook. The license information can be viewed and changed in the Settings notebook.
Reinstalling Clearlook removes the license information from the system. Using an identical license in multiple installations may cause the license information to be cleared as well. If this is the case, re-enter a valid license.
Status Window status window
Clearlook supports operations with multiple documents opened simultaneously. The traditional Multiple Document Interface (MDI) found in many older applications was removed from CUA specifications and its use is no longer encouraged. OS/2's workplace shell with its object-oriented approach is a very good replacement for the MDI. Clearlook fully supports opening and creating documents from the workplace shell.
Some users like to access their documents from the workplace shell, while others prefer to open their documents from directory lists. To fulfill the various users' needs, Clearlook uses a Status Window. The Status Window allows Clearlook to bundle access to multiple documents and manage them very efficiently. Whenever Clearlook is activated, the Status Window is displayed.
All open objects are listed in the Status Window. To enhance functionality, the user may add objects to the Status Window and program them as desired. The Status Window is a 'handle' to active Clearlook documents: Hiding the Status Window hides all open Clearlook windows in a single operation. Moving the Status Window moves all open Clearlook windows if the Ctrl key is kept pressed during the move. (Maximized windows are not moved.)
The default configuration for the Status Window contains an object for the Thesaurus, Userlex, directory access, Clearlook's window list and setup windows. See Figure 1-8.
Figure 1-8 Clearlook Status Window
The Setup object enables users to access Clearlook's customization features. (See Customizing Clearlook.)
The Open Window object accesses a list of all open Clearlook windows.
The Thesaurus object accesses the thesaurus for meanings, synonyms, antonyms, compared, and related words.
The Userlex object provides user definitions for Spell Checking and character substitution. As an example, an entry definition of "cl;Clearlook" indicates "cl" is automatically substituted with "Clearlook" when typing.
The directory object accesses the current directory. It is similar to Open from the Text pull-down menu. The menu item Open displays the files with extension .CTX, while directory displays all files in the directory.
Opened documents appear as an icon in the Status Window. To select a document, double-click on the icon.
To program an object or create a new one, open the pop-up menu with the second button of the pointing device.
The Text pull-down menu includes New, to create new text documents, Open to open existing text documents, and Exit to close the Status Window, which terminates the Clearlook program.
The Open item from the Text pull-down menu displays an Open Document Dialog with a scrollable directory and file list. Also included are file manipulation functions (Copy, Move, Delete, Rename, etc.) via buttons at the bottom of the display. The scrollable directory displays subdirectories in alphabetical order.)
