  48. Getting Started

Getting started is easy, because HyperACCESS Lite is so obvious and intuitive.  The instant you start it, the Phonebook pops open. To connect with any system, you just double-click its icon in the Phonebook. To add a new system, double-click the New Session icon. You are prompted automatically for information needed to connect with the system. Remember, on-line help is available whenever you need it.

After you select a system from the Phonebook, HyperACCESS Lite dials your modem and connects you with that system.  Once it establishes the connection, information from that system appears on the terminal screen, and you can begin typing input to the system.  You can scroll back to view information that moves off the screen.  Use the tool bar buttons to perform operations such as capturing text, transferring files, or to disconnect.

  90. Here are a number of technical tips and pointers that may help you to get better results from HyperACCESS Lite:

  92.                      Ways to Start HyperACCESS Lite
  93.

Once installed, HyperACCESS Lite can be started from the OS/2 desktop by double-clicking its icon, or by entering HALITE at the OS/2 command prompt. There are certain parameters that you can use to affect how the program behaves when you start it. You may include the parameters among the settings OS/2 associates with the program's icon, or type the parameters after HALITE at the command prompt.

To make the program call a particular system the instant it starts, all you need to do is include as a parameter the filename of the desired system (a filename ending with .HAL). To make the program's terminal emulators use a particular character set, include the /CP parameter as described below.

  99.                 Calling Systems Not Shown in the Phonebook

Although the Phonebook shows only systems whose session files (files ending with .HAL) are in the same directory as HyperACCESS Lite, you can keep session files other directories, as well. To call a system whose session file is in another directory, simply close the Phonebook, select File/Open and enter its directory and filename, and then click the Dial button.

  104.              Setting the Characters Used by Terminal Emulators
  105.  
  106. HyperACCESS Lite by default uses the character set most common for ANSI terminal emulation (code page 437), which contains linedraw and other special characters often displayed by BBSs. By starting HyperACCESS Lite with the /CP parameter, however, you can can cause the program to use the character set OS/2 is currently configured to use.  Or you can use the parameter /CP:XXX, replacing XXX with the number of the code page you prefer. Refer to OS/2 documentation for information on different character sets and code pages.

  109.               Using HyperACCESS Lite with Unsupported Modems
  110.

HyperACCESS Lite contains predefined support for hundreds of today's most popular modems. However, if the specific brand and model of your modem is not listed, you might try picking a modem name that seems like a close approximation. If no close approximation exists or gives the desired results, try selecting Hayes-Compatible. If your modem requires setup commands in addition to those that appear when you dial using the Hayes-Compatible selection, you can add them by selecting Modem Setup on the Communications page of the Properties notebook.

  114.                 Calling Systems Whose Parity Settings Vary

HyperACCESS Lite's unique CommSense feature saves you work by figuring out the appropriate data bit, parity, and stop bit settings the first time you call a system. It does this by observing the flow of data that occurs upon connection. This works beautifully with most systems. However, if you encounter one of the rare systems that changes its data bit, parity, and stop bit requirements midstream during a call, you may find it necessary to manually select the correct data bit, parity, and stop bit settings, rather than selecting "auto-detect."

  119.                     Omitted Features and Capabilities

HyperACCESS Lite was designed to be a small, fast, and easy-to-use program that would meet the basic communications needs of OS/2 users. Due to size restrictions and the need to keep the program simple for beginning users, many capabilities of Hilgraeve's retail products were left out. For example, Zmodem file transfer protocol lacks file recovery, and VT52 and VT100 terminal emulators lack remote printing. Identifying other omissions may be easy, particularly for experienced modem users. Please understand that none of the omissions were intended to frustrate or annoy you. We sincerely want using this program to be an enjoyable experience.

  124.                            A Few Corrections

  126. The following errors were after it was too late to correct them, due to production schedules:

  128. -  Procedures help for "Calling a Phonebook Entry" incorrectly implies that you can call an entry selected in the Phonebook by clicking a button in the Tool Bar. To call an entry selected in the Phonebook, you must either double-click that entry, or display its object menu (right-click on the entry) and select Connect. Tool Bar buttons apply only to the session window , not Phonebook entries, so clicking the Tool Bar button always calls the system whose name is shown in the session window title bar.

  130. -  Fonts help incorrectly states that the font you select will be used for printing. The selected font is used for display only. For printing, HyperACCESS Lite always uses your OS/2 printer driver's default font.
