You are currently deciding what (if any) password you would
like to use for your story. Most of the time, the best choice
is not to use a password, especially if you're new here.
A password will *NOT* restrict who may read your story; it
only restricts who may add to the story. If you and your
friends would like to write a story without any interference
from other people ("Hey, why did you kill off my favorite
character?!?!"), a password will allow you to keep control
of the direction of the story.
A few notes about passwords:
1. It's your responsibility to give the password to anyone you
want to be able to add to the story. The message base on
the BBS is a good place to do this.
2. Write the password down! If you forget it, you will be
locked out just like everyone else.
3. If you and the other people who have the password don't
keep the story moving along, the door will strip the
password and allow anyone to add to the story. By default,
someone must add to the story at least once every 72 hours
to maintain a password (but this time period is sysop-
configurable). Once a password on a story has expired, it
can't be re-instituted: the story will be wide open from
that time on.
If, after reading this help, you're confused about what
passwords do or why you might or might not want to use them,
choose *NOT* to use a password -- that's the safest choice. If
you've already said "Yes" to the question about using a password,
you can still back out by pressing the {Enter} key at the "Please
Enter Desired Password" prompt.
Several "hot keys" will work at just about any time while
you are in Fiction Factory.
Ctrl-Z Brings up help. As much as possible, FictFact will
tailor the help it provides to what you're doing
at the time, so if you're confused, give it a try!
Ctrl-O Lists the people (if any) who are in the game on
other nodes. You may want to send those people
messages, to chat with them, or to work on a story
together so that you can take turns adding to the tale.
Ctrl-E Allows you to enter a one-line message to a user on
another node.
Ctrl-T Allows you to enter chat mode. From there, you can
/PAGE people on other nodes to chat with you.
