EleBBS v0.05g1 - release notes
==============================
June 27th, 1999
If you are upgrading from an previous EleBBS, RA or tcRA32 installation,
please make sure you read UPGRADE.005!
Congratulations on downloading the fifth public gamma release of EleBBS.
This version represents three years of developing time, including almost a
year of private beta testing combined with all the bug reports and ideas
from EleBBS v0.01.g1 till EleBBS v0.04.g1. This new release introduces a
NEWSSRV which allows you to make your messagebase available for newsgroup-
reading.
If you are installing EleBBS for the first time, and do not have a current
EleBBS/RA/tcRA32 setup available please read the INSTALL.TXT instructions.
EleBBS is completely configuration-file compatible with RA v2.5x and thus
can be used as a 'drop-in' replacement for your current RA BBS.
Starting December 1st 1999, this program will display an update-reminder
message (but will run further as normal) each time a user logs on, this is
implemented to make sure you always use the latest version. A newer Gamma
version will be available at this time.
EleBBS comes in 3 native versions: DOS, OS/2 and Win32 (Windows95/98/NT).
The DOS and OS/2 programs are "console" mode programs (aka text-mode)
and the Win32 (Windows95/98/NT) version also comes in two variants. One
has a full-blown GUI (graphical user interface) built around it, the other
one also runs in "console" mode.
There needs to be some considerations when using the Windows95/98/NT version.
In Windows, only one program can have control over the modem, and any other
programs are locked out from using the same modem. Because of this, EleBBS
has to release the modem. However, when releasing the modem, Windows toggles
the DTR signal which most modems interpret as a "Hangup" command.
The only way to fix this problem is to instruct your modem to ignore this
toggling. Most modems accept "AT&D0" (without quotes) as a signal to do this,
but check your modem manual to make sure.
Also, because the Win32 version of EleBBS does not need a FOSSIL driver,
there won't be any loaded. To fix this, EleBBS always executes the SFOS.BAT
and UFOS.BAT files to be able to load/unload the batchfiles, see the example
batchfiles for an explanation on how to use them.
Good luck with it, and if you find any bugs, be sure to report them to me.
Yours Sincerely,
Maarten Bekers.
