~FIRST HELP
The first thing you will notice is the Post Time clock (upper right hand corner) ticking away. That's how
much time there is until these horses start racing! You can always speed up the Post Time clock by
pushing the "F" key a few times. But, don't go too fast...you need to make some bets first. Why not go to
the Betting Menu by pushing the "B" key (after pressing "Any Key"), and see what you can do about
making a little "virtual money" at the track!
~FIRST BETTING MENU
This is where the action is! Now, you will need to Go to the Betting Window and place a few wagers.
You will have to wait in line before you can place a bet, so don't waste any time getting there. Remember
that you can push the "F" key a few times to speed things up if you get tired of waiting!
~FIRST BET
Why not try a simple $2 bet to get things started? Pick a horse that looks good, and bet it to Win, Place
(1st or 2nd), or Show (1st, 2nd, or 3rd). For information on the types of bets you can make, select "Help"
after entering the amount.
~FIRST CLOCK
Now look how past the clock is ticking! You can increase the speed of the clock up to about a minute per
tick. The "S" key will slow the clock down if you get it going to fast.
~FIRST VIEW FORM
To view info on the horses for this race, at the prompt, put the number of this race in and hit Enter.
~FIRST VIEW HORSE
To view info on one of these horses, at the prompt, put the number of the horse in and hit Enter.
~CURRENT RACE INFO
The above line reports the following information:
[Race]
The current race in today's session of races. Each day there are a total of 10 races in Data Downs (or 3
races in Data Downs 'Lite').
[Length]
How far the horses have to run in this race. Race lengths vary from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 and 1/8th of a
mile. One mile is equal to 8 furlongs. Each horse has it's own unique ability to perform at a given
distance. Some run well in short races, others run well in long races, and still others don't run well at all!
[Conditions]
What condition the track is currently in. There are four possible conditions: Dry, Normal, Raining, and
Muddy. Again, each horse has it's own unique ability for each type of track condition.
[To Post Time]
How much longer until the horses begin racing. This is how much time you have to make bets, look at
the racing form, borrow money from the bank, etc., until the horses actually start their race. You can
speed up the Post Time clock by pressing the "F" key several times, or slow it down by pressing the "S"
key several times.
~JOCKEYS AND ODDS
[Jockey]
Last name and first initial of the jockey riding the horse. Each jockey has a riding ability, which
contributes to the overall performance of the horse. The trick is to figure out which jockeys are the best!
[Odds]
A Horse's odds are determined by how you and the other "virtual spectators" bet on it and the other
horses. The odds are updated about every 30 seconds.
Put simply, the higher the odds of the horse(s) you bet on, the more money you can make if that horse
wins. Although a horse with very high odds will probably not win the race, there are always exceptions!
Remember that the odds will continue to change right up until the horses run the race. Sometimes it is
good to hold off betting until closer to Post Time.
~MONEY LINE
[Net Worth]
How much "virtual money" you would have after subtracting your Debt from your Cash.
~MAIN MENU LEFT
From the Main Menu, you can select several options:
[Betting Menu]
This option allows you to make bets, and review bets you have already made.
[Faster Post Time Clock]
Doubles the speed of the Post Time Clock (up to a maximum of about a minute per tick) each time you
push the "F" key. Use this carefully, or you could end up with the horses racing before you have a
chance to make any bets!
[Slower Post Time Clock]
Cuts the speed of the Post Time Clock in half (down to a minimum of a second per tick) each time you
push the "S" key.
~MAIN MENU RIGHT
[View Racing Form]
Use this to see how well a particular horse has done in the past, or to see the lineup of future races in this
session.
[Visit the Bank]
If you need more money, you can visit the Bank's Automatic Teller Machine and borrow up to $200 per
day.
[Quit]
If you don't have time to finish this session of races, you can always quit. If you check back in before a
new day begins, you will be able to start right where you left off!
~BETTING INFO
[Go to the Betting Window]
Selecting this option will put you "in line" at the betting window. You will have to wait your turn to place
your bets. Although there may be several people in front of you, you can always speed things along by
speeding up the Post Time Clock.
Once you are at the betting window, you can place as many bets as you like until you run out of money!
Don't wait too long to get in line to place your bets, or you may be shut out when the race begins.
[Review the Bets You've Made]
If you want to see the bets you have already made for this race, you can always check them here.
~BETTING TYPES
[NORMAL BETS]
Although the Win, Place, and Show bets don't normally payoff huge amounts, they are the simplest bets
to understand. When compared with the more exotic bets, they are the easiest to win. A notably easy
bet to win is the "Show" bet where the horse only has to finish third to have a winning bet! Unfortunately,
the "Show" bet usually don't pay very well.
--Win--
One bet on one horse to finish first.
--Place--
One bet on one horse to finish either first or second.
--Show--
One bet on one horse to finish either first, second or third.
--Across the Board--
Three bets on one horse; a Win bet, a Place bet, and a Show bet.
[EXOTIC BETS]
Big money can be made (and lost) betting the more exotic bets! These require you to pick more than one
horse to be in the money, and are therefore difficult to play. These bets are frequently losers, but when
they win, they win big!
--Quinella--
One bet on two horses, which must finish first and second, but either one can finish first, and the other
finish second. This is a popular bet!
--Exacta--
One bet on two horses, which must finish first and second, in the exact order you picked them.
--Trifecta--
One bet on three horses, which must finish first, second and third, in the exact order you picked them.
This combination is very difficult to pick, but can yield payoffs well over $1000 on a $2 bet!
--Daily Double--
One bet on two horses; the winner of the first race, and the winner of the second race. You must make
this bet before the first race begins. To see what the lineup is for the second race, select "View Racing
Form" from the Main Menu, and enter a "2" when prompted for the desired race to view.
~BETTING WHEEL
When you bet the exotic bets, you have the option of making a "Single" bet or a "Wheel" bet.
For example, when betting an Exacta, you could make a "Single" bet on horses 4 and 6. If horse 4
comes in first and horse 6 comes in second you win! A "Wheel" allows you to bet on horse 4 to win, and
then several or all of the other horses to come in second.
For example, if you bet on horse 4 to come in first and then wheeled horses 1,3,5,6 to come in second,
you would actually be making four Exacta bets (4,1 and 4,3 and 4,5 and 4,6). This also raises the total
cost of your bet to the number of combinations you are betting. In this case, if your Base Amount bet was
$100, your total ticket cost would be $400.
When prompted for the second and third horses in your wheel, you can use the word "ALL" as a
shorthand method of entering all other horses, except the one you have picked to come in first.
Otherwise, list the horses you want, and separate them with either commas or spaces (e.g. 1 3 4 6 or
1,3,4,6).
~RACING FORM
The racing form is quite easy to understand, once you get the hang of it. The first race listed is how the
horse performed in it's last race. The next entry is the race before that, and so on. By studying a horses
history, it is possible to make a more intelligent bet.
Knowing which lengths, track conditions, etc., that a particular horse performs best in, is key to knowing
his strengths in future races.
~RACING FORM DATE
Date of the previous race.
~RACING FORM DISTANCE
Distance of the previous race.
~RACING FORM CONDITION
Track condition of the previous race.
D-Dry
N-Normal
R-Raining
M-Muddy
~RACING FORM FINISH
Position the horse finished in the previous race.
~RACING FORM LENGTHS
Lengths the horse finished behind the leader of previous race. "N" means the horse finished a nose
behind the leader. "H" means a head behind the leader. Numbers indicate how many horse lengths
behind the leader the horse finished.
If the horse finished first, then this number tells how many lengths ahead of the second place horse this
horse finished.
~RACING FORM JOCKEY
The jockey that rode this horse in the previous race.
~RACING FORM TOP THREE
The first three finishers of the previous race.
~HORSE EDITOR
Operation of the horse editor is straightforward. [P]revious, [N]ext, [F]irst, and [L]ast allow you to browse
the database.
Select the [S]earch option to locate a specific horse. You do not need to enter the horse's complete
name to locate it. Entering part of the name will take you to the first match containing the search field.
As each horse is entered in a race, the horse database keeps track of it's performance for the last ten
races. [?]Show History toggles on or off the display of this history.
To reset a particular horse so that it has no history, select [!]Delete History. This option also allows you to
delete the history of every horse in the database, so use this function with care!
[D]elete does just that, allowing you to delete the current horse. Use the [E]dit function to change the
characteristics of the currently displayed horse.
Creating a new horse is simple. Select the [A]dd option, and follow the prompts. Random numbers are
automatically generated for each of the horses attributes for your convenience.
Each of the horses attributes can be adjusted from 0 to 100 and play an important part in the horse's
performance. The Speed factor affects the horse's overall speed under all conditions.
The Constitution factor affects whether a horse is likely to be fit to run for that particular race. Horses with
low constitutions could easily be too sick or weak to run well. The Endurance factor affects a horse's
ability to "hang in there" in the longer races.
The Raining, Mud, Normal and Dry factors affect how the horse runs under particular track conditions.
While these factors affect in large part each horses performance, they are not the final determination of
the outcome of a particular race. There is always luck involved!
~PLAYER EDITOR
Operation of the player editor is straightforward. [P]revious, [N]ext, [F]irst, and [L]ast allow you to browse
the database.
Select the [S]earch option to locate a specific player. You do not need to enter the player's complete
name to locate them. Entering part of the name will take you to the first match containing the search field.
[D]elete does just that, allowing you to delete the current player. Use the [E]dit function to alter a player's
Name, Cash On Hand, Total Debt or the date when they Last Played the game.
~NEW WEEK
Each Sunday begins a new week of racing. Your Cash On Hand has been reset to $1000 and your debt
has been wiped out. Be sure to play everyday this week to maximize your winnings!
