  7. Description:
  8. jambient lets you use a joystick (or mouse) to sculpt 
  9. sound in 16 channels simultaneously and move in sonic space.  
  10. Designed to allow live performance of electronica, ambient 
  11. and audio collage style music. Features: instant drag and drop 
  12. loading of wave files; easy volume, pitch, pan, fading and 
  13. cross fading controls; controls for manipulating groups of 
  14. samples; mix volume, pitch, or pan using joystick (or mouse); 
  15. position sounds in sonic space and move around in them using 
  16. joystick (or mouse); set volume, pitch or pan patterns for 
  17. samples. Also has scripting capabilities.

  19. jambientFREE is a freeware version with only 4 channels and 
  20. some other limitations. jambientFREE will not be updated 
  21. beyond version 0.7.30

  23. Installation:
  24. To setup jambient (or jambientFREE), run the self-extracting 
  25. exe to unzip all the files to a temporary directory. Then run 
  26. setup.exe, choosing the directory in which you want to install 
  27. jambient (or jambientFREE). If the setup program needs to 
  28. replace system files that are in use, it will ask you to 
  29. reboot and then to run setup again to complete the 
  30. installation.

  32. **NB: jambientFREE installers obtained from Simtel require 
  33. that you already have Visual Basic 6 runtimes installed, 
  34. available in simvb6-6.zip at Simtel
  35.  
  36. Help:
  37. To get help on a control, drag the question mark in the bottom 
  38. of a window and drop onto the control. Also look for hints in
  39. the status bar.

  41. Requirements:
  42. Sound card; 32 meg ram, Pentium 133 or higher, recommended.

  44. jambient requires that you install DirectX 7.0a 
  45. or above, available at www.microsoft.com/directx. 
  46. It might already be installed; if it is not, 
  47. jambient will tell you.
  48.  
  49. To ensure that your help viewer is up to date,
  50. run hhupd.exe, which is installed in the \Help
  51. subdirectory of jambient.

  53. If you want to run jambient scripts, you need to
  54. install the latest version of Microsoft Scripting 
  55. Engine, available at msdn.microsoft.com/scripting
  56. (click the VBScript item in the menu).
  57. The engine might already be installed on your machine. 
  58. Try running scripts--if you get an error message 
  59. about a missing scripting engine, you need the
  60. download.

  62. Problems? The diagnostic program:
  63. If you run into a problem starting up jambient,
  64. run jamDiag.exe, which is installed in the 
  65. same directory as jambient.exe. It reports on
  66. all required components, and will tell
  67. you if any are missing. jamDiag saves a 
  68. report to jamDiag.txt

  70. Preferences file:
  71. You should probably set up a preferences.jam file
  72. for yourself. This will let you start jambient with 
  73. your preferred settings. See "Saving and Opening" in help
  74. for more on this.
