This file gives a brief overview of tax codes, and
is not exhaustive. Your tax office will have more
information.
The informationis based on 97/8 codes but in general
applies to all years, with figures changing with the
budget etc.
How are codes made up ?
========================
Tax codes are designed to give your employer information
on how to tax your pay without revealing to your employer
private info. about you.
Standard codes are made up of a figure(s) followed by a letter.
eg 300L
The 300 is your tax free allowances. So the higher your number
the more you can earn without paying tax. Your allowances are
divided equally through the year.
The letter following the number has the following meanings
L Single person.
H Married person with additional allowances.
T Usually means your allowances are split between jobs.
P Pensioner
In addition this can be suffixed with wk1/mth1 which means that
the code is non cummulative.
K codes
========
This is made of k followed by a number.
These codes are used to recover tax for benefits received and in
exceptional cases large underpayments from previous years. Any
queries speak to your tax office as the makeup of the number is
very complex.
BR/OT
======
This stands for BASIC RATE, and means that your pay is taxed with no
allowances given. Currently 23%.
D0
==
This means the employer must tax your pay at the Higher rate, again with
no allowances given.
NB the allowances for the two instances may have been used elsewhere ie if
you have more than one job.
NT
==
Means NO TAX. the employer does not have to deduct, but simiarly if you have
had tax deducted before the NT code was issued it cannot be repaid. This code
is fairly rare.
