CALLER DISPLAY SYSTEM
from Octopus Systems
Just imagine: The phone is about to ring. You don’t know it, but your
computer does, so it displays the name and number of the caller, opens
their notes and account records and turns off the audio CD that is
playing in your CDROM drive. It does all of this just before the phone
rings and then speaks the name of the caller, in case you are away from
the screen.
All this is possible using the new Caller Display System from Octopus
Systems. A small Caller Display unit plugs into a standard telephone
socket and passes Caller Display information on to the computer via its
serial port. The Caller Display service is available on most telephone
lines even if you don’t have the 1471 service. It costs just £4 per
quarter from BT and its free with some other telephone companies.
It is ideal for handling sales and support calls where it can display
customer details, addresses, version numbers and notes of previous
conversations before the call is answered. It can also be used to screen
calls, to verify the identity of the caller on private modem lines, or
simply to amaze your friends...
When somebody telephones you the system displays their number in a
window, together with their name if it is in the user database. An
existing database can be imported or new names can be added during the
call. It can also display the caller's area and their location on a
map of the UK.
A specified file or directory can be opened automatically when a call
from a particular number is received. This can be used for telephone
notes allowing you to refer to previous calls, find addresses or make
notes during the new call.
Calls are logged on disc and you can see at a glance how many new calls
have been received if you have been away from the phone.
The software will link with other applications (including Datapower 2 and
Prophet 3) to display the caller’s records and it can speak their name
using suitable speech software (such as Speak or Speech).
The software includes a list of area codes, so even if you don’t know the
caller’s name you can find their location. Where possible it will display
the district as well as the main area. For example, ‘0171-728943’ would
display ‘London (inner), St John’s Wood’.
The computer can search for telephone numbers in the directory and even
dial them. It also works well with BT’s new Ring Back service (it alerts
you with the name of the person you are trying to call when an engaged
number becomes free).
Demonstration
-------------
This demonstration version will let you try out the Caller Display
System and it simulates a telephone call to show you what would happen.
If you have RISC OS 3.60 or earlier you should update your
!System directory, as follows:
If you have a Risc PC or A7000 with RISC OS 3.50 or 3.60:
1. Double-click on !Boot (on your hard disc) and then click on System.
2. Drag !System from the floppy window to the System window as instructed.
If you have an older computer with RISC OS 3.00 or 3.10:
1. Press MENU over a filer window and ensure Options->Newer is ticked.
2. Drag !System from the floppy disc to the directory containing
!System on your hard disc:
Once you have updated System (or if you have RISC OS 3.70) you can
double-click on !CallerID to run the demo.
Note that you can use this demonstration as a useful utility by simply
deleting the DemoScript file inside the application. You can then use
it for storing your personal telephone directory, dialling numbers
and for looking up area codes. It can also be used to find the location
of a person, area code, town or city on the UK map.
Use Acorn's interactive Help program for a full description of the
buttons and menus in the CallerID program.
(Thanks to Frank van de Pol for allowing us to use his FPlay sound
module in this demonstration, and to T Clark for the co-ordinate data).
