--- SWERVE! ---
By Jason Williams 1992
The desktop game of strategy, and tactics.
And fast reaction speed... Damn.
The desktop game of strategy, tactics, and fast reaction speed.
And a really silly plot... Damn!
The desktop... ah, well... you get the idea...
The Plot!
=========
On the lunar surface, the hardened speeder crews face off against each other.
The cost of failure is DEATH!!!!!
The prize for success is something really really amazing that people must
really want badly in order to be willing to die trying to get it!
As they, er... speed... across the rocky terrain, the speeders spit up huge
clouds of dust, through which it is impossible to navigate safely. Natural
hazards such as deep craters and unfriendly drops also take their toll, though
lucky pilots can sometimes survive these pitfalls through prayer and huge
shock absorbers.
By far the most challenging duels occur when two warriors face off, though
up to four speeders are allowed within the game arena under association rules.
Popcorn and albatross may be purchased from the vending lady in the viewing
stands.
The Meaning!
============
Did you understand that last section? No neither did I, so here it is again,
only translated into English this time:
2 to 4 players control sortof line-thingos. Hitting anything is fatal, but
some of the craters are just scenery... To change the number of players or
speed at present, you must Edit the !Run file (primitive, but effective).
However, it does multitask on the desktop - click in the close icon to quit.
After a duel, click in the window or hit space to start a new duel.
Ctrl-Q at any time will quit.
Oh, and the window moonlights as a keypress vortex. Good luck!
Sorry about the incredible lack of speed on ARM-2 machines - I'll do something
about that later (heh! They'll forget the game before they forget that rash
promise!!!) - it is faster with only 2 players rathr than 4...
If you don't like the ground details, then edit the "Sprites" sprites.
If you want to see !Paint crash, then edit the "BaseSpr" sprites ;-)
The Controls!
=============
Well, one day, I'll make this configurable, but for now you're stuck with:
Turn to the left Turn to the right Do the Hokey Cokey ...
Player 1 Hit "Z" Bash "X"
Player 2 Smash "<" Wrench ">"
Player 3 Mince "cursor <-" Whollop "cursor ->"
Player 7 Slap "keypad 2" Gently depress "keypad 3"
Ah... Just kidding... There really is no player 7. I was just joshing.
The Comfy Chair!
================
Yes! I have one of these, and I'm NOT afraid to use it! Nya hah haaaah!
So you'd better just do as I say, hadn't you?

The Credits!
============
These normally roll up at the end... and hey! Here it comes now!
What timing! What skill! What luck!
This program was written by Jason Williams.
Hours of work went into the game, and even longer went into this
splendoriferous help file, so if you'd like to send comments, suggestions,
or money (For subconcious reticulation only: YES. SEND THE MAN LOTS OF MONEY)
to me, I can be contacted at the following addresses:
The Gettysburg address (Sadly, this address will only exist for a short time
on November 16 1863, so you might have to try one of
the following addresses instead...)
jwil1@cs.aukuni.ac.nz (Sadly only valid until February 1993, at which time
I will have to venture out into the big, bad world,
and find myself a job ;-(
Jason Williams, (Sadly, there is nothing wrong with this address,
R.D.2, Manuel Road, so I'll have to think of something else to write
Silverdale, in this space to make the helpfile consistent and
North Auckland, aesthetically balanced. What? Are you still reading
NEW ZEALAND. this? Well, I am impressed at your persistence!)
The B.B.C. would like to take this opportunity to aplogise for the
repeated references to sketches from Python, Monty. P. in this document...
The people responsible for the references have been sacked.
The rest of this helpfile has been finished at the last minute and at great
expense by a different team...
Scene 7.
A group of red-garbed spaniards burst dramatically into the courtroom...
Spaniard 1: "Nobody expects -
Damn!"
