  6. You can use MacSPIRS 2.41 to search all SilverPlatter databases, 
  7. including those containing full-text records.
  8.  
  9. These release notes describe the new features and known bugs 
  10. which may occur when using SilverPlatter's MacSPIRS 2.41.
  11.  
  12. NOTE: While MacSPIRS 2.41 runs under both Macintosh System 7.x 
  13.       and Mac OS 8, it performs optimally under System 7.x. The 
  14.       next version of MacSPIRS (currently in development) will 
  15.       take full advantage of Mac OS 8 functionality.
  16.  
  17. BEFORE INSTALLING MacSPIRS 2.41 we recommend that you:      
  18.  
  19. * Delete the preference files for any previous MacSPIRS 
  20.   installations.      
  21.  
  22. * Shut down any other applications you may have running. The 
  23.   MacSPIRS Installer automatically restarts your Macintosh 
  24.   after installation is complete.

  54. The following features are new in MacSPIRS 2.41. For more 
  55. detailed information about these features, see the 
  56. "Differences from MacSPIRS 2.3 to MacSPIRS 2.4" document 
  57. available from SilverPlatter's FTP site.

  59. * Memory Requirements:
  60.   --------------------
  61.   MacSPIRS 2.41 requires of minimum of 4MB of RAM to 
  62.   run. 8MB or more is recommended.
  63.        
  64. * Installation and Configuration Options:
  65.   ---------------------------------------
  66.   > You can now install MacSPIRS as a platform-specific 
  67.     application, allowing it run more efficiently on a 68K 
  68.     or PowerPC machine. If you are installing or modifying 
  69.     a MacSPIRS ERL client, you can specify the servers you 
  70.     want to access and preconfigure usernames and passwords 
  71.     for automatic server login.
  72.  
  73.   > By default, the Minimum and Preferred Memory Requirements 
  74.     for MacSPIRS are 2MB and 4MB, respectively. These memory 
  75.     settings are listed in the MacSPIRS 2.41 Info dialog box. 
  76.     You can increase the amount of Preferred memory to as much 
  77.     as 12MB or reduce it to as little as 2.5MB. 
  78.  
  79.     NOTE: Reducing the amount of Preferred memory is recommended 
  80.           if you are running MacSPIRS on a machine with 4 MB RAM 
  81.           and experience system crashes when selecting databases.
  82.  
  83.   > You can configure MacSPIRS to replace partially-typed search
  84.     terms with words from the Index.
  85.  
  86.   > By default, MacSPIRS searches the ERL server(s) during 
  87.     each login or system restart and displays any Message of 
  88.     the Day (MOTD) posted by the ERL administrator. To turn off 
  89.     the MOTD feature, go to the [MAC] section in the MacSPIRS.INI 
  90.     file (located in the MacSPIRS Overrides folder within the 
  91.     System folder) and change the NoMOTD setting from 0 (default) 
  92.     to 1 as shown below:
  93.     [MAC]
  94.     NoMOTD=1
  95.  
  96.   > Because some MacSPIRS features are not yet available for full 
  97.     text, MacSPIRS displays a warning message each time it 
  98.     encounters a full text database. To turn off this warning 
  99.     message, go to the [MAC] section in the MacSPIRS.INI file and 
  100.     change the 
  101.     NoFTWarning setting from 0 (default) to 1 as shown below:

  105. * ISO Latin 1 Font Support:
  106.   -------------------------
  107.   MacSPIRS 2.41 includes the ISO Latin font needed to display 
  108.   ISO Latin 1 databases correctly. You must install this font
  109.   manually after the MacSPIRS installation is complete.
  110.  
  111.   To install the ISO Latin 1 font:
  112.  
  113.      1. Open the following MacSPIRS folders:
  114.   
  115.         MacSPIRS 2.41 Installer : Extras : ProFont Distribution 
  116.         2.0 : ProFontISOLatin1 2.0 F 
  117.  
  118.      2. Drag the ProFontISOLatin1 font suitcase from the 
  119.         ProFontISOLatin1 2.0 F folder to the Fonts folder within 
  120.         your Macintosh's System folder.
  121.  
  122.      3. Restart MacSPIRS to recognize the new font.  
  123.  
  124. * ERL Client Features:
  125.   --------------------
  126.   MacSPIRS 2.41 now supports DES encrypted passwords and 
  127.   Message of the Day.
  128.  
  129. * Interface Preferences:
  130.   ----------------------
  131.   MacSPIRS 2.41 allows you to set certain interface 
  132.   preferences, including the color of various display 
  133.   elements, font and font size, and window positions. 
  134.  
  135. * Lateral Searching:
  136.   ------------------
  137.   A new Lateral Search menu item and Search button make it 
  138.   easier to search from retrieved records.
  139.  
  140. * Record Sorting:
  141.   ---------------
  142.   MacSPIRS 2.41 lets you sort up to 1,000 retrieved records in 
  143.   ascending or descending order.
  144.  
  145. * Navigation Options:
  146.   -------------------
  147.   New menu items make it easier to scroll through retrieved 
  148.   records. 
  149.  
  150. * Search Histories:
  151.   -----------------
  152.   In addition to saving and running search histories, you can 
  153.   edit any search history file, including its description, 
  154.   startup database(s), or the search requests themselves.

  161. * Search Histories:
  162.   -----------------
  163.   > Editing the description of a saved search history 
  164.     (through the Saved Search History dialog box) may 
  165.     prevent the search history from running successfully 
  166.     on certain platforms. 
  167.  
  168.   > Adding implicit referback statements 
  169.     (e.g., "and search_term") to a search history through 
  170.     the Edit Searches dialog box may prevent the search 
  171.     history from running successfully.
  172.  
  173. * Two Help Menus Under Mac OS 8:
  174.   ------------------------------
  175.   When running under Mac OS 8, MacSPIRS 2.41 displays two 
  176.   Help menus in its menu bar. The first Help menu provides 
  177.   MacSPIRS help; the second provides help on the Mac OS 8 
  178.   operating system.
