Subject: Adaptec cards problems in file servers
with more than 16MB RAM
Keywords: Adaptec, 1540B (ISA) cards, EISA bus
machines, 1640 (MCA) cards,
Affected Product: Network Archivist NLM Version 2.0f
Symptom
Palindrome has recently identified problems involving Adaptec
cards in fileservers having more than 16 Megabytes of RAM. The
problem is caused by Adaptec's implementation of their driver
software. The solution to the problem is detailed below.
The problem affects Adaptec's 1540B (ISA) and 1640 (MCA) cards.
Both use 24-bit addressing, which forces DMA data transfers
within the lower 16 Megabytes of RAM. The AHA1x40.DSK driver
program does not compensate for this.
Solution
HAK-1540B-A16
Use in ISA bus machines and in EISA bus machines with up to 16
Megabytes of RAM. NOT FOR USE IN EISA MACHINES ABOVE 16
MEGABYTES. Use HAK-1740-E16 in these cases.
If you are a 1540 user experiencing the problem, contact your
reseller about obtaining a 1740 card.
HAK-1640-M16
Use in MCA machines with up to 16 Megabytes of RAM. NOT FOR USE
ABOVE 16 MEGABYTES. We recommend BusLogic model 640A for this
use.
If you are a 1640 user, contact Palindrome Technical Support
about alternative cards and the appropriate driver software.
