CHRISTOPHER ROBIN ZIMMERMAN: Everyone loves the submission match, but Bret
Hart's return to the WWF started with a BETTER match with Steve Austin at
the '96 Survivor Series. Alas, we've all forgotten how great that match was
- along with the superb call of Ross and McMahon (yes, that's right). And I
think it was the SuperBrawl trios match that proved once and for all that
American fans COULD enjoy a Lucha-style match on an American TV show - even
if Ciclope was in it. (Even better, I got to see it live at the Cow Palace!)
RICK SCAIA: Anybody who votes anything other than the Hell in the Cell
match between Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker as Match of the Year gets my
vote for Clueless Putz of the Year. No other match in a LONG time (much
less during the last 12 months) has combined such incredible work, with such
high drama, and tossed in PPV main event status to boot.
LOKI: Hell in the Cell (Shawn Michaels versus the Undertaker) was in my
opinion the best match of the year. I enjoyed the innovation of leaving the
cell and continuing the match on the roof. When the Undertaker had Michaels
above his head on the roof of that cage, the shear thought of tossing him
off was thrilling. Then the eventual fall of Michaels off the cage and
through the table was great. Anyone who was willing to do this in a match
is truely awesome. The blood that dripped down Michaels, that left stitches
the next night gave the feeling that both wanted to win the match really
bad. Although some would argue Kane's arrival ruined the match, I would say
it added to the match. What a way to debut, tearing the door off the cage
and then going in to confront and beat up the Undertaker.
TOM SERVO 30: I had to vote for the fabulous 8 man lucha match from EMLL
(even though it was hell trying to write that up on the ballot). Anyone who
has any interest in Lucha Libre, I encourage you to find a tape of this
match.
IRIS POSTLER: I was astonished that neiter Bulldog nor Owen cheated in that
match (well, Owen a little bit). I also liked Owen's speech afterwards. And,
of course, the match happened in Germany :)
JOSHUA HOLMES: Misawa/Kobashi went 42 mintues, only 25 or so that was put
on TV. It was still one of the greatest matches I had ever seen, and it
make me a AJPW fan for life. What incredible build-up. Eddy/Rey showed the
world what luchadores do with TIME TO WRESTLE. Geez, Bischoff, take a hint.
DBS/Owen was simply fantastic.
MIKE SWEETSER: Notice something about my picks? The first two involve Eddy
Guerrero. There's a REASON for that. :) I've waited all year to vote for
Davey Boy vs. Owen, and I finally get my chance. Woohoo!
JOSEPH COLLINS: Bret & Austin's WrestleMania bout featured the perfect mix
of intense brawling, scientific wrestling, crazy bumps, and scripted drama
unlike any other bout this year. The heat & fan response was incredible, and
it was the performance that saved WrestleMania XIII (which until that match
had looked like a bad In Your House). Davey Boy & Owen had the best match
of the Monday Night Wars to date, and could have headlined a ppv with this
bout. The Shawn/Steve matchup at KotR was just good wrestling (but a bad
ending).
DEAN !: El Samurai vs Koji Kanemoto is the embodimentof why I love
professional wrestling- heat, stiffness, intensity, grit, courage, drama,
surliness, stoicism. The EMLL 16-man Cibernetico match was the embodiment of
all that is good in Lucha Libre- grace, beauty, tradition, speed, drama,
