  3. Mercutio never fails to impress us with the quickness of his
  4. wit. He is always lively and energetic by nature.
  5.  
  6. His vivid imagination is demonstrated by the long tale he spins
  7. about the fictitious Queen Mab in Act I scene iv.
  8. His real purpose in this speech seems to be to coax Romeo back
  9. into a good humour showing that he is a loyal friend.

  11. Indeed when Romeo does recover his good nature in Act II
  12. scene iv Mercutio is the first to rejoice.
  13.  
  14. As well as enjoying puns and wordplay Mercutio also delights
  15. in rather bawdy jokes.

  17. This is well demonstrated in Act II scene i when he conjures
  18. Romeo by Rosaline's :
  19. straight leg and quivering thigh
  20. And the demesnes that there adjacent lie.
  21. And also when he teases the Nurse in Act II scene iv.

  23. However Mercutio's exuberant nature also leads him to be
  24. rather hot-tempered.
  25. He cannot abide what he sees as Romeo's cowardice towards
  26. Tybalt and so he takes over the quarrel on Romeo's behalf
  27. and is killed by Tybalt.

  29. The manner of his death makes him even more to be admired.

  31. Although he is fatally wounded he makes light of his injury.
  32. He obviously knows that he is dying but he says:
  33. Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.
  34.  
  35. Perhaps our final word on him should be not that he is a
  36. 'grave' man but indeed a brave one.
