  3. Boxer is the most likeable character on Animal Farm. An
  4. enormous carthorse he is very strong although 'not of
  5. first-rate intelligence.

  7. Boxer is very industrious and in times of difficulty takes
  8. the slogan of:

  10. I will work harder.

  12. At times it seems as if Animal Farm will collapse and it is
  13. only kept going by Boxer's determination and strength.

  15. One function of Boxer's character in the book is to serve as a
  16. contrast to the lazy exploitative pigs.
  17.     
  18. It is tragic that Boxer remains fiercely loyal to Napoleon who
  19. callously sends him to his death once his usefulness is gone.

  21. Orwell cleverly builds up the character of Boxer as gentle
  22. humble thoughtful and self-sacrificing so that his ultimate
  23. betrayal inspires in the reader anger and disgust against the
  24. pigs and Napoleon in particular.

  26. In human terms Boxer represents the ordinary working man.
  27. Orwell reveals his respect and admiration for the working-
  28. class and perhaps also frustration that a group with so much
  29. potential allow themselves to be 'used' by those in power.

  31. Ultimately Boxer is too trusting for his own good.
