When in the 18th century it was forbidden to establish glassworks in Denmark due to lack of forest resources, the industry started to concentrate in Norway which was part of the Danish Realm. Indeed, a number of important glassworks were erected to southern Norway from the 1740s onwards. The first glasshouse was founded to N├╢stetangen in 1741, and it was soon followed by several other factories. In addition to window glass and bottles, especially fine tableware of clear glass was produced in Norway for the Danish market.
