Denmark’s first glassworks was built in Jutland, to Visborg of Glaargård, around 1550. The King and the high nobility soon founded other factories to North Jutland and the province of Scania (Skåne), which in those days was part of Denmark (now in Sweden). These forest glass factories produced window glass and for instance Passgläser and Keulengläser (club-shaped beakers), some also produced objects of Venetian style. Because Denmark only had few forests, it limited the glass industry. The tradition from Renaissance broke in 1569 when the Swedes destroyed the last glasshouse, situated in Copenhagen. Only as late as 1825 glassmaking in the country was restarted with the founding of Holmgård glassworks.
