Finland’s oldest glassworks was built in 1681 when Gustaf Jung moved the factory he had inherited from his father to Uusikaupunki. Jung changed the location of his works because a competing business had been founded in Stockholm, called Nya glasbruket (‘New Glassworks’ — later known as Kungsholmen). In Uusi-kaupunki small amounts of facon de Venise glass was produced. The history of the glassworks was short-lived, though, because the glass-house burned down in 1685. The glass industry became properly rooted in Finland when the glassworks of Åvik was founded in 1748 in Somero. At the end of the 18th century already nearly half of the glassworks of the Sweden were situated in the forested areas of Finland.
