The earliest glasshouse in Sweden that we have written information of was situated in Vadstena in the 15th century. It was used for blowing window glass for the needs of a convent. The production of tableware glass did not start until King Gustavus Vasa invited the Italian Anders Glasmakare to Stockholm in the 1550s. Glassworks were founded from the end of the 16th century onwards mainly for the needs of the court and the high nobility, first to the lake Mälar region. In the early glasshouses, blowers mostly made forest glass. The production of facon de Venise glass was not stabilised until the 1640s when Melchior Jung founded a glassworks in Stockholm.
