During the Middle Ages the wine was a very important merchandise because it was used at communions in all the parishes of Europe. This is a reason for relatively early import of wine to the Northernmost Europe although it was difficult to transport without being disturbed. Wine was expensive but the wealthy could still afford to enjoy of this luxury of far south. Most liked wines were sweet, stark and spiced blends. We know that e.g. Claret-wine was prepared by mixing saffron, cinnamon, ginger and honey in white wine after which it was layed down for two days. Then egg white was added and the drink was shaked and strained before served.
