  4. This document provides information about the use of the 
  5. Microsoft (r) Year 2000 Product Analyzer for Administrators. 
  6. To view this file online in Microsoft Notepad, maximize the

  24. The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer for Administrators tool (Y2kadmin.exe) performs
  25. the following tasks simultaneously on multiple machines across multiple networks:  
  26.  - Identifies installed software products on specified machines by 
  27.    scanning the drives found on those machines for executable files
  28.  - Compares the resulting list of products to the products listed 
  29.    in a compliance database
  30.  - Generates a report of the compliance levels of the products it 
  31.    discovers, based on the information in the compliance database
  32.  
  33. A Microsoft products compliance database is supplied with the Microsoft Year 2000 Product 
  34. Analyzer for Administrators. 
  35.  
  36. Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer for Administrators is similar to the Microsoft Year
  37. 200 Product Analyzer tool (Y2kscan.exe), which scans only the user's local machine.  Y2KAdmin
  38. presents the user with a graphical interface consisting of essentially the same wizard, the 
  39. notable difference being the "Scan Computers on the Network" page, in place of the "Select 
  40. Drives to Scan" page. There is also a "Simultaneous Scan" slider on the "Progress" page, 
  41. which allows the user to control the number of concurrent scans. The default is 5 scans, 
  42. and the maximum is 20.

  44. Definitions
  45. ===========
  46. In the following text, the phrase "local machine" is used to refer to the machine upon which
  47. the Y2KAdmin tool is being run.  The phrase "local domain" is used to refer to the
  48. domain on which the Local machine is located.

  50. Restrictions
  51. ============
  52. 1)  The user of this tool must have Administrator privileges on the machine to be scanned.
  53. 2)  The tool is only able to list computers from domains that are trusted by the local domain.
  54. 3)  The tool is only able to scan computers running the Microsoft NT operating system. The 
  55.     following workarounds are suggested for scanning Windows 95/98 computers:
  56.     a)    Email the Y2KScan tool to the user with instructions on its use.
  57.         Instruct the user to email the results back to you.
  58.     b)    Construct a web site containing a link to the Y2KScan tool.  Embed the
  59.         usage instructions on the web page.
  60.     c)    Provide users with a shortcut to the y2kscn32.exe tool which is 
  61.         configured on the command line.  See the documentation for this tool
  62.         for details.

  64. Using the "Scan Computers On the Network" Page
  65. ==============================================
  66. Controls
  67. --------
  68.     "Domains" List
  69.         Lists the domains that are trusted by the domain that the local machine is on.

  72.         Lists the computers which are on the domain selected in the "Domains" List.

  75.         Lists the computers which have been selected for scanning.

  78.         When clicked, any computer selected in the "Computers" list is removed and added 
  79.         to the "Selected computers" list.

  81.     "Add All" Button
  82.         When clicked, all computers in the "Computers" list are removed and added to the
  83.         "Selected Computers" list.
  84.  
  85.     "Remove" Button
  86.         When clicked, any computer selected in the "Selected computers" list is removed
  87.         and added to the "Computers" list.
  88.     
  89.     "Remove All" Button
  90.         When clicked, all computers in the "Selected computers" list are removed, and 
  91.         added to the "Computers" list.

  93.     "Back" Button
  94.         When clicked, returns to the "Select Wizard Options" page.

  96.     "Next" Button
  97.         When clicked, continues to the "Confirm Settings" page of the wizard if "Default"
  98.         was chosen (On the "Select Wizard Options" page).

  100.         When clicked, continues to the "Specify Database to Use" page of the wizard, if 
  101.         "Custom" was chosen (On the "Select Wizard Options" page).

  103. Hotkeys
  104. -------
  105.     "Delete" key
  106.         The delete key serves the same function as the "Remove" button.
  107.  
  108.     "Enter" key
  109.         The enter key typically serves the same action as the "Next" button.
  110.         However, if an item is selected in the "Computers" list, pressing
  111.         the enter key will perform the same function as the "Add" button.
  112.         Pressing the enter key again will cause the "Next" button to be
  113.         engaged.

  117. Initialization
  118. --------------
  119. When the page is first displayed, several seconds will pass while the following occur:
  120.  
  121.     The tool scans for domains:
  122.         - A remote domain scan is performed.
  123.         - After the scan is complete, the "Domains" list will be filled with
  124.           the names of trusted domains discovered during the scan.
  125.         - The name of the local domain will be added to the "Domains" list.
  126.         - The name of the local domain will be selected in the "Domains" list.
  127.     This remote domain scan only occurs the first time the page is displayed.

  129.     The tool scans for machines:
  130.         - The local domain is scanned for machines running the Microsoft NT operating
  131.           system.
  132.         - The "Computers" list will be filled with the names of computers found
  133.            on the local domain that are running Microsoft Windows NT.
  134.     Again, this local domain scan only occurs the first time the page is displayed.

  136. Considerations
  137. --------------    
  138. Once the page has completed its initialization, it is ready to use. There are several
  139. things to note at this point:
  140.  
  141.     - Only domains that are trusted by the local domain are displayed in the "Domains" list.
  142.     - The user may not be an administrator on some of the domains listed in the "Domains" list.
  143.     - There may be computers listed in the "Computers" list that the user may not be able 
  144.       to scan Due to network deficiencies or improper access rights.

  152. transition to the year 2000. Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer

  154. date-handling behavior of the Microsoft products that have been 
  155. tested for Year 2000 compliance, and it is subject to change at

  159. the exclusive means of inventorying computers when 
  160. conducting your Year 2000 compliance assessment.

  162. The information in any report created by the Microsoft Year 2000 
  163. Product Analyzer is dependent upon the availability, accuracy, and 
  164. current nature of the year 2000 compliance information used in 
  165. generating the report. The compliance ratings identified in the 
  166. report are subject to change from time to time without notice. 
  167. Therefore, Microsoft recommends that you check the Microsoft Year 
  168. 2000 Web site, located at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/year2k, 
  169. to ensure that you have the most current information. The 
  170. compliance ratings contained herein might require you to install
