│ 1. SDN INTERNATIONAL(sm) └──────────────────────────────────────────
SDN International is Fidonet's Shareware Distribution Network. The
author-direct pipeline of shareware programs distributed automatically to
hundreds of participating bulletin boards in Fidonet compatible networks
world wide. Distributed shareware is posted for downloading and further
distribution. In this way programs are posted for the author, around the
world.
Shareware authors, because of their contribution to BBS'ing and
computing, deserved some recognition, a forum to present their programs
from. Sysops who register as official SDN sites and participate in the
SDN activity encourage user registration and present shareware in a
mature and secure manner.
Distribution methods use by SDN include:
- Automatic netmail network transfers for the Fidonet
community. This is the major means of distribution.
- Satellite Downlink through SkyLink Communications in
areas of the United States and Canada.
- Gateway to other IFDC distribution networks in Fidonet.
- Occasional cooperation with major online services.
- And contemplated is an authorized CD-ROM designed for
bulletin board use.
SDN International is a founding member of the International File
Distribution Cooperative (IFDC). As such we are in cooperation with
other distribution networks in Fidonet. SDN is not only it's own
distribution service (SDNet) but is also a gateway for authors-direct
shareware to other IFDC distribution networks as well. Your program, if
better served by speciality distribution in one of the other IFDC
networks, will be processed and sealed as author-direct and forwared to
that services for distribution. In this way SDN is not only it's own
speciality distribution service but a gateway for authors and an clearing
house for other Fidonet speciality distribution services. The author
only need contact SDN for distribution and other File Distribution
Networks need only to link to SDN for author-direct assurance.
Fidonet is a vast world of 21,000 plus bulletin boards and the thousands
and thousands of users connected through them. In 1991 it had been
estimated, at a bare minimum, that SDN files are available for 160,000
users, since then, to be honest, we have been overwhelmed with growth and
simply can not keep track. As SDN sites have multiplied, SDN files make
their way to many major online services and are avalible through Internet
sites.. the real count is anyones guess. Through the IFDC gateway SDN
offers.. The SDN Project is without a doubt the most far reaching and
free source of shareware distribution. Period.
╒═════════════════╕
│ 2. USER OSMOSIS └───────────────────────────────────────────────────
This method of distribution is done by everyday BBS users. Before SDN,
authors and sysops relied upon distribution by user osmosis. Programs
old and new are downloaded haphazard from BBS' and online services, and
then uploaded to other BBS' or online service. As a method of
distribution for your program.. this is weakest and most open to risk.
Spotty and chaotic distribution results. Once your files become
corrupted by careless or malicious users ... your program is then
uploaded and sent on it's way to be multiplied in this form over and over
every time it is downloaded and uploaded again elsewhere. Files may be
missing, configurations options may have been set, information changed
and perhaps it may have been hacked and sent to do it's virus or Trojan
damage under the guise of your name and reputation.
╒════════════════════════╕
│ 3. SDNET SYSOP MEMBERS └────────────────────────────────────────────
SDN's distributions are all author-direct, organized and protected by
sealed security. SDN has it's own registered member sysops who are
dedicated to author, sysop and user cooperation in shareware. Through
SDNet distribution, we offer seeding of your programs to our own managed
distribution sites. Within a short time after release through us, it is
posted at hundreds of hobby BBS sites across North America, Canada,
Europe, Puerto Rico, Australia and many more countries.
Shareware files released trough SDNet are posted at SDN sites in special
file areas with contents and condition of files exactly as authors desire
for their product. The full flavor and concept of SDNet's cooperation
with shareware authors is available from SDNet registered sites. Among
these sites the SDN_PUBLIC, SHAREWRE and ASP Echo E-mail conference are
recommended, the SDN_SYSOP conference is required for all sysops for
efficient managment of SDNet affairs and quick resolution of networking
problems.
As each SDNet site is a distribution point, our distributions reach
hundreds of other non-SDN bulletin boards, SDN files are prized by all.
Wide distribution should do its part to increase your registration rate.
It's simple. Increase the number of people who can download and try your
program and registrations should increase in proportion. Increase the
odds that your programs get to users in complete and uncorrupted form,
and registration should increase also. Downloading users need not be
frustrated by old versions or user corrupted files. No one can guarantee
registrations, but SDN can help you reach your potential.
╒══════════════════════════╕
│ 4. AUTHOR MEMBER SUPPORT └──────────────────────────────────────────
For us to have accomplish this step forward in distribution requires many
phone calls, linking distribution sites, managing affairs and organizing
authors. The SDN Project and participating sysops members pay the costs
for phone links out of a dedication to the hobby spirit, the shareware
concept and public service. SDN is a voluntary cooperation.
Our policy is to be gratis, a service provided for at no charge. There
is no fee, charge or commission to anyone for SDN's Fidonet distribution
services. For authors to duplicate our service they would spend hundreds
of dollars in long distance upload time. SDN can not accept payment for
services ... but we do accept support from authors who stand to benefit
from SDN distribution.
At the founding of SDN, authors themselves suggested support as $35.00.
This, in most cases, is less than one shareware registration which SDN
distribution should provide for authors a few times over. Support
received helps pay for The SDN Project's costs to organize, manage,
process and support such a vast effort.
To those authors who have supported us and made growth possible, thank
you, you are what `user supported' is all about. Authors who have used
us for distribution but have not yet supported us, consider it next time.
If you decide on support, please consider mailing a support check along
with your disk.
Make payable to: SDN International

│ 5. SUBMITTING YOUR PROGRAM └────────────────────────────────────────
The best way to get into SDN distribution is just to mail me your program
disks.
- Disks should be mailed with a professionally printed label
if available.
- Any size disk will do (360k, 1.2k, 1.4k) but If your
program is large then split it up on several disks with
each disk containing 360k or less of files. We will
compress each disk into a set of files for downloading.
- Do not pack multiple programs on one disk, unless you want
to form a 'package' release.
- Do not compress. Programs are compressed here at The
Project with ARJ and a special SDNSeal security applied.
Exception made when your install program requires
compressed files.
- Each program must be accompanied by a signed program form
(PROGRAM.FRM of this kit).
- Include the SDA as described below.
Submissions should not be crippled, demos or other non-productive items.
SDN recommends you to follow the guidelines set forth by the Association
of Shareware Professionals regarding what the users experience of your
shareware should be.
At The Project we scan with a variety of scanners, including cooperation
with Central Point Software, for any virus that might have sneaked by
you. Then your program files are compressed into one downloadable file.
If your program is large, a set of similar named downloadable files are
created. An exclusive and unique compression security (SDNSeal by
Pacesoft) is appended each downloadable file, a tamper proof seal that
can be verified by receiving sysops and users. The downloadable file
then receive the respected .SDN extension.

│ 5. SUBMITTING YOUR PROGRAM └────────────────────────────────────────
╒══════════════════════════╕
│ 5.1. THE SDA DESCRIPTION └───────────────────────────────────────────
On the disk you send us with your program files, you must include a short
ASCII text description file, called an SDA. It is a pure ASCII text file
description of your program. The header contains information that we
need to properly process your program. SDN's file distribution network
is automated, for the amount we distribute, it has to be.
After processing, the SDA is sent as a companion to the .SDN, posted with
it and read online by users who are deciding what to download. The first
few lines of the SDA are formatted for a variety of processing
information and uses. All lines in the .SDA must be left justified.
Here is an example of the first few lines of the SDA (also refer to
SAMPLE.SDA included with this kit).
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│X-Menu 2.1 fast GUI menu system Registration $ 50.00│
│SDN_UTIL JAN93 MENU SYSTEM HARD DISK MANAGEMENT <ASP> │
│FILES: xmenu21.sdn │
│ │
│Author: X-Software Inc. │
│ │
│A great menu system for the advanced user who needs a way to navigate │
│one or more large hard disks. X-Menu is programmable through the use of│
│scripts ... etc... etc...
│
The FIRST line has your program name and version, short description which
must not exceed 50 chars, and the registration amount placed to the
right.
The SECOND line starts with the category of your program (refer to
CATEGORY.LST). The distribution month and year (the first three
characters of the month and the last two digits of the year), and
other 'search' keywords that may sometimes be used by other some
BBS online Door utilities. Authors who are members of the
Association of Shareware Professionals should use the <ASP> flag on
this line as a keyword.
The THIRD line tells the name of the downloadable file(s) your program
consist of. We reserve the right to name the final compressed and
downloadable file according to BBS standards.
Skip one blank line and give your name as author.
The rest of the SDA is a description of your program and it's features,
similar to most authors introduction in their documentation. Parts of
your documentation introduction may be used for this.
Please see EXAMPLE.SDA for an example.
After making your SDA, name it whatever you will but you must give it an
xxxxxxx.SDA extension. If your mailing, place it with your program files
on the disk. If your are uploading (verified authors only) place it
inside the compressed file with your program files. If your program is
large and will need to be broken into a set of disks or downloadable
files, place it with the first disk of the set.
If mailing, print out the PROGRAM.FRM, fill it in, slip it into a disk
mailer along with your program disk.
After your mailing in your first disk and Program Form, you may be
validated for uploading at high speeds directly to The SDN Project BBS
for processing. Please enclose a self addressed, stamped envelope
anytime you mail to us.
Stuff it all into a safe mailer and mail it all out to us. Here is the
SDN Project's mailing address.

│ 6. SDN VIA SATELLITE └──────────────────────────────────────────────
Beginning February 1993 SDN distribution is also available to Fidonet
Sysops and others via Skylink Communications. Through this service SDN
distributed files can be downlinked from satellite to properly equipped
computers and poster online for user downloading. At this time
distribution by this method is only available in the US and Canada. A
new frontier in communications.. a new pipeline of shareware
distribution.
╒══════════════════════╕
│ 7. SHAREWARE SUCCESS └──────────────────────────────────────────────
You, as an author of shareware or user-supported programs, loose NOTHING
by joining our efforts. Sysops, users, SDN and you, can only gain. Your
only loss would be not to consider joining this international cooperative
effort. The big names of shareware use SDN, and because it's free, you
should too!
╒═════════════╕
│ 8. APPENDIX └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
* Printed copy of this Author-Kit is available from the SDN Project for
shipping cost of $5.00 and a large stamped self addressed envelope.
* Authors that are members of the ASP should consult the ASP's HUB NETWORK
Submission package (ANNSUB.ZIP) or contact Richard Holler.
* DO NOT send me complimentary disks of registered software for my personal
use. It is nice of you, but is too easily mistaken for programs for
distribution and might be accidentally be sent world wide for
distribution!
* Programs forwarded to other IFDC networks have your SDA renamed to
IFDC----.ID and included inside the archive. The archive is sealed with
SDNSeal as author-direct and it is given the extension of the achiever
used (example .ARJ). Distribution is according to the criteria and
policy of that network.
