  21.         NAMCLEAN is a PAF utility to remove unused names from your PAF
  22.         NAME2.DAT file which result from the deletion of records that once
  23.         referred to them or the correction of spelling errors.  It is easy
  24.         to use and requires only normal precautions to  protect your files
  25.         from damage during the process.  A good current backup should
  26.         always be made  prior to modification by any software that changes
  27.         or writes to your database.  The files  that require backups are
  28.         NAME2.DAT, INDIV2.DAT, and MARR2.DAT.  To speed up the processing,
  29.         copy these files to a ram disk or hard disk before running
  30.         NAMCLEAN and that back to their normal location after the program
  31.         is complete.  The other files in  your database are not updated.

  33.         Run FRCHK on your original files prior to running NAMCLEAN.  If
  34.         FRCHK  reports problems, then attempt to correct them prior to
  35.         running NAMCLEAN.  If you have the  10 June 1990 or later update
  36.         to PAF 2.2, you can run FRCHK -f.  This will repair most  minor
  37.         problems.  The results of NAMCLEAN are unpredictable if your data
  38.         fails the FRCHK.

  40.         Processing time for NAMCLEAN is much faster than using GEDCOM
  41.         procedures to clean up the NAME2.DAT file.  NAMCLEAN used in
  42.         conjunction with RECLAIM processed a database of 5400 INDIV2.DAT,
  43.         2113 MARR2.DAT, and 3600 NAME2.DAT records in about 50 minutes on
  44.         an 8mhz AT.  Doing the same reorganization with GEDCOM took over
  45.         3 1/2 hours to complete.  Processing time is dependent upon the
  46.         number of name field entries in your  INDIV2.DAT and MARR2.DAT
  47.         files.  NAMCLEAN does not modify any RIN or MRIN numbers.
