  17.        As an avid family history researcher and PAF user, I recently
  18.        started looking around to see what utilities might be available to
  19.        work with, or enhance, PAF's capabilities.  I looked first on my
  20.        favorite local BBS, Hackers Haven, normally one of the best places
  21.        in the state to look for files.  A couple of PAF related utilities
  22.        were there, although they were quite old.  Next came Channel 1 and
  23.        Exec-PC, two of the largest BBSes in the country, where I found a
  24.        few more of these utilities.  Again most of them were older.  I then
  25.        checked in CompuServe's Genealogy Forum.  I found more programs,
  26.        including some that were very recent.  After more searching, I
  27.        located several bulletin boards that focus on genealogy and found
  28.        even more PAF utilities.  By the time I was done, I had located more
  29.        than 50 programs!

  31.        PAF is a very popular program for use by family historians.  It
  32.        surprised me to find that shareware for PAF was not more readily
  33.        available.  During my review I encountered another problem.  I found
  34.        it very difficult to determine which was the latest version of each
  35.        program and to locate current copies.

  37.        I have decided to share the information I've gathered to save others
  38.        the same time and expense.   I hope this will help make these
  39.        programs more widely available and encourage present and potential
  40.        shareware/freeware authors to continue their development of high
  41.        quality utilities for PAF users.  I hope eventually to include all
  42.        such programs which are compatible with the latest version of PAF
  43.        (2.2).   This first version of PAF Review does not include programs
  44.        whose sole purpose is to transport data between PAF and an alternate
  45.        genealogy program.  I have explicitly excluded programs that are
  46.        commercial only.

  51.        Any original material contained in PAF Review which is not quoted
  52.        from others is copyright 1993 by Mike St. Clair.  I grant permission
  53.        to upload copies of PAF Review to BBSes or other information
  54.        providers for redistribution and use by individuals and nonprofit
  55.        organizations.  I prohibit the charging of any fee specifically for
  56.        PAF Review.  BBSes may provide copies of PAF Review for downloading
  57.        by users and may post portions as public bulletins.  Users groups
  58.        may include portions in their newsletters.  Private individuals and
  59.        nonprofit organizations may use this material for their own purposes
  60.        unless intended to generate income.  All other rights are reserved.

  66.        I plan to issue a new version of PAF Review roughly once a month if 
  67.        any new utilities or releases have appeared.  The name of the file
  68.        will be PAFRV followed by a year in the format YY and an issue
  69.        character.  This character will begin with "1", increment until it
  70.        reaches "9", then start through the alphabet beginning with "A" if
  71.        necessary.  For example the first version in 1993 is 93.1 with a
  72.        file name of PAFRV931.ZIP.  The file extension may also be LZH, ARC,
  73.        etc., depending on the standards and policies of the BBS where you
  74.        find the file.  On CompuServe, which limits file names to six
  75.        characters, the filename will always be PAFRV.ZIP omitting the
  76.        date/version from the name.

  81.        The following files are included in PAF Review:

  83.          PAFRV.DES    Describes the purpose of PAF Review and tells how
  84.                       you can help keep it up to date. (4 pages)

  86.          PAFRV.SUM    This contains a brief summary of all known PAF
  87.                       related utilities including its name, most recent
  88.                       version, the versions date and approximate size for
  89.                       downloading, whether it is shareware or freeware,
  90.                       the requested registration fee, the author and a
  91.                       description of no more than two lines.  This version
  92.                       includes descriptions of 48 programs. (6 pages)
  93.  
  94.          XXXXXXXX.INF There will be one of these files for each program
  95.                       described in PAFRV.SUM.  Each will be no more than
  96.                       one printed page and will describe the program in
  97.                       more detail including the file name by which it will
  98.                       normally be found and the author's address if known. 
  99.                       In a future release, I plan to  add some brief
  100.                       information about what is new in the most recent
  101.                       version of each program. (1 page each)

  103.          XXXXXXXX.REV There may be one of these files for any of the
  104.                       programs described in PAFRV.SUM.  If present, the
  105.                       files will contain recent, subjective review
  106.                       information about that particular program from the
  107.                       compiler or any interested submitter.  There are no
  108.                       REV files in this version. (1 or more pages each)

  113.        Please let me know where you first upload new versions of your PAF
  114.        related software.  If you will arrange for me to be able to download
  115.        from that BBS, I will check periodically and help with the
  116.        distribution when I find a new release.  If you would prefer, you
  117.        can send me new revisions or new utilities by mail.  It's my goal
  118.        to see that up-to-date copies of all the software described in PAF
  119.        Review are widely available.  Unless someone else has already done
  120.        so, I will be personally uploading copies of any new upgrades to: 
  121.        Channel 1, Exec-PC, Capital PAF UG BBS, Hackers Haven.

  125.        ║ Where to Find These Utilities ║

  127.        If you have access to any of the sources listed in the previous
  128.        section, they should always have the latest version.  Other BBS
  129.        systems specializing in genealogy will have some or all.  Be aware
  130.        that several versions of shareware programs are usually available
  131.        on any given BBS.  Look for the file name given in PAF Review,
  132.        similar names, or the version number that you can usually find as
  133.        part of the file description.  Please note that CompuServe limits
  134.        file names to six characters.  Frequently this will match the first
  135.        six characters used in the BBS file name.  You may have to look at
  136.        the file description to figure out the version.  Don't waste time
  137.        downloading an outdated version if the current one is available.

  139.        I will mail copies of the entire set of utilities to any BBS or
  140.        individual.  Send formatted diskettes (three 1.4MB or 1.2MB) and a
  141.        SASE diskette mailer.  If you wish to receive future updates, return
  142.        one diskette/mailer with return postage after each mailing.

  148.        and complete as possible, I'm sure there are omissions and mistakes.

  168.        Most shareware/freeware authors develop programs that are useful to
  169.        themselves and perhaps a close circle of friends in response to an
  170.        immediate need.  They soon find these projects take ever larger
  171.        amounts of time if the product is to become easy, safe and enjoyable
  172.        to use.  The most important thing you can do to encourage their
  173.        continued craziness on behalf of us all is to provide some feedback. 
  174.        Did you like it?  Is it useful?  How and when do you use it?  Are
  175.        there problems that you can see?  Is it the greatest thing since
  176.        sliced bread?!  Please tell the author.  The second most important
  177.        thing is to register those products you use regularly and make a
  178.        payment if called for.  Many authors stop developing and improving
  179.        their software because without feedback, they assume no one else
  180.        recognized the genius of their idea.  Let's not let that happen to
  181.        these products that can make our research easier, more productive
  182.        and more enjoyable.

  188.        Unless directly quoted from others, the comments contained in PAF
  189.        Review are my own.  The program descriptions are basically from the
  190.        authors' documentation, either printed or online, but in most cases
  191.        I have edited them to take less room.  Any review comments are based
  192.        on experience with the software in question and the program's
  193.        documentation.  While I take full responsibility for my subjective
  194.        opinions contained herein (don't blame the program's authors for
  195.        what I say!), I can take no responsibility for any problems that may
  196.        occur because of your use of any PAF utility discussed in PAF
  197.        Review.

  204.        Try new software out first on a copy of your data.  Use FRCHK before
  205.        and after your test to verify that you have data integrity both
  206.        before and after you run the new software.  Whether you are using
  207.        a new utility or not, back up your data frequently to allow you to
  208.        recover from problems that may occur.

  210.        I hope my efforts have made it easier for you to find that specific
  211.        utility that will help you solve your PAF related problem of the
  212.        moment.  If you don't find what you are looking for, let me know
  213.        that too.  Somewhere, right now, someone is probably thinking about
  214.        writing the program you need and it may well be available in the
  215.        next version of PAF Review.
