NEMESIS 1.10 LAST-MINUTE NOTES AND INFORMATION
SHAREWARE VERSION
Last Updated Dezember 92
Copyright Robert Hoerner and Christian Sy
──────────────────────────────────────────────
This file contains last-minute notes and instructions on installing
and using NEMESIS.
Information on registering NEMESIS can be found in LICENSE.DOC and
REGISTER.FRM.
Shareware vendors please have a look in VENDOR.DOC and OFFER.TXT !
─────────────
Introduction:
─────────────
NEMESIS is an anti-virus program which delivers reliable protection
against known AND unknown viruses. If it detects supicious
operations, you are warned and asked how to react on it. You have
always full control over the actions taken by NEMESIS !
─────────────
Installation:
─────────────
The installation process is slightly different depending on whether
you've got the shareware version of NEMESIS as a self-extracting
archive (with a .EXE extension) or in packed form (.ZIP extension).
> If you received your NEMESIS shareware disk from a disk vendor or
directly from us, you should have a file named NEM110.EXE. This
is a self-extracting archive containing all of the shareware
distribution files. To install NEMESIS, create a NEMESIS subdirec-
tory and then extract all the files into that directory:
C:\>md \NEMESIS
C:\>cd \NEMESIS
C:\NEMESIS>a:NEM110
> Alternatively, if you downloaded NEMESIS from a BBS or CompuServe
(or any of the other online services), you will have a file
called NEM110.ZIP, and you'll need PKUNZIP to extract the files.
If your copy of NEMESIS was compressed using one of the other
file compression utilities, such as ARJ or LHARC, for example,
then it is not in the original form and you should not use it.
Install NEMESIS by creating a NEMESIS subdirectory and then
extracting all the files into that directory:
C:\>md \NEMESIS
C:\>cd NEMESIS
C:\NEMESIS>pkunzip nem110.zip
To access NEMESIS from any drive or subdirectory on your computer, you
need to add the NEMESIS directory to your DOS search path. Type "path"
at the DOS prompt to see your current path, and then add NEMESIS to it:
C>path
PATH=C:\DOS33;C:\MYPROGS (for example)
C>path c:\dos33;c:\myprogs;c:\NEMESIS
Tip for advanced users:
You only need NEMESIS.COM and NEMESIS.BIN to start NEMESIS.
Instead of changing your path to include the NEMESIS subdirectory,
you can simply copy these files to any subdirectory in your search path.
If you have created the files NEMESIS.EXT, NEMESIS.CFG or NEMESIS.OVA,
then copy these files into the same directory.
However, we recommend to create a separate directory for NEMESIS.
────────────
Quick Start:
────────────
Change to the path were you installed Nemesis and type the following
at the DOS prompt:
C>NEMESIS
If you have EMS-memory, NEMESIS will now scan your harddisk
for executable files and protect them. The file-extensions which are
protected are displayed on the first screen (if you don't have
EMS-memory, this step is skipped).
After the search has finished, NEMESIS presents a screen with its
current status. For changing this status by commandline-parameters,
please refer to the detailed description in NEMESIS.DOC.
The purpose of NEMESIS is to deliver maximal protection and
minimal disturbance. That means you should not notice at all that
you have loaded NEMESIS unless there is a reason to warn you !
We strongly recommend to study NEMESIS.DOC, especially the
paragraphs about the detailed descriptions of the possible
warnings, so that you are able to react properly if this case
occurs.
─────────────
Verification:
─────────────
Since Version 0.99, Nemesis has a built-in CRC-check.
The check looks like this :
C:\NEMESIS> nemesis ( you typed "nemesis" to start it)
Performing selftest, please wait √ passed
Performing pre-infection-test, please wait √ passed
Loading messages from C:\NEMESIS\NEMESIS.BIN****√**+ √ passed
You will not have a chance to read these lines, because they normally
are displayed "on the fly" without stopping the installation.
Only if you start Nemesis and it is modified, you'll get the message
'NEMESIS IS DAMAGED OR INFECTED' and the above text remains on your
screen.
Unless you see this message, you don't have to worry about the
authentification of Nemesis. But this does not mean that the
whole packet is complete.
Once you've uncompressed the archive, please check that none of the
files are missing. The complete list of files can be found in the
text file PACKING.LST. If your archive is not complete, please
DON'T give it away to others !
─────────────────────
Colors / Languages
─────────────────────
the descriptions of the different message-files:
deutsch.bin : German message-file (colored)
english.bin : English message-file (colored)
nemesis.bin : Default message file (English/colored)
if you want to use the german message-file, please copy the
file german.bin to nemesis.bin.
COPY DEUTSCH.BIN NEMESIS.BIN
Read NEMDOC for further informations. Use NEMCFG.EXE to customize your
colors.
─────────────────────
additional tools
─────────────────────
together with Nemesis you get some additional useful programs:
1) NEMCFG.EXE : use it to customize NEMESIS' colors (for monochrome
monitors f.e.)
2) MEM.EXE : use it to verify your system memory.
Useful to detect terminate-stay-resident programs.
Use it to determine, wether you have or have not upper
memory and / or expanded memory.
3) EMSTEST.COM: use it, if NEMESIS behaves "strange" and if EMS-errors
are displayed. Determines, wether EMS functions used by
NEMESIS are supported by your software / hardware.
4) NEMTEST.COM: tool to detect whether Nemesis is loaded.
Additionally to a message it returns Errorlevel 1 if it found
Nemesis, 0 if it didn't (useful in batches).
Note: the version in this packet detects as well Nemesis versions
lower that 0.99. But if you use a nemtest.com from earlier
versions that 0.99, it will not detect Nemesis version 0.99
and above. Confused ? Me not ;-)
simply don't use older versions of nemtest.com and NEMESIS.COM.
────────────────────
NEMESIS is Shareware:
────────────────────
NEMESIS is being marketed as shareware. Shareware gives users an
opportunity to evaluate a program before buying it. If you like
NEMESIS and wish to continue using it after a 30-day trial period, you
must order the registered version. You'll receive the full retail
package including support directly from the authors.
Please see the text file LICENSE.DOC for more information about the
benefits of becoming a registered user.
──────────────────────────
Uploading NEMESIS to BBS's:
──────────────────────────
We encourage you to give copies of the shareware version of NEMESIS to
your friends and colleagues, and to upload it to any BBS's that you
use. When uploading NEMESIS, please upload only the original, unchanged
archive NEM110.ZIP.
───────
Sysops:
───────
We do explicitly permit uploads of the shareware version of NEMESIS to
BBS systems. (Obviously uploads of the registered version are not permit-
ted). If you have any question as to whether the version which has been
uploaded to your BBS is shareware, simply uncompress the NEMESIS-archive
and run it with parameter "?" or have a look into NEMESIS.BIN.
The actual version is at top of this file in plain ASCII.
** DO NOT REPACK ANY FILE ! **
NEMESIS checks the date, where it has been started the first time and
will display a "register now"-message 3 weeks later !
The signon message will tell you which version you have, and if it is an
'unregistered evaluation copy'
If your BBS is associated with a shareware library which distributes
disks for a fee, you must meet our requirements BEFORE placing NEMESIS
in the library. See the file VENDOR.DOC for details. This restriction
does not affect your permission to place NEMESIS on the BBS as long as you
are not charging a fee for its distribution (other than the usual user
fees for general use of the board).
If you are cleaning up NEMESIS files on your board please delete any old
copies prior to version 1.10; they are all now obsolete and contain
some bugs...
Thanks for your support of NEMESIS !
────────
Vendors:
────────
IMPORTANT !!!
We do require that you obtain written permission from us before placing
NEMESIS or any part of the NEMESIS package in any shareware or other disk
library, or distributing shareware copies for a fee in any way.
For detailed information please read VENDOR.DOC !
──────────
Thank you!
