FAMILY HISTORY SYSTEM
Installation Procedure for
Basic Set of Programs
Before beginning this INSTALL procedure, you should first make sure that you
have all the diskettes that make up the public portion of the Family History
System software. You should have two 5 1/4" (360k) diskettes or one 3 1/2
(720k) diskettes. During the INSTALL procedure, the 5 1/4" diskettes will
be referred to as the "B1" and "B2" diskettes, or the 3 1/2" diskette will
be referred to as "B1". If your diskettes are not labeled this way,
you should mark them properly before beginning the INSTALL procedure. To
determine the proper Identification for a diskette, place the diskette in
your A drive and enter: dir a:/p
The "B1" diskette will have a file named "FHSDISK.B1" on it. Similarly, the
"B2" diskette will have a file: "FHSDISK.B2". In the following description,
I will refer to these diskettes as the Family History System "distribution
diskettes" because that is how they are "distributed" or "sent out" by me.
(NOTE to Registered Users: If you are installing the complete set of
Family History System programs, you should have one additional 5 1/4"
diskette or 3 1/2" diskette. It will be labeled "X1". You should place
that diskette in a diskette drive and enter: GO INSTALL
to receive instructions for installing the complete set of programs. The
remaining instructions in this document are for those who are ONLY working
with the PUBLIC VERSION of the system.)
The distribution diskettes for the Family History System contain many files
that are not used during the normal operation of the system. The purpose of
this procedure is to prepare a "working copy" of those files that are
required for you to create, maintain and process files of information about
your own Family.
If you are planning to run the system from diskettes you will first have to
format one or two diskettes to hold this working copy of the programs. One
diskette should be labeled the STARTUP diskette. To prepare it, place your
DOS diskette, which has the FORMAT command, in the "A" drive of your PC, the
STARTUP diskette in the "B" drive and enter the following command:
A>FORMAT B: /S
(NOTE: with the addition of programs to the April 92 option, there is now
insufficient space on a 360k STARTUP diskette to make it "bootable" and
allow for all the FHS programs that are to be installed on it. Therefore
do not format a 360k STARTUP diskette with the "/S" parameter.)
If you are using 360k diskettes, you will need a second diskette which
should be labeled the REPORT diskette. After preparing the STARTUP diskette
place the REPORT diskette in the "B" drive and enter the command:
A>FORMAT B:
WARNING: any form of the FORMAT command will destroy all contents of the
diskette which is placed in the "B" drive, so make sure the one you use
does not have anything on it that you wish to save.
If you are planning to run the programs from a HARD DISK, the INSTALL
procedure will create a FAMILY sub-directory on your hard disk and copy
all program files to it. An FHS.BAT file will be created in the main
directory of your hard disk to assist you in starting the programs.
When you have completed this preparation and are ready for installation
to begin, place the Family History System "B1" diskette in drive "A" and
enter:
A:GO INSTALL xx y z
where: xx = 2D if installing on two 360k floppy diskettes
= 1D if installing on a 720k (or greater) capacity diskette
= HD if installing on a hard disk
y = the drive identifier (A,B,C,...) for the drive in which the
distribution diskettes will be placed during the INSTALL
procedure,
and z = the drive identifier (B,C,D,...) for the hard disk drive
or floppy drive on which the working copy of the programs
is to be created.
A NOTE FOR THOSE WHO ARE UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION:
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of this software, you
may continue working with all your family files just as before. No
conversion process is required. If you have made any changes to the
default file name tables, screen colors, or printer control tables,
you may transfer those changes to the new program diskettes by
copying the FAMILY.DAT file from your previous program diskette to
the STARTUP diskette. If you are re-installing the programs on a
hard disk, your FAMILY.DAT file will not be affected so your changes
to these default values will be retained throughout the INSTALL
process.

Enter: GO PRINT INSTALL
to receive a printed copy of these instructions.
