  19. Statement by Governor Bill Clinton on meeting with Israeli Prime
  20. Minister Yitzhak Rabin
  21. August 12, 1992

  23.      I am pleased to have the opportunity to meet today with
  24. Israel's new Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin.  His warm welcome in
  25. the United States is a tribute to his dedication to the values our
  26. two nations share and to the importance of our relationship both to
  27. Americans and Israelis.
  28.  
  29.      This meeting provided us the chance to discuss a variety of
  30. issues of concern to both our countries, and to emphasize the
  31. critical need to move forward in several key areas.  I support the
  32. agreement on loan guarantees for Israel reached yesterday and urge
  33. the Congress to move expeditiously to grant this long overdue
  34. humanitarian assistance.  The right of Soviet Jews to emigrate is
  35. one that we have embraced as a nation for many years.  We now have
  36. a responsibility to assist Israel to absorb successfully these
  37. talented individuals, who are making a remarkable contribution to
  38. Israeli society.

  40.      We also discussed the current peace negotiations in the
  41. region.  I commend Prime Minister Rabin for his determination to
  42. achieve significant progress.  I expressed to him my strong
  43. personal commitment to support the peace process.  The end of the
  44. Cold War and the recent elections in Israel offer a promising
  45. opportunity for progress toward a lasting peace in the Middle East.
  46. American leadership and sustained involvement will be crucial to
  47. achieving that goal, and I pledge to build on that progress as
  48. President.

  50.      We discussed other areas of continuing cooperation, including
  51. reining in the dangerous spread of weapons of mass destruction,
  52. promoting democracy in the region and enhancing the strategic,
  53. technical and economic cooperation between the U.S. and Israel.  As
  54. the war with Iraq brutally demonstrated, Israel continues to be at
  55. risk in the region and needs our unwavering support.

  57.      If elected, I look forward to working with Prime Minister
  58. Rabin to advance these goals.  We stand together today with hope
  59. that a new dawn of peace is rising for Israel and the region.  It
  60. is an opportunity that, together, the United States, Israel and the
  61. Arab world cannot afford to miss.
