DISCLAIMER
Users of BBS-ADS must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"BBS-ADS is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The
author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
which may result from the use of BBS-ADS."
BBS-ADS is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue
to develop new products.
If you find BBS-ADS to be a useful program and continue to
use it after a reasonable trial period (30 days), you must make a
registration payment of $7.00 to Madison Farrell, III. The $7.00
registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer
at any one time.
Anyone distributing BBS-ADS for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Main Street Programming Services at the address
below for authorization. Main Street Programming Services must
be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
latest version of BBS-ADS.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of BBS-ADS along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it.
INTRODUCTION TO BBS-ADS
BBS-ADS is a program designed to include a BBS advertisement
inside an archive file. While some may frown upon this practice,
the addition of such advertisements has become quite common. BBS-
ADS simplifies this task, inserting a differently named file into
each archive it processes. BBS-ADS will also delete
advertisements from archive files that are transmitted to your
system, allowing you to unclutter the archive or easily replace
the advertisement from some other system with one of your own.
LIMITATIONS OF THE SHAREWARE VERSION
The SHAREWARE version of BBS-ADS is limited only by the
number of ad-filenames it can select for inclusion or deletion.
It is fully functional in every other aspect. This version of
BBS-ADS can only process five ad-filenames.
You may use BBS-ADS for 30 days. After 30 days, you must
register the program or delete it.
INSTALLATION OF BBS-ADS
In order for BBS-ADS to operate properly, you must first
create three files: BBS-ADS.CFG, BBS-ADS.LST, and BBS-ADS.DEL.
These files should be created in the same sub-directory as
BBS-ADS.EXE.
* VERSION 1.0 users please note that the format of BBS-ADS.CFG has
changed! You will need to create the file using the DOS COPY
CON command or BBS-ADS built-in editor (explained below).
This version of BBS-ADS has a built-in editor to make
creating these necessary files easier. To invoke the BBS-ADS file
editor, type "BBS-ADS /ADS" at the DOS prompt and press ENTER.
The editor will present you with options to create each individual
file as well as return to DOS. The editor will accept most
characters generated by the keyboard, but please note that
pressing ENTER without any input will retain the old data for that
particular entry. (ie. Pressing ENTER when prompted for the new
archive add command when the old archive add command is PKZIP -a
will retain the PKZIP -a in the new file)
SYNTAX OF ADDITIONAL FILES
BBS-ADS.CFG contains the configuration data necessary for
BBS-ADS.EXE to process your archive. The syntax for BBS-ADS.CFG
is:
Line 1 ---> The name of your archive utility plus the command it
uses to add a file to an archive.
Line 2 ---> The name of your archive utility plus the command it
uses to delete a file from an archive.
Line 3 ---> The filename of the master ad-file you want included
inside of processed archives.
An example configuration file might read as this:
(1) PKZIP -a
(2) PKZIP -d
(3) MASTER.AD
BBS-ADS.LST contains the listing of filenames that are to be
chosen from during the selection of names for the ad-file.
* Please note that this list is limited to only five filenames in
the shareware version of BBS-ADS; however, registered users may
include up to 99 files in this list.
An example configuration might be:
(1) readme.now
(2) whatthis.txt
(3) super.bbs
.
.
.
(99) megabord.bbs
BBS-ADS.DEL is configured just as BBS-ADS.LST; however,
filenames included in BBS-ADS.DEL are deleted from archives
processed by BBS-ADS.EXE.
* These files can be created from the BBS-ADS built-in editor, any
ASCII editor, or the DOS COPY CON command.
After creating the files necessary for BBS-ADS to operate, it
will need to be included in whatever batch file executes AFTER a
file upload.
The proper syntax for BBS-ADS.EXE is:
BBS-ADS filename.ext
In most cases, the filename.exe is passed from the BBS
software to the batch file in parameter %1. This may vary from
software to software. Please consult the information that came
with your BBS software.
FINAL NOTES AND CAVEATS
BBS-ADS will execute after EVERY successful upload. You
should be warned that if you execute this particular file on more
than one occasion with a previously verified file then more than
one ad-file will be included in the archive. For example, if you
are using PCBoard and run a TEST on a file previously
uploaded/scanned and processed by BBS-ADS, then you will run the
risk of inserting another ad-file into the archive.
In most instances, this should not present a problem since
files are generally verified and processed only one time on a
system.
