AEROSPATIALE/AERITALIA ATR-42
The ATR-42 is manufactured by a consortium of the French (Aerospatiale) and
Italian (Aeritalia). The aircraft enjoys wide spread popularity among the
regional airlines throughout the world. U.S. Operators include Trans World
Express (formally Pan Am Express), American Eagle (parts of American Eagle
include the former Command Airways who was the first US operator of the ATR-
42), Continental Express (parts of Continental Express include the former Bar
Harbor), as well as others.
The AAF version of the ATR-42 was made by as consortium as well. Art Rutty
(72550,2533) was responsible for all the work in AAF, while I,
Bob Berlyn (71571,3624) was responsible for the technical and performance
information.
The ATR is powered by two Pratt & Whitney of Canada PW 210 engines. They are
rated at 2000 SHP each, but normally only 92% (1800 SHP) is used for take
off. The aircraft carries 44 or 46 passengers. A crew of three Captain, First
Officer and Flight attendant. The avionics include Honywell/Sperry SPZ-6000
Digital Automatic Flight Control System (DAFCS)(fancy name for autopilot),
DFZ-600 Flight Guidance System (FGS), EDZ-811 Electronic Flight Instrument
System (EFIS)(Also known as glass cockpit), an AHZ-600 Altitude and Heading
Reference System (AHRS, fancy super duper attitude and directional gyros) as
well as a PRIMUS 800 weather radar system. At least one airline, (that would
be the one I work for :)) Trans World Express (formally Pan Am Express) is
authorized to operate the aircraft to CAT II ILS approach minimums. That is
a visibility of 1200 RVR (Feet), and a decision height of 100 Ft. The ATR
will reach a true airspeed of about 250 to 260 Kts in level flight.
The real world ATR-42 is not a difficult aircraft to fly, neither is the AAF
version. We made every attempt to make the visual as well as the performance
model look and fly like the real thing. Obviously with the limitations of
FltSim4 some compromises had to be made. I think the end result is quite
acceptable.
The AAF version is painted in the colors of Pan Am Express. Pan Am and Pan Am
Express ceased to exist on December 4, 1992. I felt it would be appropriate
to honor an airline that many people have very fond memories of. Pan Am and
Pan Am Express are now part of aviation history.
(Gone But Never Forgotten)
In a separate file titled ATR-FCOM.TXT I have included the Flight Crew
Operating Manual for the model. Please give this a read, or better yet print
it out. This document is not long and gives you all the info you need to fly
the ATR-42 like a pro.
Installation:
To use the ATR-42 in FS4, copy the following files to your FS4
directory:
DOS FILE NAME MODE TITLE
ATR-42__.SIM ATR-42
ATR-42__
To use in AAF copy the following into FS4
REFATR42.SIM refatr42
To modify the ATR, load ATR-42.AFX into AAF, unpack, and use normal
AAF techniques.
We would be glad to hear any questions or comments.
Enjoy.
