Software/hardware Notes:

June 29, 1992
1:> There can be only 200 entries typed into the MTEZ dialing directory.
June 26, 1992
1:> "We bought this because sales said it was user friendly. It's the most
un-user friendly software we ever saw" [MTEZ]
June 15, 1992
1:> I'm getting quite a few calls where people pick the wrong modem in MTEZ.
They pick VFXxxxx modem instead of FX9624/FC9624 selection.
June 11, 1992
1:> The Options section of MTEZ makes dialing impossible, if you have special
dialing needs, and don't have it set up EXACTLY right. Yet there are NO
instructions on the options screen at all.
2:> Some people are downloading ZUPDATE to resolve problems, and their
problems become worse. One customer now cannot get Expessfax to DIAL. It goes
off-hook and just sits there. (I have spent approx. 2 hours on the phone with
this customer so far, 50 min. of this time with Magicsoft. And I must call him
back later today after calling Magicsoft again).
June 10, 1992
1:> If you have a mono-monitor you have to install MSHERC. There is no way to
remove MSHERC without re-booting the computer, even though nothing besides
MTEZ uses it. So you are using memory up when you don't need it.
June 8, 1992
1:> When you Edit something to fax in MTEZ editor, the file is saved in the
MTEZ directory instead of the FAX directory. The user cannot find the file to
send it.
2:> MTEZ uses 4 different ways to exit a screen, or feild or program. <esc>,
[cr], <alt> X, and <f10>.
3:> The illustrations in the MTEZ manual are virtually illegible.
May 20, 1992
1:> MTEZ does not include scripting with the standard package. (all others
[Procomm, QModem, Bitcom] include it)
2:> If you make a mistake entering the phone number (and get a recording etc)
you cannot just abort. If you abort, MTEZ will still keep re-trying that
number. You have to go to the Pending Event menu, and cancell the 'event'.
3:> Using the convert program from MTEZ to convert received DCX to PCX, you
cannot put the PCX in your Signature, in the configuration. It must be TIF.
May 13, 1992
1:> When MTEZ gets a BUSY, it does not display BUSY, it just goes back to
IDLE, and 'pending event'. Nothing is displayed on screen to show why any fax
was not sent.
2:> Quite a few customers have problems because MTEZ looks for the TMP
directory, which is put in the Autoexec.bat by Windows, but not created by
Windows. So MTEZ quits.
3:> One customer claims that MTEZ is so user unfriendly that even the computer
store doesn't know how to use it.
4:> We have been getting 'not enough memory' when trying to VIEW a FAX
(received) with MTEZ class 1, since we started shipping it. This can happen
with any version of MTEZ class 1. It also happened on my computer even though
MTEZ class 2 has no problem viewing a fax. I just got off the phone with Larry
at MagicSoft, and this was the first time he has heard of the problem from
Zoom.
5:> We should have at least a few 3.5" diskettes of WinFax Lite.
6:> MTEZ log does not keep phone number in the main log. If you refer to the
log to see which faxes were not sent, you must press <D> for detail, on each
entry that does not show OK, to find the phone number that 'failed' to receive
the fax. Not troublesome on one or a few faxes, but if you faxed a LARGE group
overnite, it would be very time consuming to check them all in the AM.
7:> MTEZ does not show duration of send on the main fax log. Sometimes a fax
reports OK when the whole fax was not sent. The only way to tell for sure, is
by duration. You must press <D> for detail, on each entry you want to check.
May 7, 1992
0:> We have SIX people in tech support now, and I am sitting here by myself
(again)!
1:> MTEZ will not receive in fine mode. One customer reported the fax
stretched 2x in height when a fine mode fax comes in. (BitFax 3.09 will
receive in fine)
2:> MTEZ only has one field in the phone-book. Can not put persons name and
company name, and insert them in 2 fields on the cover page. (BitFax 3.09 now
supports the 2nd field, for cover pages).
4:> At times, it helps to set a fax-speed lower than the maximum, to negotiate
with some fax machines (or fax boards). In MTEZ you must exit METZ, remove
FAXMAN from memory, run SETUP to change the fax speed, save it, reload FAXMAN,
then re-run MTEZ (or FAX) and try again. Then to return to maximum fax speed,
you must repeat the ENTIRE unload, reset and reload procedure. (with BitFax
you press <f6>, set the new speed, press <F9> for temporary, then try again).
5:> You can set color or BW mode from command line each time you run MTEZ.
But make the video mode the default, or to change to one of the other 2 video
modes you need to re-install MTEZ from your floppy diskettes.
6:> If we send MTEZ on 1.2M diskettes, large retailers should have 1 or 2
copies of MTEZ on 360K diskettes (3-disk set). This will allow them to give
them to customers without 1.2k drives, and remove most of the task from tech
support of sending out the diskettes.
7:> We need to put ZPORTS on the MTEZ diskettes.
April 29, 1992
1:> Unlike BitFax, MTEZ does not show any indication on the screen when
receiving a fax (a fairly common question).
2:> MTEZ: This is the first time we have had to have one person working full-
time to get the software working properly.
4:> (see April 17,1992 #1:> )
April 28, 1992
1:> Why do we have so much trouble with Winfax 2, when Winfax PRO seems to
work so well? Is the Winfax 2 that Delrina supplys to us a substandard or old
version?
2:> The most requested feature that is not on the MTEZ we ship, is COMMAND
LINE SEND of faxes.
3:> MTEZ as shipped does not have MANUAL SEND of faxes.
4:> I called one of the customers who got the 'ringmate' faxmodem yesterday.
She spent virtually the intire 20-30 minutes complaining about MTEZ. "it lacks
flexiblity, it tries to do TOO MUCH, hard to customise". She also talked to
Magicsoft, and is disgusted with them. They didn't know the answers to her
questions. In one case (Larry) said to her "why the hell did you ask for me?"
(one of the people at Magicsoft told her to speak to Larry).
5:> When an inititalization string is set in MTEZ, MTEZ will send the 'Mx'
(ie; M1) right after the AT in the init string. So if you start the string
AT&F... MTEZ changes that to ATM1&F... Evidently it also does some other
thing at the same time, because the modem will NOT initialize when the string
has AT&F in MTEZ. This prohibits proper initialization of the modem, if you
use another software that changes some register that MTEZ init-string does not
set. AT&F is NEEDED, and is recommended in all our manuals.
April 27, 1992
1:> MagicSoft has been telling people WHO DO NOT HAVE ZOOM modems to call ZOOM
for tech support! One customer told MAGICSOFT he has a MEGAHERTZ modem
and MagicSoft gave him the Zoom tech support number and said to call Zoom.
2:> When MTEZ is installed, 8 option/location screens appear, to be 'filled
out'. There are no instructions for setting these up during installation.
People fill them out, and then MTEZ will dial with ATDT but will NOT DIAL from
dialing directory.
April 24, 1992
3:> I have NEVER been get through to MAGICSOFT 'tech support' when I had a
customer on the phone, to get help. If they are not going to support Zoom
customers, we MUST be able to get through for help.
4:> We have been getting calls about the DIAL TONE being too LOUD, and that
ATL0 will NOT turn it down (on several recent modems). What differences in
design are there from the older MXR & HCR modems to the recent ones? ATL0 does
affect the volume of dialing and responses etc, just does not turn down the
dial tone which BLASTS out of the speaker.
April 23, 1992
1:> MTEZ Cannot send fax without cover page, unless you go to the config menu
and go to the middle of the menu and change cover to NO. Conversly, once it is
set to NO you cannot send a cover page without going back to the config menu
and changing it to YES.
2:> J&R Music World says MTEZ is a 'BEAR' to use, and they get MANY more calls
from customers with complaints. (from Terry M.)
3:> We have had more bug - updates with MTEZ, than with all other software
combined.
4:> At least 1 in 4 persons calling with MTEZ comments on the poor
documentation manual.
5:> A request for manual SEND of faxes for MTEZ (not included on distribution
diskettes)
April 17, 1992
1:> One of the major problems users have with MTEZ comes because MTEZ alters
the autoexec.bat when it installs. Some computers will not even complete
booting, once the autoexec.bat is altered. The software works once the
autoexec.bat is returned to normal, and MTEZ is run by first doing CD/MTEZ
then running FAXMAN and MTEZ. My suggestion is to have a BAT file, that does
CD/MTEZ then runs FAXMAN and/or MTEZ, instead of changing the autoexec.bat.
2:> A problem with internal modems comes when a computer uses an IDE
controller card that has built-in serial ports. Often the modem will not work
(com 3/4) or the mouse (com 1/2) will not work when the modem is installed. An
IDE controller, and seperate comport card works OK.
April 14, 1992
1:> MTEZ does not allow sending part of a document (ie; 1 page or 2 pages of
a multi-page document)
April 10, 1992
1:> MTEZ does not include MANUAL RECEIVE with the disks.
April 9, 1992
1:> MTEZ does not include
A: 'command line' fax sending, or
B: converting incoming faxes to TIF (to edit on a paint program), unless you
get additional modules, not included on the 2 disks.
2:> Often when a 'V' modem will not connect, you must use register S37 and the
'N0' switch, to force connect speed, while keeping V.42bis negotiation, for
error correction. *MTEZ will not allow this by individual entry.* (Qmodem,
PCPLus, allow each entry to be individually set). MTEZ will set port speed to
14,400 but cannot keep 38,400 port speed AND set modem speed to 14,400.
