_________
___ ___ (Ming I)
_________
The Image: Flame within the earth
idea beneath substance
brilliant but hidden
The Elements: primal fire beneath primal earth, merging
Astral Significance: the conjunction of Mercury and the Sun within the spring
and summer signs of the zodiac
Ruling Planets: Venus and Jupiter
Principles, Characteristics, and Manifestations:
shadowing, covering, hiding, secret orders and brotherhoods, forbidden
knowledge, keeping ones true convictions hidden, the wounding of the
bright, shielded lights, the persecution of the intellectual, secrets,
examination of motives, self-analysis, psychology, veils, ciphers,
extinguishing, ending, a lack of appreciation, being unrewarded or
not being given due credit, injury
The hexagram Ming I is often called 'The Darkening of the Light', 'The
Wounding of the Bright', or 'Intelligence Wounded'. This figure is sometimes
titled 'Concealment of Illumination' or 'Wounding of Illumination'. The lower
triad of light is here covered over and swallowed by the earth above it. The
casting of earth upon a fire smothers and wounds the flame, just as a docile
and subservient society ignores the brilliance of illuminated individuals.
This idea is also born out by the hexagrams astral configuration- the con-
junction of Mercury and the Sun is the most common (and longest lasting) con-
junction, and even when not in line with the Sun, the gem-like libido of Mer-
cury is almost always overwhelmed and hidden by the glare of daylight. Thus
the sighting of the swiftest and brightest of the planets is rare and remark-
able. The idea of harming or wounding may also derive from the superstitions
associated with eclipses in almost all ancient cultures. The disappearance of
the Moon or the Sun was commonly interpreted as an evil omen presaging disas-
ters, crop failures, invasions, or the death of kings and rulers. An eclipse
was sure to provoke fear of the end of the natural order or the destruction of
the Sun, Earth or Moon.
Social Implications: the simple leading the enlightened
mothers protecting middle daughters
mature women serving old women
