___ ___
_________
_________ 28 Stress [The Crossbeam]
_________
_________ (Ta Kuo)
___ ___
The Image: The lake rises above the trees
wood beneath water
joy is penetrated
The Elements: evolved air beneath evolved water, merging
Astral Significance: the conjunction of Mercury and Saturn in the autumn
and winter signs of the zodiac
Ruling Planets: Venus and Mars
Principles, Characteristics, and Manifestations:
tension, pressure, the bearing of weight, upholding, supporting, crowding
within, congestion, bracing up, crossbeams, ridgepoles, excluding the
fringe and the eccentric, peer pressure, banishment, the will of the
majority, excess, preponderance
Ta Kuo has been described as the 'Preponderance of the Great'. It has
also been penned as 'Excess' and as 'The Passing of Greatness'. Compared to
an unbraced roof beam, this hexagram lacks the vigor and planning of Mercury,
as well as the thoroughness and perseverance of distant Saturn. The weight of
the solid lines in the middle causes the symbol to sag and break. The image
of wood beneath moisture, Ta Kuo shunts aside both the very young and the very
old. In a time of great anxiety, 'Stress' demands flexibility and an optomis-
tic demeanor.
Social Implications: the youngest daughter leading the eldest daughter
old women commanding young girls
the meek serving the complacent
