_________
___ ___
___ ___ 04 Folly
___ ___
_________ (Meng)
___ ___
The Image: Before the mountain, a gorge
danger beneath the heights
the unknown within the unmoving
The Elements: primal water beneath evolved earth, all sinking
Astral Significance: Venus conjunct Saturn in the spring or summer signs
of the zodiac
Ruling Planets: Venus and Jupiter
Principles, Characteristics, and Manifestations:
youthful exuberance, naivete, importunity, ignorance, perplexity,
indecision, immaturity, masked danger, emotional entrances, seemingly
impassable obstacles, vast differences in altitude or station in life,
lack of tact, incoherent motion, fits and starts, helplessly mired,
waterfalls, mountain springs, hidden defects, eroding foundations,
obscurity, unproven and unnoticed entities
The hexagram Meng is traditionally scribed as 'Youthful Folly'. It has
also been translated as 'Immaturity', and as 'Uncultivated Growth'. Occa-
sionally, this hexagram is penned as 'Obscurity' or 'Blindness'. The image
is of a treacherous river gorge twisting between steep cliffs. This symbol
of danger before superior positions warns against advancing into overwhelm-
ingly disadvantageous terrain. In astral terms, the naive innocence of Venus
is rudely awakened by the restrictive discipline of dim and distant Saturn.
Meng demands flexibility, poise, and patience.
Social Implications: The youngest son leading the middle sons
the emotional serving the calm
mature men held back by older men
