Recommended speed is 12 mgzt, The absolute final and absolute latest release
date is September 1st. This is the latest and is our projected date for store
arrival. Please don't despair, this is only an estimate and the way things
are progressing it will surely be out before then. I am not exactly sure what
they exact hard drive requiurements are but it should not be anything over 10.

Todd, will DS require anything unusual in equipment? As an example, Ultima VII
will not work with Stacker disk compression software. Do you see any major
incompatibilities?

Crusaders works fine and we are on schedule to have the game out by October
1st. The only incompatibility we have experienced so far has been with Dr.
Dos. As far as I know, it will not work with this program.

JK: Your party will transfer over with all attributes intact, but most skills
should drop significantly (and your party will come down to about level 5 in
experience). Most of your weapons and armor will be stripped, but various
miscellaneous items will remain (including potions, amulets of life, rings,
etc).
SG: Yep, automapping is still a part of the game. Very much so.

Then what's the point of bringing characters over?

D.HAN [Asst. Sysop] at 07:06 EDT
I seem to have made a mistake; items that are transferred over are entirely
random, including weapons and armor. So it's very possible to have some of
your good weapons and armor survive the transfer over. But again, the whole
thing is random, so you might have to re-do the importing of characters more
than once to get a good transfer of items.
Pitman: One of the BIGGEST advantages a player will have in importing his
experienced characters over a fresh party is the retaining of their attribute
scores (strength, piety, etc., which are usually very high for a party that
went through Bane). And of course, some of the items of power will make it
over (for instance, the sword Avenger or Holy Basher). A fresh party is
virtually naked; robes for armor and the least intimidating of weapons ;)

Danny, that may be so, but it is hardly continuing the "characters," is it?
It has nothing to do with role-playing or character development. All it is is
an inducement to buy and play _Bane of the Cosmic Forge_.

Pitman: I'm not trying to argue with you, but just to simply say that anyone
who is transferring their characters over will have an advantage over fresh
parties. And if it's not "continuing the characters", as you put it, then why
will their be an incentive to actually "downgrade" and play Bane of the Cosmic
Forge? Wouldn't it make more sense to go back to "buy and play" BotCF -if-
the characters do indeed continue their development into the new scenario, as
in the paper and pencil counterpart?

The sole reason being that the characters in COTDS would be more powerful if
the consumer had bought BOTCF. But it is not character development, just stat
lifting.

Here's an argument for carrying characters over! You get fond of them. In Bane
particularly, even if they don't have any intrinsic character development,
your customization gives them personality. I have two Felpurs modeled after
two of my cats, one of whom was killed since I played Bane. Even without gross
sentimentality, I'm waiting to resurrect them in the game. Not to mention that
my personal character is a pretty mean Valkyrie! ....Barb

Barb, I understand your point. But really, most CRPGs don't actually carry
over much more than the characters' names. It's not too hard to give new
characters the old names.
One reason why I enjoy CRPGs that employ many skills is that there is the
possibility to really develop a unique character--one you could actually want
to be carried over.

Man, this game HAS to be close to release! I've seen 3
"previews" the past week: GameByte Issue #5, October's
Strategy Plus (Mama Sez), and the October issue of
PC Games something or other (they really should think up a
more snazzy title.) Plus, the CoDS ads are back out.
I sure hope this one isn't bug-infested as Buglands, er
Darklands.

V'ger-
In Bane I took the ending where you DONT kill Bane and Rebecca...I went
through the room with the Cosmic Forge in it, met a big dragon and jumped into
a spaceship to follow a Cosmic Lord...
Well so far I've watched the intro and have transferred my characters .
The graphics in the intro are ok but they look great in the actual game. The
sound is also very good. I cant comment too much on gameplay so far though
since I keep trying to transfer my characters while retaining at least a
couple of my good items... I really HATE it when my Holy Avenger , Murasma
Blade, Blade Cuisanart, Holy Bashar, and full suit of Ebony Plate+ Toshei-do
armor disappear!!<grin> Transferring characters in pretty time consuming
since you have to go through the intro EVERY time and cant abort it... I
really wish all or none of my items transferred throught, but not just a
couple...
Agent p.s. I hope CoDS is less buggy than
Darklands dont you V'ger!!

What nobody else got this game yet??? I was hoping I could compare parties
because mine seems pathetically weak. I think the best bet is to start with a
brand-new party. I'm going to try that later today. I wasnt ever able to
transfer any decent armor from Bane and finally settled for getting the
Avenger and the Murasma Blade...I figured that was enough power to blast
anything at the beginning of the game..boy was I wrong. Sure, if I hit
something I do major damage but must fight's go like this:
Monster X casts Spell Y and does 25 points of damage to every character!!
Now considering a couple of my characters started out with under 20 hit points
I die pretty quick. Usually half my party is dead before I can even hit once.
15 hit points really does seem pathetically low for a level-5 character... I
havent been able to get off the ground in the game because I die every time!!
I think the characters should either A) Get all their items transferred or
B) start with at least twice as many hit points.. By the end of Bane my
characters were wiping the floor with most bad guys... now I get smashed by 3
Black Birds... really!
Agent
somebody get the game and help me out!!!<grin>

Agent: Did u get this mail-order direct from SirTech, or from
a retailer? I wonder if ALL carry-over characters are
downgraded to a common level, or if there is a relative
downgrade of character attributes. Note that the OFFICIAL
CoDS "playing season" doesn't get underway until Agnari gets
his copy of CoDS. Until then, it's still the exhibition games,

I got it from NTC software here in Toronto Jeff... It's the only place
that I know of that has it up here. I dont know about where you live though.
Of course, NTC always gets games in very early, as in Darklands case.. (that
can be unfortunate though since sometimes early
versions of games are REALLY buggy). Finally starting to get somewhere in
CoDS even though I STILL dont have any armor and only the two good weapons I
was able to bring over from Bane...

CoDS supports Ad-lib, Roland LAPC-1/MT-32, Covox Voice/Sound Master, and

played bane on the amiga. Started a new party, didnt get much weapons or
armour but had no problems starting (somewhere near newworld, although havent
been able to get in yet). Got my characters up to level 4 last night. Havent
found any bugs yet, after playing with darklands that was a welcome surprise!
Takes up only about 6meg on thr HD (yes thats not a typo), great sound and

Wow somebody else has CoDS!! He's right it is not too bad starting out. I
just blew it and took a wrong turn somewhere so I ended up in the wilderness.
Just head for the city and it is much easier. By the way , if you've played
Bane you can jump in without reading the manual since the gameplay is almost
exactly the same. Disarming traps is a lot different though so you might
want to check it out. So far this game looks great!!
One thing I did want to comment on is that the so-called auto mapping is
pretty useless. If you transfer from Bane you start with mapping 0. I dont
know what it is like with a higher skill but with 0 skill your "map" doesnt
even show walls!!! I've started making my own maps just so I can get around.
I really wish the mapping was more like that in Ultima Underworlds. (Now THAT
was auto-mapping!!)

Well, I just picked up CODS from Software Etc in Mt PRospect Il (Chicagoland).
I was drooling so much to try this that I left work early. It came on 2 1.44
meg floppies but I didn't check the final HD size. Installed fine on my 25
386. Supports alot of sound cards. I started with new characters and
started to play. The intro is okay but nothing to write home about. The view
port is small but the graphics look really good. The mouse support is great.
It looks like they used a tweaked VGA mode (not the typical 320x200) but I
could be wrong on this. The game play seems to be fairly the same as BOTCF. I
had a hard time surviving at first but then I changed the skill level from
EXPERT (I must have been on drugs to set it that high) to EASY. Much better.
The story seems kinda weak so far. You are on a planet trying to collect
pieces of a map to find a super duper highly secret of the universe (sounds
like Hitchhikers Guide) but the idea of competing parties looking for the same
items is really neat.
I do have a question about the graphics. Anyone know how they do the dhading
of objects in the distance. I have some routines to do the same viewing as
CODS and the way I do shading is 16 colors at 10 intensity levels each. The
further the wall I have to draw, the darker the intensity of the wall colors.
Works fast even in Turbo C. Maybe some fellow hackers would have an idea.
Sorry.....topic drift :)
Well, so far so fun! I like this much better than the Nintendo colored Clouds

the credit card was billed on 23 Sept for 2day UPS and that's the package it
arrived in on 8 Oct - sure I live in the sticks of West Texas but even in this
backwards area we realize that there is more then 2 days btwn 23 Sept and 8
Oct.
Todd you can let the front office know a letter and/or irate phone calls

They said their copies arrived Wednesday. So South Alabama didn't do too badly

I've transferred my characters from BOCF, and have found the tower in the

The swimming skill will increase _on it's own_ through practice of the skill.
But to ensure you get off to a good start in practicing that skill, make sure
you pool all your points to swimming till each character is up to at least 10.
From then on, you don't have to worry about spending any more points, since
it'll increase all by itself through repeated use of skill.

Yes all that YELLING we did in Wiz VI about endless/hopeless battles of 20
or 30 minutes with the only thing we could do was CNTOL-ALT-DEL must have
gotten somebody's attention.
Have found that resetting the delay level helped with the combat - somebody
had indicated it was horrible. They must have set the delay near max so
newbies didn't t get turned off by missing a lot of info data on the screen.
But it made the combat PAINFULLY slow. Additionally this game really plays
well if you port it to a RAMDRIVE. Of course it then won't run bcs you
installed it to run from your harddrive; but if you then run the install
against your ramdrive version it will modify the Scenario.Hdr file. Of course
if you just copied that file back to the harddrive you couldn't run the game
from the harddrive. But if you rename it to something like Ramdrive.hdr and
store it in your C:\DSavant directory, tis an easy thing for the batch file
that creates the ramdrive and copies all the files to then copy Ramdrive.hdr
to Scenario.hdr right before running the game. I tell you saves or restoring
from a ram drive are a PLEASURE!!!!!!! And with the nice option of indicating
where to write the savefile, one can periodically put it on the harddrive or
floppy just in case power is lost.

I went back in and loaded the Take Pen ending, and came out with
a much better equipped and attribute-laden party. In addition,
I was also dumped to a different part of the forest. My old
party didn't get ONE single potion, while the new party got
plenty of them. At any rate, keep trying the Load Bane option
on the same save file until you get the combination of items
and spells/attributes that you wish. In one, my Lord got his

Anyone ever join the Scouts? Looks like a sort of time-waster,

To all Mac and Amiga CODS players:
We expect to release these formats in early '93, BUT don't hold us to this.
Now that the MS-DOS version in on the market without any bugs as far as we
know, we don't expect any serious application software nightmares to overcome.
But we don't know about unique problems which are related to the Amiga and Mac
hardware platforms. Conversions started about two weeks ago and are
proceeding smoothly. So as matters stand now, expect these in early '93
barring problems. Updates will be posted as we have more info.

for one thing the door guy wants 5,000 gold for "dues" and I don't have it,
and can't forsee getting it too readily in the tower, and for another the
monsters are getting a lot tougher(but that's academic, the biggest problem is
the gold factor). It would be disappointing if I had to run all the way down

Gremlyn you have to PUMP up those spell skills like Thaumaturgy or Alchemy
or what ever is appropriate for that char/profession if you want to see new
spells.
I couldn't live without my Ninjia leader with his Samurai and Lord buddies
in the front lines. And for backup I've found a Priest/Bishop with a PSI and
Mage all equipped with Quarterstaffs {E weapon so they can attack physically
also} a marvelous second string. That way everyone fights and everyone casts
spells. Of course all of thoser chars were multipule professions in BoCF to
learn a lot of different skills or spells till finally reaching their final
profession around the time of entering the enchanted forest.
Sparks, somewhere I remember using the INFO from that black wafer to disarm

After reading the message earlier, I saved by level 8 guys and re- ported.
Bingo. The first time I got the Avenger and the Murasuma (SP?) blade. Less
armor and fewer spells, guess its a trade off and just depends on what you
want. The fewer spells do hurt, but I have always contended that a few good
fighters that can take out a bad guy per turn is worth a lot. Spells are up
there, but I've seen plenty of times when the party was saved by the stud
staying in there and just wacking away while all the whimps were sleeping or

Well I must say this game is better laid out than MM(Xeen). I really do like
the background music and sound FX. GREAT JOB Sir Tech.
The only thing I'm kind of griping at is that there was no re-roll options at
the beginning so if you didn't like your stats you could re-roll. That way I
can at least start with some decent characters like the ninja or Psionic.
It looks like one has to go through the entire sequence before you can delete
the character and start a new one.
Also I still don't know how to add a new character to the party if your old
ones die. The inn in the new city doesn't help. Anyone help me. I keep
getting tired of restoring the saved games.
Well started off with level 1 characters and BOY is it tough at level 1. I
wish someone would upload some studly characters here on GENIE. They don't
have to be godlike but just enough so a person can handle the wimpy creatures
and not have to worry about resting every 15 minutes.
Most of my characters are now level 4-5 but I still can't defeat the tons of
ratkin which are running around. Those suckers are fast!
Anyone know where to go in New City. Seems to me it's dangerous to rest
anywhere in there including the inn.
I can usually beat the wandering Savant patrols but not when there are more
than 6 or so.
Well off to hack and slash land. Now I just wish I had some nifty magical
weapons and armor.

Samurai Sun- I found sleeping in almost any room (that was cleared out) to be
ok, just make sure you save first as random encounters are known to happen.
You can also walk to the healing fountain to the east.
No reroll option. this is the same way Bane was set up. I dont think you can
add a character to your party, but you can resurrect a member(you lose one
point of vitality)

I am very happy with the many improvements you have made to the Bane

wit: why oh WHY do you STILL make us roll and roll and roll and ROLL in order

characters are so powerful, why not INCREASE the other classes abilities? I
WAS going to roll up a new party to see the differences but quit in
frustration. We're supposed to be having FUN creating characters. If you want
an example of what your system should immitate, look at the creation process
of Darklands. I spent a lot of time fooling around with that system just to
see what I could do, in the DELIGHTFUL knowledge that I could EXACTLY
reproduce the results if I found a carreer path that I liked.
Why, when you introduced several new regular skills (mapping,
swimming, dipplomacy and climbing) didn't you provide us SOME level of
competence? Why not have involved the player in the choice of what to bring
over and where to put the skill points from the old characters? (Perhaps you
could have led players through the level increase procedure for each of the
five levels so that WE could make the decisions.) Why is mapping a skill and
not part of the basic utilities? The Summoning and Ultima Underworld have
BEAUTIFUL maps that take care of the pain of making your own. I got so annoyed
at these things that I hacked my characters to give my gal a map skill of 100.
The result, while better, is still not worth a whole lot. We are gaming to
have FUN, NOT to go though some sort of TORTURE test!
Finnally, I am thankful for the skill and immagination that went into
this game, the many improvements you have made (like the trap stuff, that
looks NEAT!) and the wonderful artwork, music and animation. I am sure that I
will enjoy playing this game MUCH more than I enjoyed Bane, and Bane is the
only CRPG I have EVER played through more than once, but PLEASE consider these
changes for the next incarnation.
Dipplomacy, what's dipplomacy?

you said your swimming skills were at 100, and now your diplomacy
skills at 65 or so. It's taking forever to get my Bishop's

get like 2 points to spend on Physical Skills. Aigggh.
As for talking to NPCs, it looks like first, you've got to
make friends then find some word or phrase elsewheres that can
be used to dig an item or something out of them, as far as I

JEFF READ MY POSTS, the swimming skill can be advanced just like the weapon
skills - that is once you get past about 7-10 in the skill. Then it takes
HOURS of real time wading/swimming into one square and then directly back out,
resting forever to get all the lost stamina built back up and then repeating
the process FOREVER1 BTW I read the clue hear from someone about the needing
swiming so I pumped it up [with each lvl advance to the max over such useful
things like climbing or oratory.

Overkill I had the same problems and the index doesn't mention anything
about it; but, one of our clever members has mentioned that if you take the
USE option from the main game screen [not a char screen] click on the one
having the map and then highlight the map and click on use you get a look at
aboyt a 8x8 map in the area where you are currently {assuming you've wandered

After all you have support for the corvox family of cards and be honest, how

I've noticed that even when I successfully cast SILENCE on the
Gorn Rangers, that they still come back and cast spells such
as Blinding Flash and Itching. I -KNOW- I caught ALL of the
Rangers with Silence.
I just noticed for the first time, that when you drop an item
on a square, and then later step on that square again, the item
dropped apears in the lower right-hand corner of the screen,
and you can click on the item to put it into inventory. I
thought I read the manul thoroughly and didn't remember seeing
that feature mentioned anywhere.

Jeff T,
Blinding Flash and Itching Skin are Alchemist spells. I remember being
very frustrated in Bane when I first encountered monsters with Alchemist
spells: It is clearly documented, in both manuals, that "due to the nature of
their spells" the Alchemist does not suffer from low oratory or the silence
spell. (Perhaps it would make sense to borrow an idea from Darklands and
require Throwing skill).
Rangers and Ninjas use the same spells.

dang. I can't add new party member to my party if one dies or at least I
can't figure out how to.
I'm so used to playing the first Wiz game in which I would take a couple of
butch characters and help them to beef up novice characters. did this option
get left out on purpose?
I often lose fighters and rather than start off with a totally new party with
no veterans, I'd like to mix and match.
So far from what I've seen, once a character dies there is no choice but to
ressurect him/her or just delete him from the party.
Well so far mapped out the entire New City but can't seem to figure out how to
get to the Old City.
I saw a sign in the Condemened area but no entrance. Anyone been to the old
city yet?
Also, I don't understand the imp statue in the museum. What's the combo?
I'm also frustrated that it takes forever to beef up physical skills. I would
have thought that if you use a skill and each time you SUCCEED you should see
an increase in that skill. Makes sense. So far I don't think this is
happening. Even if a character was awarded a point for everytime he succeeded,
a person would inventually be proficient in that skill.
These skill categories reminds me so much of Runequest system by Avalon Hill.
Anyway, anyone been successful in negotiating with Mick the Pick or Lt.
Gruntwrapper in the city?

PS - Great game so far. BTW automapping doesn't work unless you have a map

Samurai, Once you get a musket of your own (supply depot in Upkyr), your skill
points do go up everytime you practice and get a hit on the firing range. I
think they go up a point each time you fire in combat and hit as well.
I evidently was lucky enough to port over from Bane with a map kit as it was

Phil, yes that option of mix'n'matching novice and veteran adventures was
dropped from Wiz VI. Now if an adventurer dies, you either 1) restore from
earlier save position, 2) resurrect the individual, or 3) play on with less
the max number of characters. BTW in Wiz VI the manual was wrong in that once
started nobody new could be added, I expect this mistake wasn't repeated in
VII's manual - but then I haven't read it very closely.

any of the three four possible directions, except for the dungeon a little
ways. Guess I'll just look for that map kit. Any clue which way it is? I'm
playing with the level one beginners. Agnari, the Amiga Bane
box had an insert that told about the mistake in the manual about not being
add to a team once started.
RE: character generation. I remember beeing frustrated by this when I
started Bane the first time. The second time I started it, tho, I realized it
was OK to try to obtain the exotic classes, but if I got one that was fairly
close, I kept it, knowing he or she would eventually be able to become what I
was wanting to obtain. This method worked extremely well in my second Bane
game. My characters are more advanced and even attaining some of the highest
level spells than my first party had after the forrest area. (My current
second game party is just entering the forrest). And yes, I am still playing
Bane off and on.
ANyway, I hope this assumption works in this game too.

Does everyone in the party need swim and climb skills?
I have one complain (unless I am unaware of something), I am using a
mouse in the game, but it is really tiresome to have to click with it for
each command in most parts of the game. I am glad the interface was overall
streamlined and simplified from Bane, but sure wish they had left in the
combination keyboard/mouse support (in more places, I mean). In combat this is
especially a hinderance. I got so used to hitting return in Bane when I
wanted to choose Fight. Is there a way to set up keyboard support and keep
the mouse. Most games nowdays have this choice.
? I have tendonitous in my right hand from using a mouse for five years,
and have switched to the left hand recently. I am not looking forward to
several thousands of battles, but I guess its unavoidable; I'm already hooked
on the game itself, which is great. The graphics and artwork are
wonderful also, and the sound. I was wondering if someone could tell me
what graphics mode it is in exactly? The overall picture qualtiy seems better
than most VGA or MCGA games I have seen, which are usually 200 x 320, or
something like that I think.

I think I found a bug, er uh, undocumented feature, that is if your
character has a weapon to throw in his secondary hand(shuriken, dart, etc.)
and he uses his last one in combat and then gets a second attack with his
secondary weapon, then he will throw his Primary weapon away! I've thrown a
sword, a sai, even nothing(it was my ninja and he was using his hands as his
primary weapon) and it did damage!
Here's a hint, for those of you wanting to increase your Artifact
skill, don't throw away(or sell) all those Sparkle Stix you come across, just
have your mage use them in combat when he doesn't have something better to do
and it'll usually increase his Artifact skill about +1. I went from 30 to 67
with about 50 stix.

I just found out something that may be a (non-fatal) bug. I use Roland for
music and when I rest, the resting stops automatically when the accompanying
music stops. The resting period seems more than eight hours as stated in the
documentation. To test this out, I turn off the music and do a rest.
Resting stops automatically much faster then when the music is playing.
Comparing the effects of resting also shows that with music on, resting
replenishes more spell points. Conclusion: Resting with music on takes more
then 8 hours. Of course you can always stop it manually...

thinking I had covered most of it. Before mapping I must have been going in
alot of circles. I have been wondering how crucial the time
passing is in this game, and if it is possible to lose the game from taking
too long to finish it. I think it would be a big dissapointment if after 500
hours of game play you find a message at the endgame that Kilroy had been
there and left with the treasure. I notice that time seems to pass every step
taken. (Because the moon moves.) I know I seem to have missed a major war in

useful in Paluke's. (nothing I needed anyway, there was some stuff). Paluke

Hey Todd aka SIR-TECH,
I just wanted to let you know that I wanted Crusaders so badly that when I

QUESTION.. will SIR-TECH be coming out with a 386 VGA version? I love the
game but I'd love to see what you guys could do with mega- machine only
rendition of the game.
A couple of hints/suggestions for your programmers for later games..
1.add a description line to the save game feature. I have
trouble sometimes remembering what those 8 letters mean and
I WROTE THEM!
2.add a hot key for pulling up the map if a party member has
the map kit. and allow scrolling!! after all if a character
has drawn a few maps he should be able to wip any one out
that he has (he drew them right?!).
3.for combat selections add a LOAD option for characters that
have muskets. I guess it was meant to be a puzzle for us
to figure out how to load it but it become tedious having
to do that each time and a LOAD option would take up the
round in a non-combat way like REST would.

I also love the game and have some suggestions for the future.
1) Try to include a wider variety of outdoor plants, trees, etc. It's kind of
boring after a while when I keep seeing the same trees over and over again.
It would be nice if the scenery changes.
2) Same as number 1 for the dungeons. I keep seeing the same wall design.
It's strange theat OrkOgre Castle has the same walls as a dungeon, and as Old
City. Was the same architect hired to do the whole planet?
3) I might be asking for too much but how about weather? It would be cool to
see snow falling or even rain...
4) I also vote for an easier way to bring up the map. The box mentions the
game has auto mapping but that's really not true. By the time you get a high
enough skill you have already started drawing the maps yourself. Ultima
Underworlds had a great mapping utitlity.
Other than that, the play is great!

Wrong Overkill, Ultima Underworlds has a great START at auto mapping. If you
can't get it to paper, IMHO, automapping to screen is a complete waste of
coding resources. When I'm running from X to Y, I need something in my hot
little hand to see the layout and all the turns, ect.

Apocolipse-- RE: rolling a Ninja; Unless your lucky, its a long wait. I've
done real well generating a Ninja in both Bane and this game by rolling up a
Bard or Ranger with near miss stats; it takes little time until he/she
graduates to Ninja capabilities. Hey all, regarding auto
mapping, I never did find the kit. Gave up and went on in the game. Where is
the thing? Some said it was near entrance to the game, but I looked high and
low and I didnt find it.
Great game, but it reminds me of others... Might and M II in the hack and
slash element, Dragon Wars with the graphics and story line elements. Dragon
Wars was one of my favorites, so Im not complaining.
Anyway, I digress. I sure would like to automap. If need be, please EMAIL
me the exact location of the kit. What good is an automap thats hidden and
hard to find? Ive been building up one of my character's mapping skills.
Argus P.S. Monster animations are also reminiscent to MMII, and
thats also meant as a compliment.

Argus-
I wouldnt worry too much about the "auto-mapping". You can't print it out
and it only shows an extremely small area around you. You also have to pump
up mapping skill before it starts showing much detail. If you transfer
characters you can be pretty far into the game before your maps event start
showing doors! My advice is to use your skill points for something else and
make your own maps.

Agent - thanks for the advise. It makes sense, and I will do so. As I do with
most great CRPGs, I have restarted my game to utilize knowledge of how to
optimize skills and such. (and explore New City more thoughrough the first
time through). But I think I will forget mapping skills.

File 5322, Cheat.LZH, in library 6 has been released and seems to work; but,
all usual caveats apply, DO IT ONLY ON A BACKUP savegame file.
You will need the LZA decompression program to extract the info and exe file
from this compressed file - if you don't have LHA it can be found in the PC RT
over on page 615, file/lib unknown.
Only thing I found negative about the editor was that it uses the + key to
increase stats and using the shift= I personally find a pain.

Argus: If you want the kit, go to the poppy fields. If/when all your guys f
all asleep, you will be transported into the woods south of the poppy fields.
Search South from where you wake up. In those woods their is a chest. In that
chest you will find an auto mapping kit.
I also agree about auto mapping. The feature in CotDS is fairly bogus. Making
maps is a drag. It's not hard just a drag. And the mapping shows such a small
area it is not overly helpful. I would suggest a bigger area for auto
mapping....and if I cast a Wizard Eye, the information I see ought to be
transferred to the auto map!

...I find automapping to be primarily of use in helping me find where I am on
my paper map. I am an RPGer from way back, and still had the habit of making
the maps, and went through the first dungeon and at least saw about half of
New City before going to find the mapping kit. It's kind of important to
wander around in the forest, else your characters will never be of a high
enough level to touch the Savant Guards (or at least, that's what I found.)
To find the automap kit, go southeast from the road just south of the Rattkin
ambush, and then follow the path as far south as you can go. When you hit
water, you're close to the chest containing it.
I'm still messing around in New City, going to each building and seeing what
lies within. The area I'm having the most problems with is the Museum of
Oddities; I can't figure how to get the wand or what to do with the twisted
faces...

Well it's comforting to know no big bugs have surfaced yet. I went ahead and
got it and am pretty impressed so far. I lost my BoCF characters in a HD
crash though and am having to with new chars in this one. Ironically, low
level adventuring here is just like it was in Wiz I killing birds, bugs, and
slimes.
To the person wondering how to get a Ninja off the bat...
I've had pretty good success using the Felpurr race, had to try a couple
times to get enough bonus points though.

I just gave up, and got a Bard and a Ranger instead.
I was messing about in New City and, according to my map, had seen everything
that was to be seen without opening some of the unopenable doors. I couldn't
kill the guardians of the person who keeps saying "Psst! Get me out of here!"
(I have a half-6th and half-5th level party) so I went to Old City, where I
*definitely* couldn't kill much of anything... sigh... frustration time.
Can someone send me email as to what the 'Twisted Faces' puzzle is all about?
Perhaps not an outright solution, but a CLUE?

Hi, all.
Just a point of info. regarding Cursed Items: You have to cast
the remove curse spell from a character's profile screen and not
from the main party screen. I ran around for many game days
trying to cast the spell from the party screen. Hope this saves
some time. Just click on the spells alter in the profile screen
to bring up the spells menu and cast.

For people who have been having trouble rolling Ninjas or Lords, there
was a chart in the Bane manual that (I believe) is still valid for Crusaders.
For a Ninja, the chart tells us that 15 Bonus Points are needed, and that you
have to start as a Male Dwarf, Male Dracon, or Male Felpurr to get a Ninja
with exactly 15 Bonus Points. For the Lord, only a Male Rawulf can qualify
with as few as 15 points.
When I roll characters, I keep rolling until I get 17 or more points no
matter what the character I'm trying to roll, so I didn't find the Ninja and
Lord for my new party any harder than rolling my Mage.
Also, the chart isn't the final word on rolling characters. While it
shows that the minimum for rolling a Samurai is 12 points for either a Male
Felpurr or a Male Faerie, the Faerie is NOT a good choice for a Samurai
because of the low carrying capacity.

entrance to Old City but was getting my buttski kicked, so left there in a
hurry. Instead, I finally played and played 'till I beat the constabulatory
guards and am now off in OrkOgre castle getting killed... sigh... and a whole
bunch of people I don't even know about are getting maps and unravelling their
secrets and doing all sorts of stuff.
Am I doing wrong by resting my party and fixing it after each combat? Is it
making the game take too long? I just got into the habit in SSI games...

TY, sure- its in appendix C. There is an index also you may not have noticed.
(Thanks, Sir Tech! I have always wished game manuals would have indices. They
hardly ever do.) I have a comment and question about
this game. I have sound it quite hard with my new characters, after the first
easier parts of the game (First two forrests, New City, dungeon). I am just
surviving in Mukrama (sp?) but there are some spots I must avoid there. I am
wondering if I need to restart again and have the patience to roll all super
characters? Is it possible to get past this apparent game imbalance with only
moderate characters? Mine are all around level 6; fighter is at 7. Hacking in
the forrest is really tedious when the only purpose is to try to gain a level
or two. My bishop never seems to get more than 1 physical skill point per
level, and so still cant swim. My first try at this game, all were swimming
before this point where I am now. Anyway, I think perhaps game balance was
not as well implemented in this game as it was in BAne, at least in the early
part and with new characters. (I assume its not as bad with imports). Other
elements make it even more fun than Bane, but not in this one aspect, at
least for me. Where I am now in the game, most encounters are either easy
or impossible. Easy is boring, and impossible is frustrating. I don't think
my characters are anywhere near tough enough to survive the tough monsters,
and can think of no way to accelorate level increases. There were a couple of
places in Bane at about this same point (around levels 5-7) that one could
find unlimited reapeat battels (the bats, and the forrest grate in the
castle.) Is there such a place in Crusaders? If so please tell. Leave in
spoilers section if necessary. I will find it. Thanks, Argus
(correction above around the third line sound should be found.)

Agnari, I have restarted again with better characters. Now they are Lord,
Valkeri, Ranger, Priest, Psionic, and Mage. The Priest will become a Lord very
soon (I hope), and the Valkeri is almost a Ninja. In your opinion would it be
better to make the Ranger into another ninja or into a Samurai? Lord, Lord,
Ninja, Ninja, Psionic, Mage seems a little imbalanced to me (not enough mage
spells). I would appreciate any advise from anyone.

Argus my PERSONAL perference is towards Ninja's HOWEVER there is very little
in the way of armor that they can wear [once you complete Munkharama you can
pick up most of one set]. So having more then one may be a penality. I try
not to rely upon spells too much, a few with the silence spell [by few I mean
3 or 4 chars] sure come in handy fighting those powerful types. Otherwise it's
cold hard swords/feet that do most of the damage.

Argus, the characters you picked are good and if you want them better, change
Professions when they are at level 8 or 9.The Ranger change to a Ninja. The
Mage or Priest change to a Bishop or both of them to a Bishop. You will go
back to level 1, but you will pick up more spells and skill points. Your
changed characters hit points will go up also. Don't change all of your
characters at the same time, because you need some of them to do the fighting.

Argus, I transferred characters in so I came in with level 1 Lord, Ninja and
Samurai. It has been a tradition with Wiz, wait for the roll. Read the manual
carefully, it will give you clues as to what species to use for the differnt
characters, that way you will need a lower bonus to hit level 1. So I guess I
am saying that all you need it the upper elite professions. All of my guys
cast spells. Three of them are super fighters. I also like Bishops, yes they
gain slowely, but the have both defensive and offensive spells.
Those are my two cents.

was a way to exit and restore a game during combat without waiting for all
characters to finish their round. When I'm fighting 30 opponents and 2 of my

Also wish there was a way to abort all the text and long stories in the

The last couple of days I've called the tech support line and haven't made it
through the busy signals. What this is all about is that about a week and a
half ago, I phoned in and was transferred to a lady(whom I was under the
impression that she was head of the department). The question I brought up was
that I was unable to get both sound and music played through my Ultrasound
soundboard. She said that she was wanting to get the soundboard from Gravis so
she could have testing availabilities as well. I gave her a name of the
marketing director and she said she'd call and try to get a Ultrasound board.
She also said she'd probably be able to help me within a week. Seeing as how I
can never get through to tech support, can you forward this message to the
woman (I wish I remembered her name) in tech support. Please get back with me
when you get an opportunity. Thank you.

Overkill- Sounds like you may need to decrease your delay setting in the
configure menu. I've got mine around 6, I think. I imagine many play with even
lower delay settings. I assume you know about the end game option at the
end of a round. It never takes more than about 15 seconds for me to go
through selecting battle commands. (Excuse me, I should have said previously
"at the end of selecting battle commands" not rounds of battle itself. I admit
I am playing on a 40 MHZ machine, so battles don't go on for that long. I also
admit I am not very far along, so you probably are into much longer battles
than I am now.) The default delay setting of 25 more or less (don't remember
what it was exactly) is rediculously long. Good luck.

I know about the end game option at the end of the round. My problem is
that once I select all the options for each player, the round starts and
sometimes it happens that some of my characters get killed right away. I now
would like to restart a saved game. Instead I have to wait for all 30 ghosts

about that problem. Oh well; not looking forward to that. I hope he fixes this
in the next installment. I suggest, if DWB is really stuck on long battles (it
is almost necessarry if the same level of detailed data is to be reported
during the battles; and I don't mind that): then let the escape key bring up
a special menu whith just a few options, such as Continue, Leave Game, Load
