  112.         applications, only to find that you get lost searching for that one
  113.         application you need?  Or have you ever found yourself wanting to
  114.         quickly start an application from within the application you are
  115.         using?  Well, New Generation Software Ltd. has the solution for you!
  116.         WinEZ provides one of the easiest ways to switch between and start
  117.         applications under Windows.

  119.         Once WinEZ is installed and running, it places two new icons on the
  120.         title bar of the active application.  The left icon or "Fast Path
  121.         Icon" allows you to quickly start any application in the Windows'
  122.         Program Manager, or be configured to jump directly to the Program
  123.         Manager (or any add-in Windows' shell you define).  The right icon
  124.         or "Task Switch Icon" provides you with a list of all active
  125.         applications.  Similar to the Windows' Task List, WinEZ goes one
  126.         step better and provides task switching without having to use the
  127.         CTRL-ESC or click on the background.

  129.         WinEZ also provides an enhanced Run facility that offers you an
  130.         easy way to navigate through directories and start applications.

  168.         We at New Generation Software are continually improving WinEZ to
  169.         meet the needs of our users.  Version 3 incorporates many of the
  170.         suggestions we have received.  Below is a list of new features we

  174.         1. Norton Support!  The "Power Menu" will now support both Program
  175.            Manger groups (.GRP files) and Norton Desktop groups (.QAG
  176.            files).

  178.         2. The Fast Path icon (left) can now be configured to:

  180.            (a) Display a pull down "Power Menu" consisting of your Program
  181.                Manager (or Norton Desktop) groups.  Each group then further
  182.                expands into the applications under it.

  186.            (c) Directly jump to ANY add-in Windows Shell.

  188.         3. End ANY active Windows applications from the "Task List Icon".

  223.         WinEZ attaches 2 icons to the title bar, a Task Switch icon and
  224.         Fast Path icon.  These icons provide a user with one of the fastest
  225.         ways to switch between and start applications under Windows.

  228.         The "Task Switch Icon" (right icon):
  229.  
  230.            - Quickly switch to ANY active application
  231.  
  232.              There is no need to hunt down that one particular window or
  233.              CTRL-ESC to the Task Manager.  From the current application,
  234.              WinEZ's provides a pull down menu of all active applications.
  235.  
  236.            - Start a new application from WinEZ's Run dialog.
  237.  
  238.              WinEZ's enhanced Run facility allows a user to start new
  239.              applications (DOS or Windows) without having to start the
  240.              Windows' File Manager.  This dialog allows a user to select a
  241.              file (program or batch file) to be executed in a manner
  242.              similar to an open file dialog.  Filters are available to
  243.              display only certain types of file extensions (EXE, COM, BAT,
  244.              PIF) for easy pickings.  You may even enter the name of the
  245.              program directly.

  247.              Best of all, WinEZ's Run facility remembers the last 5
  248.              programs executed.  Select the drop down the list box
  249.              (ComboBox) and choose a program from the list presented.

  251.         The "Fast Path Icon" (left icon):
  252.  
  253.         - Allows a user to start another application without ever leaving
  254.           the current application they are using.  It may be configured 2
  255.           ways:
  256.  
  257.           1. WinEZ's "Power Menu"
  258.  
  259.              With WinEZ's Power Menu, you can start any application that
  260.              you've defined in the groups of the Program Manager (or
  261.              Norton's Desktop for Windows).  The Power Menu is a drop down
  262.              menu which displays a list of all the group items of the
  263.              Program Manager.  Each group item has a submenu that contains
  264.              all of the applications in that group.  So instead of leaving
  265.              your current application to activate the Program Manager, just
  266.              bring up the Power Menu and "viola!", your group applications
  267.              are just a click away.

  278.           2. Switch directly to the Program Manager or any add-in
  279.              Windows shell.

  281.              WinEZ's Fast Path Icon may also be configured to allow a user
  282.              to jump directly to any active application.  By default, WinEZ
  283.              will jump directly to the Program Manager, however it may be
  284.              configured to activate any add-in Windows shell.  (See
  285.              "Setting WinEZ's Options").

  287.           3. By pressing the right mouse button over this icon, you can
  288.              jump directly to the Program Manager (or any add-in shell
  289.              specified in the Options menu) when in Power Menu mode.

  335.         INSTALLING AND GETTING STARTED

  338.         WinEZ is easy to install.  First, you will need to unzip the
  339.         WINEZ.ZIP file into a subdirectory (i.e.  C:\WINDOWS).  You will
  340.         need an unzipping utility, like PKUNZIP, to do this.
  341.  
  342.         Once unzipped, you have two choices to get WinEZ up and running.
  343.  
  344.         1. To allow WinEZ to run automatically every time you start
  345.            Windows, you will need to modify the WIN.INI file found in the
  346.            Windows subdirectory.  By editing the line containing the LOAD
  347.            keyword, append the program name WINEZ.EXE.
  348.  
  349.            For example:  LOAD=C:\WINDOWS\WINEZ.EXE
  350.  
  351.            The next time you start Windows, WinEZ will be started for you
  352.            automatically.
  353.  
  354.         2. If you wish to start WinEZ manually, it would be best to install
  355.            WinEZ into a group menu of the Program Manager.  Choose 'New'
  356.            off the 'File' Menu of the Program Manager (Refer to the
  357.            Windows' documentation on how to install programs within a
  358.            Group of the Program Manager).

  395.         WinEZ is a shareware product and is available to you, free, for an
  396.         evaluation period of thirty days.  If you like what you see and
  397.         feel that it will be useful, you are encouraged to register with
  398.         us.  The base registration fee is $29.95.

  400.         NOTE:  It is a FREE upgrade to version 3.1 for registered users of
  401.                previous versions if the user obtains version 3.1 from a BBS.
  402.                The registration number from the previous versions will work
  403.                with version 3.1.  There is $12.95 upgrade charge if you would
  404.                like New Generation Software to send you an upgrade diskette.

  409.           "About box" that appears every time you start WinEZ.

  451.         USING WINEZ
  452.         -----------
  453.  
  454.         WHAT YOU SEE...
  455.  
  456.         Once WinEZ is up and running, you will notice two new icons that
  457.         have attached themselves next to the system menu icon on the title
  458.         bar of the active window.  With WinEZ running, most windows that
  459.         become the active application will contain these icons.
  460.  
  461.         The Fast Path Icon (left icon) may be configured to bring up the
  462.         Power Menu, or switch directly to the Program Manager (or any
  463.         add-in shell).  The Power Menu presents the user with a pull down
  464.         menu of all Program Manager groups.  Each group then further
  465.         expands into a submenu of the applications under it.  By default,
  466.         the Fast Path Icon displays the Power Menu.

  468.         The right icon represents the Task Switch Icon which presents the
  469.         user with a menu of all the active applications currently running.
  470.         This provides a user with a quick and easy way to jump directly to
  471.         another active application without having to hunt for it.

  474.         USING THE FAST PATH ICON
  475.         ------------------------
  476.  
  477.         As mentioned earlier, the Fast Path Icon is configured for the
  478.         Power Menu by default.  This icon can be used to quickly start
  479.         applications since it provides a list of all Program Manager groups
  480.         and their applications.  To select an item, press and hold the
  481.         mouse button 1 over the icon until the menu appears.  Drag the
  482.         pointer over the group item in the menu, a submenu will appear,
  483.         displaying the applications within that group.  Drag the mouse
  484.         pointer over the application item then release it.  The application
  485.         will be executed.  If the Fast Path Icon is configured to jump to
  486.         an active application (i.e.  Program Manager), then just click on
  487.         it with the mouse and immediately the application defined will be
  488.         activated (i.e.  the Program Manager in this case).  To change the
  489.         Fast Path application, select the Options...  item from within the
  490.         Active Applications Icon.  Next, specify the name of any
  491.         application that is active.  This icon should be used only for
  492.         applications that are running.  If the application is not running,
  493.         clicking on this icon will sound a beep.  See "Setting WinEZ's
  494.         Options" for more details on configuring the Fast Path Icon.

  508.         USING THE TASK SWITCH ICON
  509.         --------------------------

  511.         As stated previously, the Task Switch icon allows a user to quickly
  512.         switch between applications.  To switch to another active
  513.         application, position the mouse pointer over the Task Switch Icon.
  514.         Click and hold mouse button 1. A pull down menu of the active
  515.         applications will be displayed.  Drag the mouse pointer over the
  516.         application that you would like to activate, and release the
  517.         button.  The application selected will now be active.
  518.  
  519.         The Task Switch Icon also presents the user with the other features
  520.         of WinEZ.  Along with the active applications, other items in the
  521.         menu are:
  522.  
  523.              End Task   This item further expands into a submenu of active
  524.                         tasks.  It provides the user with a fast and easy
  525.                         way to end other active applications.  Select an
  526.                         item from the list and WinEZ will end the program.
  527.  
  528.              Run...      This item is the enhanced Run facility that brings
  529.                          up a dialog box allowing you to enter an
  530.                          application to execute or select an application
  531.                          from a list box.
  532.  
  533.              Options...  This item displays a dialog box that allows you to
  534.                          configure WinEZ.  This includes the action
  535.                          performed by the Fast Path Icon and the behavior
  536.                          of the windows when switching between applications
  537.                          (See "Setting WinEZ's Options" section for more
  538.                          details).
  539.  
  540.              About...    This item brings up WinEZ's About Box dialog.
  541.  
  542.              Exit        This item will end WinEZ and remove it from
  543.                          memory.

  545.                          Note:  This Exit selection item will be
  546.                          unavailable (grayed out) on non standard windows
  547.                          (i.e.  dialog boxes).

  568.         When selected from the Task Switch Icon menu ("Run..."), a dialog
  569.         box will appear that will allow a user to start applications not
  570.         defined by a Program Manager Group.
  571.  
  572.         Included in this dialog is a listbox that contains files found in
  573.         the current directory.  This dialog is similar to an Open File
  574.         dialog found in many Windows applications.  A user may change
  575.         directories or drives by selecting the appropriate items in the
  576.         directories listbox.
  577.  
  578.         A filter is available to allow certain file types to be included in
  579.         the listbox.  Current filters include:  EXE, COM, PIF, BAT, and ALL
  580.         files.  These can be used to quickly locate the file that needs to
  581.         be executed.  An additional feature of the Run dialog is its
  582.         ability to keep the last 5 commands executed.

  622.         SETTING WINEZ'S OPTIONS

  625.         WinEZ may be configured by selecting the Options...  item from the
  626.         menu under the Task Switch Icon.  This is where the switching
  627.         behavior can be set and the Fast Path Icon actions can be
  628.         configured.
  629.  
  630.         Switching Behavior:
  631.  
  632.              When using WinEZ to switch between applications, WinEZ will
  633.              attempt to return the application back to the state it was
  634.              found (if all switching was done via WinEZ).  WinEZ may also
  635.              be configured to always minimize applications when switching
  636.              to other applications.  Choose the switching behavior by
  637.              selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  638.              preferred option.

  642.                WinEZ will attempt to return the application back to the
  643.                state it was found (if all switching was done via WinEZ)
  644.  
  645.              - Always Minimize on Switch
  646.  
  647.                WinEZ will always minimize the application before switching
  648.                to another.

  650.                Note:  WinEZ will only minimize windows that support being
  651.                       minimized.

  679.         Fast Path Icon Action:
  680.  
  681.              The Fast Path Icon can be configured to perform one of two
  682.              functions.  The icon may be configured for WinEZ's Power Menu,
  683.              or to switch a user directly to the Program Manager (or any
  684.              specified active application).  These two options are
  685.              available for your selection.  Choose the Fast Path function
  686.              by selecting the appropriate radio button corresponding to the
  687.              preferred option.
  688.  
  689.              - Power Menu
  690.  
  691.                If this option is chosen, then the Power Menu will be
  692.                displayed when you click on the Fast Path Icon (See "Using
  693.                the Fast Path Icon" on how to use the Power Menu).
  694.  
  695.                Selecting "Always Rebuild on Startup" will cause WinEZ
  696.                to rebuild the Power Menu when it is inovke.  If this option
  697.                is not set, a user may have to select "Rebuild Power Menu"
  698.                to get the most current groups listed in the Power Menu
  699.                pull down.
  700.  
  701.              - Title of Window
  702.  
  703.                If this option is chosen, then the application specified in
  704.                the entry field will be activated when the Fast Path Icon is
  705.                pressed.  To specify the application you wish to switch to,
  706.                enter the text found in the title bar of that application.
  707.  
  708.                This is ALSO the name of the Window that the RIGHT mouse
  709.                button will invoke when in Power Menu mode.
  710.  
  711.         WinEZ Icon Position
  712.  
  713.              The WinEZ icons may be positioned anywhere on the title bar.
  714.  
  715.              o Left - will left justify the WinEZ icons.
  716.              o Right - will right justify the WinEZ icons.
  717.              o Number of pels from left - will place the WinEZ icons the
  718.                specified amount of pels from the left side of the title bar.
  719.                NOTE:  Use this option to adjust WinEZ's icons if there is
  720.                       an icon conflict, or if WinEZ looks out of place
  721.                       (i.e. sometimes in Super VGA mode, WinEZ is off by a
  722.                        pel).

  737.         USING WINEZ WITH NORTON DESKTOP
  738.         -------------------------------
  739.  
  740.         WinEZ will automatically detect if you have the Norton Desktop
  741.         loaded as your shell when using Windows.  WinEZ will search the
  742.         "Shell=" line in the SYSTEM.INI file for the character string
  743.         "NDW.EXE"
  744.  
  745.              Shell=C:\NORTON\NDW.EXE
  746.  
  747.         All Norton Groups and Sub-groups will be listed on the WinEZ Power
  748.         Menu.  Sub-groups are not nested.
  749.  
  750.         NOTE:  All group and subgroup file names MUST end in the .QAG
  751.                extension.  This is done automatically by Norton if
  752.                when creating a group no extension (.XXX) is specified.
  753.  
  754.         If you have a Group named "Norton Desktop" (which Norton will
  755.         create on installation) we recommend you rename it to something
  756.         else (i.e.  "Norton Utilities").  This will prevent WinEZ from
  757.         getting confused with the application "Norton Desktop" and the
  758.         group file "Norton Desktop".
  759.  
  760.         Since Passwords are not part of the DOS operating system, WinEZ
  761.         will by-pass all Norton Desktop passwords set when excuting
  762.         an application.  Also, Norton groups (just groups, not
  763.         applications) created with a password will not be part of the
  764.         WinEZ Power Menu.
  765.         Note:  Norton also by-passes his own passwords if you execute a
  766.         program from the file manager utility.  True security really has
  767.         to be done at an operating system level.
  768.  
  769.         When selecting "Rebuild Power Menu," WinEZ will automatically
